He said in the 1867 Voter Registration that he had been in Nacogdoches county, TX for 25 years, which would make it ca 1842. His name is on the tax list in 1846 and thenceforward he was an active citizen of Nacogdoches County. He died in 1890. He married Elizabeth B. WHITE on 9 September 1945. Elizabeth came from the Joseph WHITE family of Anson Co, NC. Members of this large family, including Elizabeth's father, Joel White and mother Sarah, migrated to Perry Co, TN in the early 1820s and Elizabeth was born ca 1826-28. They may have gone to MS briefly, but by the late 1830s, this family was living in Shelby County, TX. We think the Joel White who had land in Shelby Co was Elizabeth's brother, and that her father Joel White died in TN, but it is somewhat confusing. I would love to put my head together with any descendants of this family. I have the feeling Elizabeth had siblings we don't even know about. One that we do know about was Sarah Jane White who married Asa YARBOROUGH. I have a little bit of info about them. Another sibling was probably Wiley G. WHITE who was married to Mary Ann ?? but divorced in Nacogdoches in 1851. Elizabeth also had a brother, Joel, Jr. and another brother, Joseph White. Joel and Joseph may have been twins. By 1850, Asa Moore and Elizabeth White Moore were living in the northeastern part of Nacogdoches County near Cedar Point. They had a couple of daughters of their own (ultimately they had 11 children -- see the web site for details), and were also raising a child of unknown parentage. His name was Clem Benton White Moore or C.B. (White) Moore. Clem was born in TN ca 1842. He was a CSA veteran, lived in Williamson Co, TX in 1870, moved to Lampasas Co, then to OK. Would love to hear from anyone who knows anything about Clem's parentage. Another person, Richard WALLING was also living with Asa Moore and Elizabeth on the 1850 census. Was he related at all or just a young farm hand? Who can tell me more? After 1860, Asa Moore and family moved south of Nacogdoches to the community eventually known as Press. It is also sometimes called Mt. Horeb. Eventually, Asa Moore owned over 2000 acres that had originally been the Pedro Esparza grant, and his descendants still own much of that land. Asa Moore also owned land and buildings on the square in Nacogdoches, and I have been told also owned land from New Caney to Corsicana. I know after he died his son Sterling was paying taxes on some land in Van Zandt Co, TX. Asa Moore was an active member of Nacogdoches' historic Milam Lodge #2. We have wondered, though, did he belong to a different lodge, perhaps Chireno or Melrose, or a lodge in Shelby County? Does his name ring any bells with anyone? Recently, I have heard a story from two different people that Asa Moore had been married prior to marrying Elizabeth White and that there were a couple of children from that prior marriage living down around Port Lavaca. I have no names, no dates, no nothing. Does anybody have anything, any clue to help me from going nuts? I have also been told that Asa Moore was somehow kin to "the Moores that were at San Jacinto (i.e., the Battle). More hair-tearing time. Any clues to help me keep my sanity? I have created a web site where I have attempted to put the information I have about Asa and Elizabeth Moore and their children in some kind of logical, genealogical order. There are pictures, and the pages from his bible have been uploaded. Please check it out at http://www.webnac.com/asamoore and let me know if you connect or have any information to add. He had loads of descendants. I know some of you. Any others who are online, please let me know about you. Thanks to everyone for bearing with me. Sincerely, Pam Phillips Email: webpsalms@iname.com --part1_86.10e2fa.25b06779_boundary--
Just wanted to let everyone know that I have added a few more pages to my listing of the 1900 Shelby Co. Census. Pages 210A (sheet 12) through 225A (sheet 27) are now included (1087 names). The index has also been updated. This is still only a part of Enumeration District 92. I hope this helps someone. More pages will be added as time permits. Because the list has been active recently I am reposting: Does anyone have a connection to the Alexanders who moved from Weakley Co, TN to Shelby Co approx 1854. Ralph J Alexander, born SC 1817 and his wife, Harriet Landrum Alexander, born TN. They lived in the Sardis Community on the 1860 census (shown at that time as Grahams Mill) They had several children and my ancestors, Charlie Faris Alexander was born in Shelby Co in 1862. The parents and several of the children died, probably from an epidemic shortly thereafter and Charlie was raised by his Aunt and Uncle, Erasmus Hill Hearne and his wife, Caroline Jane Alexander Hearne. One of Charlie's sister's, called Tennessee b approx 1855, later married Burl Eaves and moved to Houston where she died in the 1930's. Any help appreciated with the Alexanders, Hearnes and Eaves. Thanks!
My Dad was raised on a farm in the Sabine River Bottom between Shelbyville and Converse. I have heard him tell many stories about the River, Haleys Ferry, Mikes Ferry and other events associated with the communities that are probably now under water. If any of you have any history of any of these communities , locations, or events that took place between about 1900 and 1940 I would love to hear from you. I am considering writing a book of the memoirs of my fathers family and life in Rural Shelby County and De Soto parish of the pre and post Depression Era. I am also looking for old photos of that area before the resevoir work began. Thank you Sammy Lee
There were two articles in the History of Shelby County, one was written by Evelyn BIGGAR, the other one written by V.V.RAMSEY. Does anyone know how to contact either of these people?? Jane Sanford Keppler
