Shelby County Historical Society News Update! * Progress is being made on the locating of lost cemeteries of Shelby County. This weekend volunteers located, photographed and inventoried three lost cemeteries. Ray Jackson with ROOTSWEB will be placing them on their site in the near future. Through guidance and information from the Texas Historical Commission in Austin, we are making great gains in this field. * By the end of the month, the GPS/GIS inventory system should be up and running at the Society. Trimble Navigation will be assisting in the final layout and startup so all cemeteries in Shelby County may be permanently located. A special thanks to Dr. Jere Jackson and the Center for East Texas Studies for helping make this possible. * Preceptor Upsilon Sorority made a generous donation to the Capital Campaign 2001. Through their donation we are presently at 21% of our goal of $19,500. Our first item on our campaign list can be marked off - a new copier! It was purchased last month with funds raised thus far. Thanks to everyone who has helped thus far in our fundraising efforts. Item #2 is a new roof for the Museum building. * Volunteers are continuously receiving items to add to the Society's museum collection. Books, family histories, photographs, clothing, mementos, and much, much more. If you have a treasured family item that you would like to share and preserve for future generations to enjoy, please contact Chris Mahan at the museum. * March 3rd will mark the evaluation and review of the Society's Policy & Procedures' Manual. Through a special grant from the American Associations of Libraries and Museum a MAP I grant was received in 1999. The final step is the review process. Thanks to all of the volunteers for their extra dedication and hard work. * New exhibit under construction: "A Look Into a Turn of the Century Classroom" Contact Reba James, Ray Jackson, Chris Mahan or Debbie Askew on a list of items still needed to complete the exhibition. * NEXT MEETING OF THE SOCIETY, FEBRUARY 22ND. Does anyone know why the New Hope Cemetery, located on US 84, about 1.1 miles east of the county line between Rusk Co. and Shelby Co. is not includes on the Shelby Co. web page? The cemetery is well kept and is marked by a sign on the highway I would record it, but the last three cemeteries I records where not accepted for posting to the web page. Please note: This is not the same cemetery as the New Hope that is on the list. Jim Barrett Bedford,TX parino@flash.net
Judy, I sent this to your AOL address but it bounced: B. Mitchell Hi, I saw your request on the Shelby Co. website. I have a book by J.B. Sanders titled Marriage Records of Shelby Co. Tx. 1882-1936. It shows Thomas Brice marrying Missouri Warren Dec. 9,1887 with a record page of 2-24. I believe that you could contact the Courthouse Records & maybe get more info. However, a lot of the time ; they failed to list their parentage or previous state lived. If you can locate a copy of the census record for 1880; it might have what you are looking for. The Montgomery County Genealogical and Historical Society only has about 100 copies of The History of Montgomery County left. We have just started a program to ensure all schools in Montgomery County have a copy of this wonderful book. To offset expensives, we need sponsors to help fund this program. The books are now selling for $35.00 (plus $5.00 for postage). Bluebonnet Sponsorship=$10.00-$25.00 Mockingbird Sponsorship=$50.00-$100.00 Lone Star Sponsorship=$200.00-$500.00 To sponsor, please send your name (or company name), address, phone and email address along with payment to MCGSH P. O. Box 867 Conroe, TX 77305-0867 Please be sure and mark it as sponsor. Vol. 2 is now in the planning stages. This will take quite some time, so publication is not expected for 4-5 years. It has been 20 years since Vol. 1 was published, so there is lots to add. I will let everyone know when we will be accepting family information, so don't wait to start on this. Start getting the information ready along with photos. thanks, Jane Keppler
