    3. Texas was not part of the United States in 1840 -- It was still and independent Republic. Thus, there are no US census records for Texas in 1840. Your best bet would be to search land grants and land records. I don't know if the Republic of Texas conducted a census during its existence. Perhaps someone else on the list may know.     3. Dorothy, This family is listed in the 1850 census. Since they came in 1839 the first record of census in 1835 does not include them.
