I am just now getting back online after a hard-drive failure more than a week ago. I apologize if I haven't answered any mail received. I had just downloaded mail and had about 20 pieces of mail when the hard-drive failed. If I owe you an answer, please e-mail me again. Peggy Loar <[email protected]> dhc.net>=20
This sounds like a good service project. Are there any local Boy Scouts looking for an Eagle Project? Cleaning and cataloging a cemetery would accomplish three objectives: the cleanup, the project, and preserving a record of the cemetery which could be given to the museum. While I feel that I am fit enough to toil in the hot sun and humidity for hour, there are others that it would literally kill. Might I suggest that we form a committee of those interested online and then approach the SCHS with the idea. Also the SCV does clean up in cemeteries that contain CSA Veterans. We could get with them also. They have a camp in Shelby Co. If we plan this correctly we should be cleaning cemetries this fall when the temperature is in the 80's. Fulton E. Rivers, Trooper Co. [email protected] Shelby County Co-ordinator >> It really concerns me that this cemetery seems to have been forgotten. I noticed that the last burial was in 1989. How long do you figure it has been since it was cleaned? Does anyone on the list know any of the descendants of these people? Perhaps it is time that we get together and form a Shelby County clean up crew. I for one would volunteer some time and tools, even though we are in the Houston area. It only takes a few people. I am sure that with a little coordination with the SCHS we could make a difference. I found my Kentucky ancestors graveyard some 10 years ago, and it was grown up....about 20 years worth of growth. I paid a local to spray the cemetery with a herbicide and I returned the following fall to clean it out. Needless to say it was still a big job to clean it up, but after 2 day we had it all clean and even reset the tombstones. I plan on returning there this summer to do a little more research. I will see how 10 years of neglect have affected it. Maybe I should bring the tools with me....LOL Anyway, you all that are around Shelby County, give it a thought. Perhaps someone will take care of your gravesite when you are gone. Gene Rivers McMahon/Shofner/Woodfin/Dyer/

Dear Lee, I talked to my brother in law about Miles Courtney. He has done a lot of research in Shelby Co. He doesn't have any more info on him than I do. Are you a descendent of this line? I'm sending this to the Shelby List and the East Texas List to see if there is any help there. I'm looking forward to hearing from you. Kay ******************************************* Subject: a family history question Date: Fri, 28 May 1999 07:30:58 -0600 From: lee courtney <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Ms. McCary--I am seeking information about Miles Courtney, an Irish immigrant who lived near Tenaha at the turn of the century. In 1898, he married Eliza Murphy, the daughter of Reverend James S. Murphy and Mary Jane McCary Murphy. Miles Courtney died in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Enos Campbell at Good Hope in December of 1920. Do you know of anyone who might be able to help me? I note that Nelda Turner Walker has written of the McCary and Murphy families in History of Shelby County. Do you know how I might get in touch with her? The Shelby County websites are tremendously impressive. I wish every Texas county had such representation. Thank you very much.