I'm looking for info on the following marriage: Eugenia Cordelia York b. February 10, 1872 in Rusk County, TX to John William York and Mary Oliver Berry. She was married to a Claud A Smith on ?? February 14, 1889?? I'm not sure of date and don't know where. Family lore says he was a "horrible" husband and she left him. She was married again on July 30, 1902 in Stewart, Rusk, TX to William Floyd Graham. Supposedly she said she wouldn't marry again unless the suitor paid for her divorce and Floyd (my great grandpa did!!!) I'd like to find some "real" info as to where they got married, if this date is correct and where/when they divorced. thanks for any help anyone can provide! Sherry Dupre sdupremom@aol.com

Is there anyone that could do a marriage lookup for me? I'm looking for the surname Claude E. Thedford, or C. E. Thedford. He probably married after 1920. I don't know the bride's name. Best regards, Lorrie Thedford lorriet@mindspring.com
Anyone have any old photos of: DAVID R. CANNON, b. 1811 SC, d. 1886 Shelby Co., TX, and MARY ELIZABETH "POLLY" TODD, b. 1823 GA, d. 1900? I understand that they were married prior to 1846 TX. Perhaps someone has a photo of them, or, some of their descendants, and would consider sending a scanned image, so I might compare? Thanks, Sallie

Hello Everyone, I would like to trace the Welch families that lived in Shelby Co. Tx. I do not know yet whether or not they are related to my Welch family that ended up in San Augustine Co. in 1870--but there is a good chance that the families were connected in some way. I am going ahead and keeping track of all the Welch's that lived on the border of Louisiana and Texas--as I know for sure that the families the Welch's married into moved around East Texas and also into Louisiana. It looks like I have a collection of Welch's coming from Georgia and Mississippi into Arkansas, then Texas and Louisiana. It makes an interesting big picture and history of our Welch's as a whole, so I hope you will understand that I'm interested in any Welch family, not just my own. Of course, I will be happy to share what I have with any of you. There were the following Welch families in Shelby Co., that I'd love to find out more about: Tommy Welch compilation - Shelby Co. My great grandmother was probably the daughter of Robert McWilliams and Mary Ann Cannon of Shelby County, Texas, but I can't prove it. I could use some help. My great grandmother, Mary McWilliams, was born about 1838 in South Carolina; her mother was from South Carolina and her father was from Ireland. Robert Mcwilliams was from Ireland, his wife Mary Amm Cannon was from South Carolina, and they had a daughter Mary A. McWilliams born about 1838 in South Carolina. The trouble is, the middle name of my Mary McWilliams is said to have been Elizabeth. My great grandmother Mary McWilliams married first Frank Augusta Arnold, Jr. Children were: 1. Elizabeth Arnold, born about 1859; she married a George Skinner of Denison, Texas. 2. Frank Augusta Arnold, Jr., born 10 Jan. 1861 in Shelby Co., TX; died 28 Aug. 1940 in Anson, Jones Co., TX. Mary married second on 10 Jan. 1865 Rev. Thomas Butler Norwood (Methodist) son of William Coleson Norwood and his wife Elizabeth Wade LeGrand of San Augustine Co., TX. Rev. Norwood preached at Shelbyville, Shelby Co., TX in the early 1860's. Children: 1. Alpha Lee Norwood (my grandfather) born probably at Daingerfield, Texas on 5 Sept. 1867; died 16 Feb. 1938 at Drumright, Ceek Co., OK 2. Thomas Bascom Norwood born 31 Jan. 1869 probably at Daingerfield, Texas; died 26 Dec. 1837 at Arlington, Tarrant Co., TX. 3. Emma Norwood born about 1871. She married W. C. Grounds and lived at Roseburg, Oregon in 1912. 4. Burta Norwood born about 1873. She lived at Durant Oklahoma in 1912. 5. Nell Norwood born 12 Feb. 1875; died 10 May 1966 in Denison, Grayson Co., TX. 6. Tranquilla Norwood born about 1878. She married O. F. Kolb and lived at Haskell, Texas in 1912. Mary (Mcwilliams) Norwood died on 22 May 1910 in Durnat, Bryan Co., OK. Rev. T. B. Norwood died in 1912. They are both buried at Durant. John Norwood
