According to the records of the Mangum Funeral Home in Center TX the interment was in the Joaquin Cemetery. I was only 7 years old and have very little memory of that time. The burial would have been on June 29 of 1944. After that date I have had no contact with any of his family because I was moved away from that area. To my knowledge I have no immediate family living that could help me with this question. I have visited the Cemetery and found no headstone. Could he be buried there and a headstone was never put in placed? I did see the headstones of George W. and Mary E. Hunt which were my grandparents. I feel sure my father is buried there and would very much like to know. I would appreciate any help you could give me. Thank you, Beverly Ann (Hunt) Boatman bevboatman@wcnet.net
VOLUNTEERS PRESERVE LOCAL HISTORY What is PIT? Passport in Time, also known as PIT, is a volunteer program, inviting the public to share in the thrill of discovery through archaeological and historic research. Forest Service Archaeologists and Historians guide volunteers in activities ranging from building restoration to rock art recording to archaeological site excavation. PIT is a national program comprised of over 40 excavation oriented projects from Alaska to Florida per year. One project was located in Shelby County on a recently discovered "lost" cemetery found on US Forest Service land just off FS 147 near Toledo Bend Reservior. Some 60 people from all over the United States spent the last week and a half clearing brush, taking measurements, photographing, recording field notes, using ground penetrating radar (GPR) and researching courthouse records on this lost cemetery now known as the Eddins Cemetery. Last Tuesday evening, the group enjoyed a BBQ chicken dinner with all the trimmings hosted by the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce. Martha Rushing, Tourism Committee chair, cordinated the arrangements along with John Warner for an enjoyable supper and evening in historic downtown Center. PIT volunteers were also treated to gift bags and free movie passes to the RIO Theater donated by the Shelby County Historical Society and Texas Forest Service. For further information on this project or the PIT program visit the Shelby County Historical Society's web site at www.panola.cc.tx.us/~schs.
Hi Priscilla- I can't help with info on Thomas Moore, but I noticed the name HOLLINGSWORTH. My grandmother was Dorothy Hollingsworth, and I have been researching the name for a number of years. There is a Hollingsworth mail list, if you are interested. Good luck! Meg Gentry Bookout ps-my Hollingsworth line was not in TX (well, briefly in the late 1830s, but THAT'S another story!!!) I don't know who you can hire to do this. To my knowledge, the unit the USFS was using belongs to the service, but not to the Lufkin office. They where talking about when they would need to return it. My guess would be to contact a Civil Engineer. The US Forest Service along with an army of "Passport In Time" volunteers have spent the last week clearing a cemetery and taking part in an archeological investigation. Some information and pictures may be seen at: http://www.southernregion.fs.fed.us/texas/PIT2002/daily_updates.html The cemetery, which the USFS first referred to as Ford-Anderson and now refers to as Eddins, was cleared and a new fence will be placed around it. Cemetery Location - From the northeast (more or less) corner of the square in Center - take TX 87 southeast for 13.8 miles to FM 139 (there is a sign for Ragtown Recreation Area). Turn left. Follow FM 139 for 6.9 miles, bear right onto FM 3184. Continue on FM 3184 for 3.8 miles. Turn left onto FR 126 (aka CR2 2700). Continue on FR126 for .7 miles. Turn right onto FR 147. Continue for .9 miles. The cemetery is located on a ridge to the left. I was fortunate to be able to take part in the first four days of this project. During that time the cemetery was cleared, location of stones recorded, and the area of the cemetery was checked with ground penetrating radar. No commercially prepared markers were found. There were several field stones which may have been used as markers. One of these stones had the letters I A scratched into it. At the time I had to leave, the stones had not been turned to check the back sides. I'm sure this has been done by now, but I don't know if other markings have been found. If you know anything about this cemetery or the early families of that area the USFS staff at Lufkin would like to hear from you. The crew should still be at the site today and tomorrow. Others will be at the Dreka Service Center which is on FM 3184, about .2 mile past its intersection with FM 139. John Ippolito, Forest Heritage Manager, may be contacted at jippolito@fs.fed.us 936-639-8528 and Velicia R. Bergstrom, Assistant Forest Heritage Manager, may be reached at vbergstrom@fs.fed.us 936-639-8531. I'd like to thank the USFS for allowing me to take part in this PIT project, and for the work they have done to restore and protect one of our lost cemeteries.
