On the 1900 census for Shelby County there appeared James Kendrick Ford, his wife Lydia (Liddie) Helm Ford, and children Minnie P.(age 20), James S. (age 17), John C.(age 15), Amos J.(age 13), Ollie (age 12), Daniel (age 7), and Joseph (age 5). On the 1910 census this family appears in Bosque County, northwest of Waco. Then later, James and Lydia are buried near relatives in Navarro County, near Corsicana. However, Minnie, James, and John are not with the family in 1910. Did they stay in Shelby County. Does anyone know what became of these? By the way, James Kendrick Ford was the uncle of Amos Joshua Ford who settled around 1900 in Panola County with wife Mary Alice Hammons Ford and their children. I will appreciate any information on the names Ford, Burgess, Graves, Hayes, Ritter, McKay, and Millsap. Thanks, Gerald Ford, Beasley, Texas (near Houston)
I would like to take time to thank and commend all of the folks on the Shelby county rootsweb for their kindness and helpfulness. They are a super great bunch of folks. THANKS A TON AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL...MT

I finally got the Asbury Cemetary transcribed and online and even put a couple of pictures on the page. For you SAMFORD researchers, there are quite a few in this cemetary and I included a picture of the tombstone of Elkanah & Mollie Samford. Now that I finally learned to use this scanner, I'm going to add a few pictures to some of the other cemetary pages. Members from the Shelby County Historical Society will be going to the Forbis Cemetery in Short Community. There are several graves dating back into the early 1800s and several marked as confederate soldiers' graves. We will be taking photos and recording the markers. If anyone know anymore info. please leave it at the Shelby Co. Museum. ================= A project that will soon be undertaken by the Society and other interested parties is a Historical Marker Program. This markers will identify historically significant people, buildings, places or events. Along with the marker will be a coordinating numbering system. This will allow people to tour and drive by the sites. Plans are also to develop a cassette tape that goes along with the stops. Sign design and everything is in the early stages of development. If anyone has any advise or ideas, please contact John Warner at the Museum, 409-598-3613. It is important that the signs be simple and easily read from the roadside. Also they need to be blend into their surroundings. Early estimates have the signs costing approx.. $30. An example would be to mark a site like the German Prison Camp or the home site of someone important.

I am asking for help locating the descendants of George W. Toms,b. 1852 in Columbia county Arkansas. married Nancy Grosby in East Texas, probably Sabine county, about 1874. The family was on the Sabine county census in 1880 with one child, a son , William E.Toms b. 1876. George is mentioned as a witness on a land transaction in 1887 in Sabine county, but this is the last record of the family that I can find.I could not find a marriage record for George in Sabine county but was told that there was a fire in 1875 that may have destroyed it if it was in Sabine county. I will appreciate any info on this family and the family of Nancy Grosby that can be found.
I am seeking information on the family of DeWitt C. Toms.He was born in Columbia county Arkansas in 1862. Son of Edward H. Toms and Polly Twitty.Died in Bronson Texas,Sabine county in 1925. Jessie Toms b.1899,no more info; Flossie Toms b.1902;married O.J.McAlister in Sabine county in 1920; & Alma Toms b. 1903.Any information on any of this family will be greatly appreciated. I should add that DeWitt is buried at Bronson cemetery in Bronson Texas. I would really like to find out the families of the four daughters and who Jessie and Alma married. I have tried to find their license in Sabine and Shelby counties but to no avail. Thanks again for any help.

The Shelby County Historical Society and Museum will be hosting an OPEN HOUSE December 17th from 5-7 and again on December 19th from 11-1. Danny Paul and Sally Windham will be singing Christmas carols on Thursday and on both days Santa will be present to take photographs with children of ALL ages. There will be refreshments and tour guides available to explain where the Society and Museum are heading in 1999. The Museum is not to far from having items on exhibit, but more than likely things will not be up by the OPEN HOUSE. But we want to say THANKS for making 1998 a great year of us and look how far we have come in one year. Hope to see you there. Also tickets are still on sale for the quilt, afghan, and nameplate. The drawing will be December 17th during the open house.
