    1. Tenaha City Cemetery
    2. I saw an article in the Timpson & Tenaha News paper dated Jan. 6, 2000 concerning the Tenaha City Cemetery being vandalized over the last month. Several of Tenaha's pioneer citizens are buried there. Albert Burns is in charge of both Tenaha cemeteries and said "Not only will it be extra work and extra expense, but this cemetery is always short on funds because only a few are left who have ralatives buried there." What a rotten shame!!! Jane Sanford Keppler

    1. James H. SCATES
    2. Barbara Scates
    3. James H. SCATES was instrumental in establishing the First Baptist Church in Center, Shelby, TX. A family member just recently informed me about a book written by James H. SCATES. The subject of the book was of a religious nature and most likely would have been written in the late 1800's. James SCATES was a Baptist preacher and also served as Shelby County Treasurer in the 1880's. According to historical records, he was a school teacher in the Bunea Vista area in the 1860's and a member of the Newburn Masonic Lodge. He and his wife, Sarah, lived in the Cedar Yard community. I REALLY need to know who his parents were. He was orphaned at a young age in Alabama along with his brother, William Turner SCATES. It has been said that his brother, William, also lived in Shelby County, but I have not found any records to verify that information. I am wondering if anyone knows anything about this book or has any information about James H. SCATES. I am not sure what information is available to the public in the Masonic records, but perhaps the answers lie there. Any help will be appreciated! This was very common in the old days when a Mason would move across country. As communication methods were so poor, he would simply withdraw his membership from a Lodge, for instance in North Carolina, and head west, and when he settled, present his dimit, dimmit, demit, etc., to a new Lodge, and petition for afilliation there. This is normally not done nowadays. A Mason usually applies for a plural or dual membership in a second Lodge and might eventually withdraw his membership from the previous one. According to my father, MM (Master Mason), it refers to a member that has either moved his membership or left the lodge -- been removed from the rolls which may be done for non payment of dues. My gg-grandfather, Stephen Francis Ray joined the Truitt Lodge in 1872 and demitted in Feb of 1874 ; he'd moved to Johnson Co. Ray married Alvenia Rozella Johnston in DeSoto Parish LA in 1855. She was the daughter of Moses Johns(t)on who died circa 1872 in Shelby Co and sister (or stepsister) of Sally Johnson Carroll wife of Thomas Carroll. I would greatly appreciate any information on the children of this Moses Johnston who were in Shelby Co in 1860 and then disappeared.
