My Mother ,from James community Shelby County , told me the reason was to keep the weeds under control .After that was accomplished the whole yard was cleaned with a "brush broom " Small limbs were cut from trees in the fall after the leaves had fallen ,then they were bunched & tied together to make a "brush broom "This was their rake to clean the yard . My Mom said it was the children's responsibility to keep the yard clean (In their family ) Karen Nobles Edson -----Original Message----- From: J. A. Sandy, No one has ever told me why the grass was picked back, so I am open to other suggestions. However, I have heard it said that a lot of people thought that this would cut down on the number of critters up in your yard in the 'wilderness'--such as snakes. At the least, if your dog didn't see 'um coming, you might. Also, the push lawn mower was invented in the 1800's, but I've never heard of early use of it in rural areas of the South. Once you got yard growth under control, use of the hoe was one way was one way to keep things under control and mark off your yard as a well maintained domain. Tony Lanagan
I was just rereading over some bios that people on this list sent in last August giving a brief history of who they were and were they lived. I noticed that a couple of you mentioned when you were small and visited your grandparents or great-grandparents, that the yard was picked clean of grass. Why was that? Another question: I have found several Askins in Dixon Cemetery, haven't determined if they are of my line yet. But I noticed that there were three children in the same family who died in 1910. A 5-year old died Jan 1910, a 3year old died Oct 25, 1910, and a son died at birth May 1910. Was there some epidemic that hit the county in that year? Thanks for reading, Sandra
Just a reminder! If you want to see a listing, by row, of Weaver Cemetery or Dixon Cemetery just drop by http://www.flash.net/~parino/cem_links.htm . You will also find a listing and index to the 1900 Shelby Co., TX census for that part of the county. Jim Barrett
Florence is a cousin of all of us descended from James McCauley. She is the granddaughter of Thomas T. McCauley, son of James. I visited with her when I began my research in 92/93. She died this past spring. She had one son, Bobby, who lives in Kilgore, I believe. She might have one sister still living in Bryan, TX. Florence was active in the DAR and lived in San Augustine. She grew up on the original McCauley land grant and had some wonderful stories to tell me about family. I love the one about the young man who climbed a tall pine tree and stayed there all night while the recruiters were searching for him to serve in the confederate army. She shared a letter from T.T. to his wife which was written while he was encamped at Hempstead during the above referenced war. She had tintypes and other photos of unnamed relatives. I will be glad to share what I have. Olivia A. Happy 2000: As we go into a new century I just want to touch base on a few issues regarding the Shelby County mailing list. This list is for genealogy related to Shelby County. In the subject heading please use a surname or some subject so that others can simply delete if they do not want to read all the email. Please respond DIRECTLY to the sender and not to the mailing list. When you see a thread veering off the subject, and want to get back to genealogy, please do NOT write to the list and complain. You can write to me, but the best and most effective way to veer back to genealogy is simply to send a query or a piece of information about your family in Shelby County. This immediately gets people's attention back to the subject of the list without any chance of starting a flame war with on-list complaints. It really works! Any complaints, criticism, Etc., should be directed directly to me and not the mailing list. I want to assure everyone that the Listowner is here and reads everything. If you do need to reach the listowner, please write to me *directly* at Shelb yTX@aol.com The addressTXSHELBY-L-request@rootsweb.com is an automated computer. You should only send Subscribe and Unsubscribe command there. If you have a message you want to send to the list, please send it to TXSHELBY-L@rootsweb.com (no -request in there). You must be a subscriber to post, and must post using the email you subscribed under. Please don't send unsubscribe requests to the list address. Send them to the -request address. Just put one word unsubscribe' -- no quotes in the BODY of the message. If you get a message saying you were not unsubscribed because you were not on the subscriber list, but you are getting the messages, it means that the email address you used to subscribe was different from the one you used to try to unsubscribe. That message comes from the automated computer, NOT from me! Think what address you used to subscribe and try again. If you still have trouble, write to me directly at ShelbyTX@aol.com and I will try to help. Sincerely, Jane Sanford Keppler
Can anyone help me with this person? Mary Elizabeth Moody Metcalf Mary Elizabeth Moody was reportedly born in Louisiana on 17 Oct 1843. She died 1 Feb 1911 in Shelby County Texas. She married William Baird Metcalf in Griffin, Cherokee, Texas. One of her grandsons told me that she came to Shelby County from Baton Rouge. She appears in the 1850 census in the household of her father James Moody and mother Ann. They both stated that they were born in Georgia. All her siblings were born in Alabama. Siblings were William, John, Domalitte (f) and Levy. Family tradition is that William Baird married a Sarah Bowden after Mary died and I find a Sarah Metcalf in Our Dead. However, I have an old picture of an older lady that is marked on the back as Mary Elizabeth Bowden Metcalf does. William Bairds obit states that he was a Confederate veteran but I can find no record of this. Any help would be appreciated Dan Capps
