I just wanted to let the list know that my links to Dixion and Weaver Cemeteries will not be added to the Shelby Co. GenWeb page. The reply I received follows. They wanted to copy my list, alphabetize it, and put it on their pages. I refused. They refused to even give temporary links to my pages. It is my opinion that a list by rows, which helps to show a possible relationship is better than an alphabetical list. Those who control the page don't agree with me. That is their right, just as it is my right to tell them not to copy and alphabetize my list. Dear All, My son-in-law, Mark Leal is a Senior member of K-2 Unit in the Corps of Cadets at Texas A & M. Members of his unit were on the side of the bonfire that collapsed. Mark was not working on the Bonfire site this year. You can go to this site to see the names and pictures of some of 9 of the victims. The last on the list Christopher Heard was in Mark's unit. Please be in prayer for these young men's families and for the buddies they have left behind. I've never heard Mark so down as he was each time I spoke to him today. They all need our uplifting to the Lord. Kay http://bonfire.tamu.edu/

My grandfather, Clinton Filmore Grace was born there in 1899. We do not know his parents names, but he had at least one brother named John Porter who married a Harris, and one sister, Odie, who married a Bailey. Odie and Clinton are buried in White Rock Cemetary. Clinton married Mae (May) Fulsom, daughter of William and Addie Windham Fulsom. Also seeking information on those families. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Please email me. Thank you. --part1_0.c8b85dd4.25636ed3_boundary--
>From book: "The Heroes Of San Jacinto" by Sam Huston Dixon and Louis Wiltz Kemp, The Anson Jones Press, copyright 1932. Page 305 "Second Regiment Texas Volunteers Company - Calvary" Page 313 "King, William P. Born in Georgia, from which state he emi- grated to Texas in 1836. He was granted land by the Shelby county board in 1838. He died in San Augustine in 1842, leaving a wife and four children. George W. Cartwright was appointed administrator of his estate February 28, 1842." There was also a Capt. King, appearing in the book "History of Texas From Its First Settlement to 1685 to Its Annexation To the United States in 1846" by H. Yoakum. Page 86 "Hearing of the advance of the Mexicans upon Refugio, Colonel Fannin sent Captain King with twenty-eight men to remove some families yet at the mission. King reached there on the 12th of March, but seemed to have delayed his departure until the advance of Urrea's cavalry came up..." Page 89 & 90 "To return to Captain King. He had been sent out, on the morning of the 14th, to reconnoitre; but his return to the mis- sion being cut off, he attempted to reach Goliad. He lost his way, however, and found himself, after two days' march (on the morning of the 16th), only three miles from the mission, in an open prairie, and his ammunition wet. Under these cir- cumstances, he was surrounded, and obliged to surrender, pre- vious to which one of his men was mortally wounded. In six hours afterward, Captain King and his command were shot, on the road to Goliad, about a mile from the mission, and, being stripped of their clothing, were left a prey to wild beasts!" The researcher, might want to check out this web site for The Handbook of Texas, http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/ and perform a search in the K section of the on-line book.
I thought there might be several persons on the list interested in this. Gene Rivers >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >From the Nashville Tennessean, Tuesday, November 16, 1999: Retired Brig. Gen. Austin Shofner dies Shelbyville, Tenn. (AP) -- Retired Brig. Gen. Austin Shofner, who managed to keep a diary hidden while in a Japanese prisoner of war camp during World War II, died yesterday at his home. He was 83. Shofner's diary, chronicling his experiences in several POW camps and his eventual escape through the Philippine jungles, is preserved in the Tennessee State Library and Archives. It describes the hardships of the POW camps, where he watched fellow soldiers beaten and killed or dying from starvation and disease. His listing in the "Tennessee Encyclopedia of History and Culture" calls the diary a "valuable historical record of the war in the Philippines." Shofner and nine other Marines took advantage of work details outside the camp walls to escape the Davao POW camp. He received the Distinguished Service Cross from Gen. Douglas MacArthur in 1943 and participated in various battles in the Pacific to liberate the Philippines. He retired from the military in 1959 with the rank of brigadier general, returned to his native Bedford County and was active in local Republican politics. Survivors include four sons and seven grandchildren. Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday at Shofner Lutheran Church in Shelbyville.
