    1. Mortality Schedules
    2. Polly Rash
    3. -- MORTALITY SCHEDULES This was posted on Ancestry.....someone was asking about it recently: Included in the 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses were questions regarding those who died in the twelve months prior to the enumeration. They list persons who died 1 June - 31 May of the year prior to the census. Even though these lists of deaths are widely believed to under-report actual numbers of deceased, this is still a valuable source of information. In many states where vital records were not kept it provides a nation-wide death register for five years between 1849 and 1880. The schedule lists the deceased name, sex, age, color, widowed or not, place of birth, month of death, occupation, and cause of death. In 1870 the parents' birthplace was added.

    3. Although I am going away from my computer for several days, I would like to leave a message for all of the good, hard working folks such as Leonard Irish who just posted his work on the Lone Oak Cemetary and for Ray Jackson for his incredible work and EVERYBODY ELSE who has done work on the cemeteries of Shelby County, Texas. The message is that I would like to give some input on the Cassel Cemetary (BEFORE IT IS POSTED ON-LINE) to the person who is going to put it on line. If no one has volunteered to do it, I will do it. The Cassel Cemetary is small as far as the numbers of tombstones go, but as with any of the cemeteries, there is some history behind it. My great-great grandmother, Delilah Ann Carroll Booth Paul (08 July 1838-07 November 1892) is buried there and I have been going there since the early 1960's. Thanks very much and excuse my not being able to respond for over a week. Tony Lanagan

    2. My ancestors (BUCKLEY) were early settlers of Shelby Co. and my direct line moved on before 1900. I've never even been in the county. Nevertheless, all those cemeteries listed on line are extremely helpful for researchers like me. You are preserving my family history too. I want to personally say thanks to those people who are listing and posting the data. You are a great help to us "online genealogist." From all of us that can't get to Shelby Co. a big thank you, Grant W. JOHNSTON Chico, CA

    3. Grant, Unfortunately you missed one of the great historians of all time, Dr. George Truett Buckley (1898-c.1982) Cousin Truett was a Carroll/Booth/Paul descendant and the oldest of 20 or so first cousins of my mother; his mother, in turn, was the oldest of my grandmother's sisters and brothers and her mother was the oldest of the previous generation. I only know that his father was the Reverend Tyre Buckley and was of the Buckley families in the southern part of Shelby County. Truett lived mostly in Columbus, MS where he headed the English department of Mississippi State College for Women. This just shows you what can turn up with a little 'press' like we have here on this great Shelby Rootsweb. regards, Tony Lanagan -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Saturday, June 26, 1999 3:52 PM Subject: Re: Fw: Abijah Davis >In a message dated 6/25/99 3:09:47 PM Pacific Daylight Time, >[email protected] writes: > ><< > Sorry sir, > but I don't now of any connections of this group to Benton County, AL or Red > River County, TX. She married John Henry McLeroy 11/1883 in Panola Co. He was b. 1/1855 in GA and d. 3/15/1931 in Timpson. Both are buried in the Timpson-Woodlawn Cem. They were parents of Maud (b. 1885), Annie (b. 1886), Charles (b. 1889), John B. (b. 1893), Carrie (b. 1894), Loula H. (b. 1896) and Robert L. (b. 1898). John Henry McLeroy was a Baptist circuit preacher. Before his marriage to Loula Gray, he had been married to Larissa Baker in 1877. I do not know if there were children from this union. He married for a third time to Esther Cummins just a few months before his death. According to one source, Loula's mother's given name may have been Elvira. Any help would be sincerely appreciated.
