Yes, I certainly like the reminder to check things out. I go too long between visits when left to my own devices. I have to really apologize to these lists. Earlier in the week I put out a note about my great aunt Sallie Carter Wills who lived around McLennan, Comanche and Hamilton counties. She was born 1876 and died 1950. She suffered from asthma. She had some type of medicine that she would put in a bowl, strike a match to it, take it outside and breathe in the smoke that came from it. It didn't catch on fire but would smoke. Do you know what this was or have you heard of it? It really helped her asthma. I got a lot of responses sent directly to my email address which were wonderful folklore and family stories. Sometime yesterday, there was a hiccup in my pc and now a lot of stuff is just gone. My husband is looking into what gremlin might have eaten my emails, but in the meantime I have lost all your wonderful stories. Many of you said your grandparents used sage and marijuana, etc. Someone sent me a wonderful web site of indian healing medicines. I hate that I have lost these stories. I wanted the information only to include in aunt sallie's family history write up. If you don't mind, would you please re-post to the lists so all can see. Thanks, Sandra Carter Van Wyk Denton County Texas

Dr. Len B. Hughes spoke before a full room during last Thursday's Historical Society meeting. Dr. Hughes presented a very interesting program on the Hughes Genealogy and the research avenues he used to complete the book. The best advise Dr. Hughes gave the audience was "Prior to researching your family, my best advise is to study the history of the area. Learn all you can about the people, customs, and events that shape the area. Then start looking into your family genealogy. This process will help immensely when it comes to documenting facts and particulars about your family members." After the meeting refreshments were served by the Society. Guests had an opportunity to sign copies of Dr. Hughes' book and visit with him about his research and travels. If you have any questions about Dr. Hughes or his research or wish to obtain a copy of his book, please call or email the society. -- Shelby County Historical Society Shelby County Museum and Genealogy Research Library Post Office Box 1542 230 Pecan Street Center, Texas 75935-1542 tel:936/598-3613 fax: 936/591-0959 schs@panola.cc.tx.us www.panola.cc.tx.us/~schs Monday - Friday 1:00 - 4:00 Saturdays 10:00 - 2:00 After hours by appointment
Benavides Texas is a city in the Rio Grande Valley. You might check Social Security Death Records. I had a request for information on a GI and found that he was deceased. My dad recently told me about his aunt Sally who lived around McLennan, Comanche and Hamilton counties. I sent this to several lists. I apologize if you are getting this on multiple lists. Sandra

Howdy folks! I have been "digging" in Shelby County for a few years now and never subscribed to the mail list. 'bout time. My husband's grandmother Jimmie Lillian Adams was born in Shelby County in 1907. Her parents were Mary Francis Lout and John Richard Adams, both born in Shelby County. Evidently the Adams and Lout family lines in Shelby County go waaaaaaay back, and there's a bunch of them (grin). Jimmie married Thomas Bookout in 1926-they are my husband Tom's grandparents. Thomas had been married previously to Kate Moore (died 1922, buried in Fields Cemetery) and Molly Lout (died 1925, buried Rather Cemetery). Thomas was left with a small son (Coy, son of Molly) and he married Jimmie, Molly's cousin. So you can see lots of Shelby County connections. Supposedly Thomas bought the land where Fields Cemetery is located. It is across the road from Shelbyville High School. He would have ties to the Fields family through marriage. The land also was where the old MECS church was located. I would LOVE to find out what happened to this property-who owns it now? Has the cemetery been located? Always love to share info with "cuzzins". Meg Gentry Bookout

Sometimes I get a message on the List that seems to be the middle of an on-going conversation. Am I missing some of the messages? Or is there some other explanation? Lynn
I believe her name to be Minnie Corrine Eddins Taylor Goodwyn Talbert. I believe she was born 12-2-1897 and died 6-29-1994 in Shelby county and is buried in Rather Cemetery. I just found out she married in 1921 (?) to a William Austin Goodwyn who was widowed from Mariah F. Wiggins. W.A. and Mariah had 2 children Willie Arlene Goodwyn and Annie Jane Goodwyn. I don't believe W.A. and Minnie had any children. W.A. died in 1940 and she subsquently married a Tom Talbert. I know she was alive in 1981 because she signed some mineral rights papers. If anyone knows anything about any of these people, expecially Minnie, I would love to hear from you. I wasn't aware of this 2nd marriage of W.A. until today when a landman called. Thanks!
