    1. [TXSABINE-L] Re: Looking for a book on Brookeland, Sabine Co.
    2. JasLCooper
    3. Thanks to those kind folks that sent me suggestions on finding "Spicey Ridge and Bear Creek Beat" by T. O. Bell. It is not a book that would be in Amazon, or any of the book stores on the net, however. (I've tried.) It is a privately published book, in 1995 by the author. His phone number (printed in the book) has now been assigned to someone else, so he has either passed away or moved. He lived in Longview, I believe, in 1995 when the book was published. I suspect this book may be carried in a local area bookshop. I live in Austin, so I can't hop over very easy to look for it. I recall there is a local history shop in the old jail in Hemphill, but I don't have the phone number or even the name of the shop. If anyone could look it up and post it to me, I'd appreciate it greatly. I'm not sure I have the title correct, but it is close. This book has a lot of pictures of Brookeland, Sabine County, etc. and enumerates the census list for several censuses for that precinct of Sabine County. It also has a lot of local history and tales in it. Any help would be appreciated. I have looked on the www, but without success. Thanks, Jim Cooper Austin, Texas jaslcooper@aol.com

    1. [TXSABINE-L] Looking for Speights kin
    2. Sharon Speights Varnes
    3. Hi Sabine County, Texas! My line is in the Hemphill area. I hope to get to know more kin thru e-mail. I am fortunate to have had a wonderful aunt - Virgie Lousie Collier Speights married to my uncle, Drayton Bennett Speights - whose loose papers, copied by my aunt Anna Mignon Speights Crouch, that got me started in genealogy. Still have lots of close kin leaving in Hemphill but living in Florida makes it hard to keep in touch. Hope this will help me keep contact with them and in my daddy's roots. Take care, Sharon Kay Speights Varnes

    1. [TXSABINE-L] Looking for WILSON Ancestors/Relatives
    2. Thel Curtis
    3. Dear Maura, I noticed your reference about your Ggrandfather, Andrew WILSON. Tell me more about him. Date/place of birth...parents, emigration date...etc. Was Andrew his first or middle name? I know you haven't asked for my information, but I'd like for you to take a look at it...PLEASE... and see if you can fill in any blanks for me. Perhaps you might recognize someone in the two sides of my WILSON families. I have WILSON ancestors on both sides of my family. On my Father's side, whose surname is ALEXANDER, I have been able to trace back to his Mother's GGGgrandfather, Robert WILSON, born abt 1760+. He married Nancy (Agnes) OLIVER, daughter of John OLIVER. I have not been able to go farther back that Robert WILSON. I do not know where Robert was born, who his Father or Mother was, or where his parents were from. Any information will gladly be received. Robert and Nancy (Agnes) Oliver WILSON had about 10-11 children together, one of whom was my GGGgrandfather, Francis WILSON, born in VA in 1790. He married Elizabeth KOUNTZ, born in 1795 in VA. Francis WILSON, Sr., became a Methodist circuit riding preacher and moved to Ohio in abt. 1827, then to Shelby Co., TX on 19 Oct., 1839. He was issued a Conditional Certificate, Class 3 Land Grant, for 640 acres, on 24 Dec., 1839, in San Augustine County, TX. He was issued an Unconditional Certificate in San Augustine County, TX. on 8 Mar., 1847. He moved to Newton Co., TX in 1848-50. He died on 2 Oct, 1867. Francis, Sr. and Elizabeth KOUNTZ WILSON had ten sons. Only five reached manhood, one of whom was my GGgrandfather, second born son (2) Francis (Frank) WILSON, Jr. The other sons were: (1) Morgan, who was a cripple and a tailor by profession. Morgan married Sarah MARTIN at San Augustine. He died in Orange, TX. after the close of the Civil War; (3) Henry F. - married Martha STEWART - and lived at Belgrade. He was a farmer, merchant, Justice of the Peace, and County Commissioner; (4) Asbury - born in OH, 1832 - married Elizabeth STEWART - He died in Farrsville, (?) in 1888; and (5) William, married Mrs. Nancy STEWART BEVIL (daughter of A. L. STEWART and sister to Elizabeth STEWART WILSON, wife of Asbury). My GGgrandfather, Francis (Frank) WILSON, Jr. was born in VA in 1824. He married wife #1 Harriet BROWN, of Louisiana, on 15 Aug., 1843 in San Augustine, TX. They had eight children: (1) Francis M. (2) Edward H. (3) Elizabeth L.; ** My Grandmother: (4) Margaret A. - born Apr., 1853 or (1855?) in Polk Co., TX - married Stephen Moses OATES on 8 Aug., 1873 in Polk Co., TX. (or Olive Corrine - Corena?) - married Charles Spencer OATES on 16 Dec., 1875 in Polk Co., TX; (6) William A. - born abt 1859; (7) Frances V. - born abt 1862; and (8) Mary E. WILSON - born abt 1865 - married William Henderson OATES on 11 Feb., 1887 in Polk Co., TX. (Three WILSON sisters married three OATES brothers). Francis (Frank) WILSON, Jr. was a private in Company C, 11th (Spaight's) Battalion, Texas Volunteers. He also became a Methodist minister. After his first wife, Harriet Brown, died, he married a second wife: Mrs. Elizabeth (Betty) HORGER ALSTON, widow of Dr. John Alston. In about 1848-50 he moved to Newton Co., TX. with his Father, Rev. Francis Wilson, Sr. After the Civil War, he moved to Polk County, TX. On 8 Aug., 1873, Margaret A. WILSON (the fourth child of Francis (Frank) WILSON, Jr. and Harriet Brown WILSON), married Stephen Moses OATES in Polk Co., TX. Together they had seven children, one of whom was my Grandmother, Minnie Lee OATES, born 13 July, 1889. My Grandmother, Minnie Lee OATES, married John Elijah "Lige" ALEXANDER, in Polk Co., TX in about 1906. They had seven children, one of whom is my Father, Roger Harris ALEXANDER, who is still living.
