Hi, I'm looking for anyone who ever heard of Meade Figley. This was my grandmother's Father. My grandmother was born in 1900 and I don't know how long her father lived or really anything at all about him except that he was Indian. Her mother's name was Lula (Ritter) Mosely,Figley. Lula's father was brothers with Tex Ritter father. Meade and Lula had three children together Beuhla (my grandmother) Elmer and Eva and I believe Elmer may have a son in Tenaha named J.E. Figley. Would anyone out there have heard of Meade Figley? Thanks, S. Harrison Harrington
I forwarded the comments Tony made about legal rights in cemeteries to some cousins. We have a similar problem with access to a cemetey in west Texas. It is on a ranch and the ranch owner recently built a dam. However, the water did not cover the cemetery and he alows us to visit. But one cousin sent me the letter below. Be warned, it can happen. Grant << j: Re: Texas cemeteries Date: 9/26/99 4:33:32 PM Pacific Daylight Time From: [email protected] (Helen Nunnally) To: [email protected] DON'T TELL ME ANYTHING ABOUT OLD OLD CEMETERIES IN TEXAS. THE STATE OF TEXAS IN FACT DID SELL BUT GOT ON THEIR GOLDEN HORSE AND TRIED TO UNDO WHAT THEY HAD ALREADY DONE, SELL A CEMETERY. I FOUGHT THEM TOOTH AND TOENAIL UNTIL I NO LONGER HAD THE FUNDS TO FIGHT THEM WITH. THE PEOPLE THEY SOLD MY FAMILY CEMETERY TO WERE FROM HOUSTON. THEY PUT A BUS IN THE CEMETERY. THEY ALSO PUT WATER LINES AND OUTDOOR TOILETS IN MY CEMETERY. I FINALLY GOT THE GUTS TO TELL HER, TO EITHER MOVE THOSE TOILETS OR SHE WAS GOING TO FIND HERSELF WEARING A NUMBER INSTEAD OF A NAME. THEY SAID THAT SHE HAD INSTALLED ALL OF THESE PORTOTOILETS IN ORDER TO HAVE SOME KIND OF SEANCE MEETING AND THAT SHE WAS HEAD OF THAT. I HAVE NO PROOF. SHE ALSO TOLD ME THAT SHE WAS GOING TO TAKE UP ALL OF MY MARKERS AND MAKE A PATIO FOR HER BUS. THAT IS WHEN I TOLD HER SHE BETTER NOT MOVE ONE HEADSTONE UNLESS SHE HAD A COURT ORDER STATING THAT SHE COULD REMOVE EACH INDIVIDUAL STONE FOR THAT WAS THE LAW. MY GR. GR. GRANDPARENTS ARE BURIED THERE BUT THERE IS NOTHING I CAN DO....73, INCOME RELATIVELY LOW FOR THE YEAR SINCE WE RETIRED 11-12 YEARS AGO. SO TEXAS CEMETERIES ARE GOVERNED BY THE AMOUNT OF MONEY YOU HAVE. THEY HAVE DONE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT MY CEMETERY AND I USE TO GO THERE AS A CHILD. MY GR. GR. GRANDFATHER WAS BURIED THERE AND I HAVE PROOF THAT HE STARTED THE HELPED TO START THE CHURCH IN THE MIDDLE 1800'S. THE CEMETERY WAS A VERY LARGE ONE BUT LONGER. GREED FOR LAND TOOK OVER. SO IF YOU HAVE A CEMETERY AND YOU CARE FOR IT, AND YOU HAVE THE MONEY, FIGHT FOR IT. I DID ALL I COULD AND I WISH EACH OF YOU COULD GET A GLIMPSE OF WHAT THE CEMETERY THAT I USE TO GO TO AS A CHILD, LOOKS LIKE NOW. THANK YOU FOR HEARING ME OUT AND DO SOMETHING IF YOU HAVE AN OLD CEMETERY. DON'T LET GREED DESTROY YOUR HERITAGE. BLESSINGS, HELEN. >>

