I am very fortunate to have such a great number of people offering to do lookups for Shelby County. Believe me, I cannot do this by myself since I sponsor two other counties. Anyway, just a reminder when asking for anyone to do a lookup, PLEASE include the county and state. (This is not just for Shelby County). Some of the volunteers help with several counties also. Thanks, Jane Sanford Keppler sponsor for Shelby County TX DeSoto Parish LA Montgomery County TX.

I am seeking contact with descendants of the ROSS family, and am interested in learning more about the many descendants of the ROSS family. My husband, James Cannon, is a descendant of: WILLIAM HENRY ROSS, b. abt 1815 TN, who mar. MARY ELIZABETH WILSON, through their daughter: AMANDA ROSS, b. Sept 20, 1849, d. Jun 27, 1875, who mar. WILLIAM M. GOLDEN, b. 1845, d. Jan 11, 1902. Is there a descendant who might have copy of any military papers concerning William H. Ross, of which I might be able to obtain a copy? Is there a GEDCOM file available that I might obtain? ROSS, WILLIAM HENRY William Henry Ross, born ca 1815 in Tennessee son of John Henry Ross and his wife, Mary. William H. died during the War Between the States about 1862 while serving the Confederacy. William H. Ross married January 25, 1838, in Yalobusha Co., MS, Elizabeth Wilson, daughter of John Wilson and Mary Hopgood of Feleciana Parish, LA, who was born 1821 in LA and died in Shelby Co., TX, after 1870. Elizabeth Wilson Ross' second husband was a man by the name of Donahue. Mary (Hopgood) Wilson married James Alfred Truitt in December 20, 1849, in Shelby Co., TX, as his second wife. No children were born to this union. William Ross and wife, Elizabeth came to Texas about 1844 with her widowed mother, brothers and sisters. Elizabeth's father had drowned in the Yalobusha River about 1843. This appears on page 752 of the Shelby County History, and was submitted by Frances Lee Truitt Wesley. UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE The Society will be meeting April 22 at the Museum in Center, TX starting at 6:00 p.m. Our speaker will reminisce through her "Memoirs of W.W.II". A close look through the eyes of a solider and his wife. Refreshments will be served. BUILDING AND GROUNDS UPDATE Repairs are coming along to the interior of the Museum The Historical Trackers, a Center Elementary group of students, donated $600 toward the purchase of a flat file at the Museum. A grant from Texas Historical Commission helped pay the remainder of the $890 bill. The flat files will allow the Society to archive large items such as photos, maps, and documents. Shelby Savings Bank today donated $500 for continued renovations to the interior of the Museum. Our fund raising is at 36% of the $25,000 goal for 1999. One more exhibit room is almost complete. Floors are being sanded by volunteers this week. Walls, ceiling and trim are complete. Several large private collections were recently donated to the Museum. We need volunteers to help go through these collections and start accessioning them into the Society's collection. Donation may be sent to SCHS Treasurer PO Box 1542 Center, TX 75935 UPDATE on WEB PAGE We have now moved into the 21st Century! www.panola.cc.tx.us/~schs email address is [email protected] The Society will do research for $5 per hour on genealogy plus associated costs... coping and mailing. All money raised goes for up keep of the Library, Museum and collections SHELBY COUNTY HISTORY BOOK No more BOOKS are left since early in 1998. We have discussed reordering them through another publisher. The Shelby County Historical COMMISSION was the organization that originally put the book together under the guidance of John Reagan Harris. Mr. Harris died earlier this year. The last word we had on the book was that it would cost ~$100 each with a minimum order of 100. The Society is contemplating taking orders with payment attached. If we can get 100 orders in six months we will do it, if not the money would be returned. ALL OF THIS IS STILL UNDER CONSIDERATION. Also there has been talk on a Vol II. Shelby County History Book Anyone wanting to donate some time in researching and compiling information? SUMMER WORKERS! Through DETGO and JTPA the Society will be utilizing summer students (2) to help in the daily up keep of the Museum. These are high school students from area High Schools. My g-g-grandfather, Martin Fletcher DAVIS was born in about 1849-1852 in probably Shelby or Panola county, Texas. He was the son of Nathan DAVIS (1810 - 1883) and Susan FLETCHER (1820 - after 1860). He was in Panola county in 1880 with a wife and 3 children. This is the last place I can pin him down. He bought the land in Henderson county, in March of 1885, where his widow and children ended up. His widow remarried in November of 1886, so he must have died between March 1885 and November 1886, but I can't determine whether he died in Panola (or Shelby) county before they came to Henderson county. Does anyone have cemetery indexes that list this person? I will be coming to the area at the end of this month to look up court records and would like to photograph the cemetery and tombstone if I can locate where he is buried. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Peggy Haynes Loar [email protected]
