To all those who asked where to find the 1847 petition, here are the steps. To find the petition, go to USGenWeb Home page, click on State Archives Search Engine; on the next screen, in the "Query" space, type exactly the following--- Shelby AND petition --- and select TX. The petition comes up as match #3 of 4. Lynn
Weaver Community: Just a reminder! If you want to see a listing, by row, of Weaver Cemetery or Dixon Cemetery just drop by http://www.flash.net/~parino/cem_links.htm . You will also find a listing and index to the 1900 Shelby Co., TX census for that part of the county. Jim Barrett
I'm REALLY sorry, everyone. I found my copy of the petition I have, and it's not the 1838 Petition. It's a transcription of an 1847 Petition. I found it through the USGenWeb search engine. Wouldn't the Texas State Archives be able to send you a copy of the 1838 Petition? I will investigate that possibility. I'm really sorry that I got everyone's hopes up for nothing. Lynn : (
Sorry that I didn't give more info, but, sometimes, if emails are too long, people just don't read them, then too, I don't seem to have the talent of condensing what I have to say. According to the SCHS Newsletter, dated Aug. 14, 1991-- "This Petition, is on a single sheet of paper, folded to form 4 pages. The preceding part of the petition is on the first 3 pages and appears to have been written in not more than two hands. Legibility is not good. The list that follows is the fourth page, all written in one hand." This info was attached to the original petition, and was not a notation given as someone's opinion. Also in this particular Newsletter - "There follows this about 100 or 150 names of citizens of Shelby County, Republic of Texas, which has been copied from STRIPES publication. These are familiar names that have come down from generation to generation in this county. This list is on file in the SCmuseum, and you are invited to review this at the museum. David Canon is listed among these names also." I would love to receive an image of this Petition, an original handwritten one. Then I could figure out how to bring it into a computer program, and turn it every which way, magnify it, etc., to be able to figure for myself, some of these names who signed. Question: Where did the original Petition come from, as in where would one write to obtain a copy of the original. Surely not Shelby Co., Courts, as their records burned. The info in the newsletter indicates that a list of the names is on file in the SC museum, but does not indicate it is a copy of the original handwritten record, but perhaps more of a transcription of the names. Thanks, Sallie
Sallie & Gene, I think I have a copy of that petition, but can't lay my hands on it at the moment. I found it on line and made a print (probably a no-no), but I won't know where I found it until I find my copy. I will be looking and let you know when I find it. Lynn

From the August 14, 1991 (and previous) Shelby County Historical Society Newsletter, I noticed that there was info of a Petition, dated April 7th, 1838, in which citizens had signed and presented to the Republic of TX, Senate & House of Representatives, asking that county lines be changed, as to help those living in the larger distance away from the county seat, as it took quite a while for a citizen in these areas to travel to the county seat, to meet certain county obligations, thereby leaving their families unprotected. Among the names subscribed to the Petition, were David Cannon and Lewis Watkins, who were related to my husband's Cannon family. Anyone have a true copy of that particular document, or maybe a list of all of the names that signed the petition. I surely would like to see this list of names, as to check it for any other names that might be connected to the Cannon family, showing that they were in TX by 1838. Thanks, Sallie Cannon
The Shelby County Historical Society is very proud and honored to be the recipient of a grant from the Center for East Texas Studies at SFASU. Many thanks to Dr. Jere Jackson head of the Center for their many years of support to the society and museum. CETS contributed toward the purchase of a transcription machine so the society may start transcribing our oral histories. Also in the plans is the purchase of a mobile Global Positioning System (GPS) unit so volunteers may relocate all county cemeteries and assign a permanent longitude and latitude to them. This will greatly help preserve the location for the next 100 plus years. The third item or items is assistance with the purchase of archival supplies. Many thanks to Dr. Jackson and the CETS at Stephen F. Austin State University. More information will be released as the projects unfold. -- Shelby County Historical Society Shelby County Museum and Genealogy Research Library Post Office Box 1542 230 Pecan Street Center, Texas 75935-1542 tel:936/598-3613 fax: 936/591-0959 schs@panola.cc.tx.us www.panola.cc.tx.us/~schs Monday - Friday 1:00 - 4:00 Saturdays 10:00 - 2:00 After hours by appointment