Bill Grubbs: I was just cleaning out my e-mail and I noticed that on 06 July 1999 you wrote to Ray Jackson of the Shelby County, Texas GenWeb page: THE FOLLOWING: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Are you aware of any cemeteries that were flooded as a result of the creation of Toledo Bend Reservoir? My wife is doing research on the Jonathon Anderson line and it is believed some of their graves of now inaccessible. Do you have documentation of family burial plots that are not cemeteries as such? Bill Grubbs [email protected] XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX I WROTE THE FOLLOWING TO YOUR e-mail as above, but it returned to me. I am posting it in the event that you notice this. Here is what I wrote to you: I can say that the cemetaries going on line have among them cemetaries that are truly family plots. In fact, many of them started that way. In general, in Texas, law allows an existing cemetary to be added to, but often, the 'stray' names are related or connected by some quirk of life if the cemetary is old. In Texas, we are allowed by law to go onto private property to a cemetary (in general) but sometimes we do not know that they are there. I sense that you are referring to "family only" and there are those listed on the Shelby cemetary page too (family only buried); I presume that you have looked there. If so, you will see a few cemetaries where a small number are buried there and most are of the same name. These are the true family plots. Most were discovered, largely due to the efforts in the 1960's of MR. J.B. SANDERS of Center, Texas (now deceased) and now posted by the GenWeb crew. If Jonathan Anderson is not listed there, you probably will NOT find an undiscovered plot for him. You can notice the 'family plot' cemetaries in the last few days wherein RAY JACKSON has posted with his work, more obscure cemetaries with a few unmarked graves, and I think, one that he (Ray) could not locate precisely. It is fortunate that he posted them, for Mr. Sanders' original publication OUR DEAD, is in limited supply. I don't know where you live, so I don't mean to tell you something that you know better than me, but Toledo Bend probably covered thousands of acres on the Texas side and with it, some cemetaries or isolated graves lost to time, Caddo Indian, Anglo and Black. I know that the home site where my grandmother was born is supposedly under water and before the lake filled, there was some conversation that Carroll Cemetary might go under water. This is a BIG lake. If a person could stand to live that close to the Sabine River before the lake was built, then some small cemetaries probably went under. This is the kind of long shot thing that you might find in Mr. Sanders' materials which were donated to the San Augustine, Texas Library. He had a lakehouse on Toledo Bend and was aware of who lived and died on the Sabine River in the 19th century, although, I doubt if he made a list as such. You know, Jonathan Anderson is one of the earliest settlers of Shelby County patenting two ? abstracts of land. You can get a copy of the original paperwork pertaining to this from the General Land Office of Texas in Austin, either by mail or in person. They are very helpful there. NEXT: is a second e-mail that I sent to you that failed: I wrote: I've told you everything that I know on Jonathan Anderson (and I realize that there might be more than one in the same family) BUT, you might write to Mr. Harold Solomon of Deer Park, Texas. [email protected] He has been kind enough to write me and I noticed that he had "a" Jonathan H. Anderson in his records. I am not an Anderson researcher, but just like to help other researchers. Good luck, Tony Lanagan, Dallas, Texas Regards, Tony Lanagan unfortunately, if your grave that you wish to find is of Jonathan Anderson it is very likely 'unfindable'
Mr. Lindsey, There will be a lot of people to write (respond) to your query about Tex Ritter. So, I stand corrected as you get better answers than this one. The four towns are on the same railroad line, quite close together. Someone else can tell you the name of the RR line. BoBo and Blair are extinct and at least one of them is between Tenaha and Timpson because there is a state marker there. Tex Ritter (and some Ritters today) are from the area of Panola County near Murvual Lake and probably had some land under the lake. This is not too far from these 4 towns. John Ritter, his son, still owns oil and gas mineral rights around Murvual Lake because we had to mail his lease to him in the early 1980's when wells were drilled in the area in the second East Texas Oil Boom. You might find it interesting to know that Jim Reeves and the lesser known, but talented CW singer Linda Davis (of the large Panola County Davis family) are also from Panola County, Texas. Jim Reeves remained more connected to Panola County and this precipitated the founding of the still new country western hall of fame in Panola County which honors Texans. Hopefully someone else will give you the phone numbers/web site for the new museum in Panola.... I have always been told that the term--Tenaha, Timpson, Bobo and Blair. Was called out by conductors on trains in the area, and that the men serving in World War One picked it up as something you say when shooting dice (such as "Ada from Decatur-County seat of Wise") One being if you want to shoot ten and the other if you want eight. It supposedly spread around the country during the war and later the song was written. Has anyone else heard this version?? Anne

Also does anyone know why Tex Ritter would write a song about four small towns in Shelby county? Was he from there?I also wonder if anyone still has one of these old recordings I might listen to. I am looking for information about my great grandfather, who lived in Shelby County at the time of his death. I only have family "stories" about him. One was that he was killed following a card game. I do not know his birth or death date. I think his name was William. His son's name, (my grandfather), was William Pink Buckley. I do not know if he had siblings. Wm Pink died in 1934 at the age of around 58 in Noble, La. At some time some of the family owned city property in Baltimore, Maryland.

I was born in Center, Texas but didn't live there (my parents lived in California at the time, and they went back to Shelby County because my Dad wanted me to be born in Texas) My Dad's family lived in Shelby County for quite a while. I'm retired now, and hope to visit the area to do some family history research in the next year or so. If anyone on the list has info on the Shelby County Brittains (My Dad's Name was A.D. Brittain, My Grandfather's name was Winfield Scott Brittain (W.S.) and my Grandmother's maiden name was Hattie Sapp), I would be glad to exchange my info (which isn't too much at this time). Thank you for your great work on this project. It has already helped me get a feeling of what Shelby County's all about (A lot of good people). ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, August 23, 1999 6:36 PM Subject: Shelby County > I hope since summer is almost over, the mail list will pickup some.
