Perhaps this is the information you need rather than the San Augustine Co. book which does not have a Jimerson listed.
Both of these recommendations are great. You can get the "Gunsmoke ..." book on the net from Amazon.com and the cemetery books were available from the San Augustine Library at one time. The information consolidated in the 3 volumes of the cemetery books provides parentage and spouses of the buried. If you need a look-up I will be happy to help you. Faye, The books sound like exactly what I wanted to read, and hope to gain an appreciation for what it took to live in San Augustine in those early days. I was born about 100 years after my ancestors there and enjoy the benefits of a legal system that is in place that keeps us from shooting each other (sometimes). On the other hand, we still have a lot of work to do in our policing system to keep us safe. It is not perfect either. Sure wish I could help you on this, but these names have never shown up on my research of the Stanleys. I have traced my San Augustine County Stanley family back to Stephen Jefferson Stanley, Sr., b. 1784 in South Carolina. This is not to say that your Stanley/Thornton relatives were not in San Augustine County. Good luck in your search. ----- Original Message ----- From: <matkins106@aol.com> To: <TXSANAUG-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, July 11, 2002 9:07 AM Subject: [TXSANAUG] stanley/thornton > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/ElB.2ACE/557 > > Message Board Post: > > looking for information on Charlie Stanley married to Lizzie Thornton. their children were Troge Stanley b. 1894, Lewis Stanley , Lennard Stanley, Della, and Beatrice. thanks. > > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1 237 > >
Patricia, You may want to check out the book "Gunsmoke in the Redlands" by Joe F. Combs. It was published by The Naylor Company in San Antonio, Texas, in 1968. Also, Joseph Combs wrote "Legends of the Pineys", which might be of interest to those looking for tales from the San Augustine region. Our own Bob Bowman of Angelina County has written and published several books about the people, places, and events of East Texas. One or two of his books deal with old tales of bad lands. As for cemetery records, I found a book in the San Augustine County Clerk's office that is entitled "Caucasian Cemeteries of San Augustine County, Texas. This was put together by people I know to be very knowledgable of the history of these cemeteries. They have traced information from every little crook and cranny in San Augustine County, and there are many of those which explains why so many "unsavory" characters came to SA to make it the land that it is. Being from that county, I consider these people to have been the "salt of the earth" people. Good luck. Hopefully, you will hear from some of those family memebers. Broaddus is inundated with families that you names, especially in the lower part of San Augustine County, closer to Sam Rayburn Lake. Also, you might try looking in the Cemetery Records of Caucasian Cemeteries of San Augustine County. I have found this to be most accurate. Hopefully your closest genealogy research center will have a copy; if not, you can go through the one in the County Clerk's office in the San Augustine County Courthouse, should you be in that area. Good luck. ----- Original Message ----- From: <janicenorman65@hotmail.com> To: <TXSANAUG-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, July 11, 2002 1:48 AM Subject: [TXSANAUG] Sherman Williams > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: Williams, Hudson, Worden, Lucas, Townsend, Hopson, Dickerson, Dixon, Thompson, Sanford and Singleton > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ElB.2ACE/556 > > Message Board Post: > > Looking for Sherman Williams, born July 04, 1964 and died January 31, 1903. I saw a listing under "Cemeteries in San Augustine Co."--Magnolia. Family says my unknown Welch was killed at Magnolia (1863-bef 1870) The widow and two Welch children settled in San Augustine Co. Can anyone tell me anything about the cemetery? Is it very old and is there a list available of who is buried there? Also I have started research on my families in San Augustine Co and am finding a lot of killings and shootings in the area. Has anyone compiled a book on the notorious people of the area from abt 1835-70.The people seem to be toteing guns and shoot to settle things. There has to be a good story here about how and when the area became "civilized". Below is listed a 1860 Caddo Parish Jail Population!--I would imagine some of San Augustine might have relatives that were visiting there. Since I can't find my WELCH--I wonder if he was in the Caddo Parish Prison. I would like to hear from any of you that have stories about shootings and killings in San Augustine up to about 1880--and if you know of any of these people in the Caddo Prison. I have quite a few ancestors that came to Rusk, Panola, San Augustine and the nearby vicinity to be able to have land, but not the restrictions that the Government was "inflicting" at the time. Could be that almost everyone was notorious. The Mexican government wanted fighters who could oppose the Indians. They looked for 1812 veterans, the harder the better.

Also do you know the Bodine website that would have the Bodine info on the John Joseph Saunders family? Dear Researchers, In 1850 there are about four Saunders/Sanders families, which I would like to find how they are related. There may be more Sanders related women on the census under their husband's names. Both John Joseph Saunders and Charity Sanders were in Texas about the same time buying land in the Republic of Texas. I believe it is very possible the John Joseph Saunders was a brother to Charity Sanders husband, who had died by abt 1838. Millie Sanders husband could also be a brother. So we have two Sanders widows here buying land, with a likely brother-in-law. Does anyone know if the papers that widows had to fill out asked the name of their husbands? Or if they had to present some proof of being a widow and intitled to land? First Family: John Joseph Saunders(1798 Va) and Sarah Rowe(1798 N.C.), ...............dau of Joseph Rowe of Petersburg Va. and Nancy Ann ...............Murrow of Amelia Va. Their first two children born ...............1821-1825 in North Carolina; their next born 1825-35 ...............in South Carolina. ...............J. Hi, I'd love to have a copy of the Rowe line--there are probably other connections there that would help. I'll let you know what I find on the Sanders line. There must be brothers and sisters of John Joseph Sanders. Pat >From: ViniL@aol.com >Reply-To: TXSANAUG-L@rootsweb.com >To: TXSANAUG-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [TXSANAUG] John J. Sarah P. Rowe, is the same as Sally Rowe. She was born 10/18/1798, NC, died 9/16/1863, where unk. Daughter of Joseph Rowe, 11/19/1770, of Petersburg, Va. and Nancy Ann Murrow, b. 1/25/1775 Amelia, Va. d. 9/16/1863 (hope this is not an error in the record, but I noticed that it is the same date as her daughter's death). He was the son of Robert Rowe, Abt 1740, England, and Elizabeth Wallace, other data unk.
You can look at David Bodine's online genealogy of the Bodines for more extensive information on that side of your family.
Hi Thank you for writing. You are right--it is the 1860 census not the 1870. I had forgotten that I had the 1860 census disk in, not the 1870. I did not question that I made the mistake, since I have run into the situation before where the ages were off quite a bit from one census to the other--but this time I was wrong. Ineed to compile what you have on the John Joseph Saunders and Sally R. Rowe family in San Augustine. There are 3 sets of Saunders/Sanders there in 1850 from S.C./N.C.--you'd wonder if there is not a relationship somewhere. The only way to find out is to trace them all. First Set-- John Joseph Saunders Family Second Set -- Charity Sanders Family (abt 1790), husband unknown ...children Eliza m. Samuel Pearce aka Hereford ...son - John Sanders m 1)Elizabeth Thomas 2)Amelia Ainsworth Third Set - Millie Sanders 37 (husband unknown) with children Mary, Elizabeth, Harriet, Samuel Ezekiel, Andrew Elvira, Virginia. Would really appreciate the info you have on John J. Saunder's parents and as far back as you have. Maybe we can find a link in this way. Will be glad to share what I have and work with you as we go along. Pat Welch >From: ViniL@aol.com >Reply-To: TXSANAUG-L@rootsweb.com >To: TXSANAUG-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [TXSANAUG] John J.
