    2. I was born in Logansport, that was the closest medical place, the Sanitarium. HA>>>>see that is what is wrong with me. I was not supposed to have lived as the doctor dropped an instrument on my head. I still have about a 2 inch round bald spot. My grandmother always told me that it took about 3 years for that to heal. My grandfather helped deliver me. My father and Mother were separated...hum...nothing has changed in these days, has it?? 2. JANE SAID ... I have thoroughly enjoyed the discussion. At least it has got the list active again. I just moved to Leander TX last week, so will not be able to go "home" very often, probably just for funerals or reunions. We played all the games that have been in the discussion at my grandparents farm in Joaquin. What memories! Thanks, Jane Sanford Keppler sponsor for Shelby,& Montgomery County TX DeSoto Parish, LA. Am gonna look up Leander ... :-) Have been led by my grandmother's birth certificate ... to DeSoto Parish ... Mansfield and Logansport, to do research. ***I always thought she was born and reared in Shelby County ... *** until we found her birth certificate ... and that helped us find her mom and dad's marriage license ... and also ... the license of when her mom then married Pawpaw, after Mr. Hicks died. :-) >>>Strange how one little piece of paper can lead to so much information.<<< Je taime for now. xxoo Macile (I really enjoyed this series of notes also ... brought back lots of good memories)

    3. Janice, I believe this is what you describe is akin to the "Tin Can Violin" or "Moose Call" or "Bull Horn". Thos that were good at pulling the string could make it sound like a bull bellowing back off in the woods. You punch a hole in the bottom of a tin can using a hammer and a nail. Thread a long cotton shoelace (or heavy cotton string) through the hole and tie a knot inside the can. Hold the shoelace firmly with a wet cloth and pull allowing the shoelace to slowly slip through the cloth. You will hear a loud honking sound. It sounds like a moose. This moose call operates on the same principle as the most expensive Stradivarius. We punched a hole in the bottom for a long string to dangle through, coated the string with pine resin, hid in the woods and pulled the string with a glove. Depending on the length of the string and the size of the can, all kinds of horrific sounds could be made. My Dad taught me to make one, but I forgot what he called it. I'm writing a story about one and need the name . 3. What about Mumbley Peg? Boys would take an open pocket knife and stand spread legged and try to throw it in the center of the space between their feet. They would get narrower and narrower until all but one chickened out or there was bloodshed -- which wasn't all that common. -----Original Message----- From: B. 1. Games
    2. A game played at recess (1918-1925 in Gooberhill, Shelby Co., Texas---I can provide surnames if necessary) was called "Fox and Hounds". 2 were chosen as foxes and given a section of woods and a 15 minute start. Then the rest were hounds and took off in pursuit, running and barking and just being dogs. Miles through woods & creeks got rid of a lot of built up energy (no calming-down medication was dispensed). The hunt was over when the teacher blew a cow horn to call all the little animals in. M.

    2. <PRE>Yes, I agree, the game is called "Annie Over", not ante over. London Bridge was not ashes, ashes, all fall down as reported by someone. That one is Ring Around the Rosies, pocket full of posies, ashes, ashes, all fall down. London Bridge is two people join their hands above their heads and others march through, at the end of the song, whoever is passing through gets caught. It goes: London Bridge is falling down, falling down, falling down, London Bridge is falling down, my fair lady. There are other verses, but I can' remember the rest.
