I just received my Genealogy Bulletin from Heritage Quest and thought I would pass this little tid bit along for all to see. We all know Texas became a state in 1845 so the first federal census was in 1850 right? Wrong There was Miller County Arkansas Territory enumerated in 1820 and again in 1830 which was within an area that is now part of North Eastern Texas. The 1820 census was taken for people living on both the north and south sides of the Red River, all within Texas and part of present day Oklahoma. The main settlement there was Pecan Point. In 1828, congress established the line between present day Arkansas and Oklahoma as the Eastern boundary of the Indian Territory. At that time any white settlers north of the Red River were removed to areas south of the River. By the time of the 1830 census several thousand people were living just south of the Red River and completely within the present state of Texas.... but they thought they were in Miller County, Arkansas Territory. It was not until 1841 that a new survey revealed the error and the treaty line between Texas and Louisiana and Texas and Arkansas was marked properly on the ground. The area of present day Miller County, Arkansas has only a small 4 to 5 mile wide stripe of land that was in the original area of old Miller Co.. Texas also had a Greer Co. till Oklahoma took it away from them. It functioned as a county for ten years with representatives to Austin. but in 1890 the government refused to acknowledge Greer Co. thus putting Greer Co. in Oklahoma. For the period 1886-1896 people living in Greer Co., Texas/Oklahoma may have left marks in both states. I thought this might be of interest to those of us doing research in Texas. Well Hello Sabine County - glad to have found you. I am desperately trying to find out what KY county my William C. PHILLIPS was born in. I am hoping if someone has access to marriage records it might say the city at least. He was b 1824. His father was born abt 1800 in KY and his mother was a Miss Harrison of VA. Unknown if his parents marr in VA or KY. He married Eliza Jane Smith abt 1845 in Sabine. Eliza was b in 1825 Lawrence Co., Miss and d abt 1861 in TX. She was the dau of Eli N. Smith and Rachel Slaughter (also of Sabine). She died and he later m Amanda SMITH. Far as I know an unrelated SMITH. This may tie into George W. SMITH below that marr. a dau of Eliza's - Sarah Jane PHILLIPS (George was b abt 1841 in Missouri) William C. PHILLIPS was buried in 1892 at Cedar Valley Cemetary, Bell Co, TX and I have had no success in locating that either. I found in a GLO search a Cedar Valley Church in Lancaster, Dallas County and a Cedar Valley Cemetary in Bell County but what city? HELP William C and Eliza had 8 children. The first two born in Sabine, Mary Jane born 1844 and John H. born 1848 d 1860. A genealogy type letter by my grandma says, "He didn't fight in the civil war. He stayed home to protect the frontier. He was a Texas Ranger and knew how to graft fruit trees. They settled near Brownwood, Texas and he and several other family members died there". (I know Brownwood is in Brown Co) Also, there was a lot of talk about Marble Falls - which I think is in Burnet Co. ARE BROWN, BURNET AND BELL COUNTIES CLOSE TO EACH OTHER? My info is that Bell Co was created from Milam Co in 1/22/1850 . He an family appear on 1850 Panola Co census page 453, HH129. His next 3 children were born in Liberty, Panola Co He an family appear on 1860 Burnet Co census his last 3 kids born in Llano, Burnet Here's the rest of my info Mary Jane - b 1844 - don't know husband John H. b 1848 d 1860 Hugh H b Mar 1, 1850 d abt 1870 m Miss Atwood James Slaughter Phillips b Mar 1, 1850 (twin to above) m Mary Catherine KING Mahala M. b Dec 1850 - don't know husband Sarah Jane b 1853 d abt 1867 m George W. Smith (he re-marr Martha Davidson) Elizabeth b 1855 - don't know husband Manerva Emmaline b Jul 1860 d ? m David Andrews Eudaley Please, if anyone can help with a birth record of Mary Jane or John H., or a marriage records of William C and Eliza. Or perhaps a lead on an obit or will of William C. anything that can place William C SOMEWHERE SPECIFIC in KY. This is my brick wall. Please forgive the length of this query, but I wanted to arm anybody willing to help with all the info I have. Teena Phillips Roselane@aol.com

Hello Bob, Although I don't have a connection to your line. Just a note about names. Many names are shortened, sometimes to what seems a strange variation. When checking records check both given and nick- names. Alonzo to Lonnie is understandable, some others that you may encounter: Mary = Polly/Mollie Sarah = Sallie Martha = Patsy/Mattie William = Bill/Will Amanda = Mandy/ie Lettice = Letty/ie Lucinda = Lucy Nancy = Nanny/ie Frances = Fannie Margaret = Maggie Josephine = Josie Elizabeth = Eliza/Betsy/Lizzie/Betty/Bessie Cheryl

Hello! I am looking for information on an Ebenezer Barnes who was living in Sabine County in 1860 and 1870 (according to census records). He was said to have died in 1877. I am especially interested in information on his son Henry Clay Barnes. I would very much appreciate any help that anyone can offer. Thanks! Debbie
Karen, We are cousins! I am also a descendant of Joseph Thomas Fuller and Viola Fullen, through their daughter Nina Fuller who married Vessie McLemore. I have quite a bit of information I have gathered on both the Fuller and Fullen families with the help of my family, Blanche Toole of Sabine County, and several very nice people here on the board. If you email me your address, I will send you a packet ASAP. Relatively yours, Melinda McLemore Strong Karen Mott wrote: > I am looking for information about my Fuller family.
