    3. The families of John SAMPLE and Jerry METCALF are cordially invited to attend the annual family reunion at the Sample Cemetery, Saturday July 1, 2000. This would included some of the following surnames: Sample, Metcalf, Rush, Week, Golden, Branch, Strickland, Lout, English, Cruse, Permenter, Tyler, Vaughn, Chandler,and Oswalt. The cemetery is located about 4 miles east of Shelbyville off FM 2694. We will began about 9:30 am with visiting and sharing family history. Please bring your lawn chairs and a covered lunch. We also have established a perpetual fund to help with the upkeep of the cemetery. Donation may be mailed to: Vickie Martin Rt. 5, Box 199-A, Center, Texas 75935. John SAMPLE and his family came to Texas in 1838 settling in the eastern part of Shelby County. Jerry Metcalf and his family came to Shelby County in the mid 1850's. Many of the descendants of these early pioneer families still reside in the county. John Sample died in 1847 and is the first person buried in the cemetery, making the Sample Cemetery one of the oldest in the county.
