3. I believe it is the Antioch Baptist Church you are thinking of. I too remember the plaque. The cemetery there is called Gravel Hill. It is not in Hemphill but about 1/2 way between Hemphill and Rosevine on 1592. I also have a WHITE connection but not much info - can anyone out there help? Gram Berry FERGUSON (1849 - 1923) m. 3. Some of my ancestors in the White and Strickland family were founders of a Baptist Church in Hemphill, Texas in the late 1850s. The minutes were transcribed and published as MINUTES OF THE FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF HEMPHILL, TEXAS by Di Ann Vick (I believe) and are available for purchase through Ericson Books. I remember from visiting Sabine County when I was little that the church location had moved, the name had changed, but that there was still an operating church. I think it was the Antioch Baptist Church, but don't remember. The church I remember had a plaque near the entrance with the name of the 11 or 12 founding members. Can anyone help me with this? 1. [TXSABINE-L] Wright
2. I am trying to find where my GGGGrandfather is buried. If anyone in Sabine County, Tx happen to find his grave marker I would appreciate it very much if you would let me know. Below is where we find him on the Sabine Census. A. John Sr. also had a son A. John Wright Jr. that I can't find. I walked the big cemetery at Rosevine but I would guess there are more then that one. A. John Wright, Sr. [what the initial "A" stands for is unknown at the present, but it is probably Andrew]. According to the 1850 Troup County, Georgia Census. John Wright was a 41 year old shoemaker. His wife's name is unknown at this time, although a Sarah Wright, age 28, was listed in his household. Lloyd [Thomas] Wright, listed as 8 above, was included in the census as age 14. The Wrights listed here were close neighbors of the Hill Family where Rosa Jane Streeter was staying at the time. An A. J. Wright, Sr. was listed as living with Lloyd Thomas and Rosa Jane Streeter on the 1870 Sabine County, Texas census. He listed his age as 60 and the state of his birth as Alabama. 1835 Sabine County Cenus Wright`s Thomas 33 Mary 31 Martha 11 Muhulda 7 Jacob J. 5 Mancy 4 Marion (s) 2 Again I will appreciate ang help. If you happen to have any of my Wright's you might want to check out my home page for more information and if you have anything that I don't please share it with me Carnell CARNE LL'S FTM Home page

3. Greetings to all, If you had ancestors who ever lived in Pike Co., AL, we hope you will submit information about them to the Pike Co. Heritage book project. There is no cost to submit information about your ancestors for inclusion in this book. This is the biggest genealogy project Pike Co., AL has ever undertaken, under Heritage Publishing Company, & we know that many, many families from Pike County moved to Texas last century. Some left signs in their yards saying "GTT" & all their neighbors knew they had "Gone to Texas." For further information about this project, please e-mail me at orion@p-c-net.net. If you had ancestors in Pike Co., AL, please let them be included in this book! If you have infor- mation but don't want to write it yourself, please let us know & someone can do the writing for you. Thank you very much. -- Dorothy Ann Folmar Pike Co., AL

2. Melinda Strong
3. I am looking for the parents of John/James? Fullen who settled with his wife, Rebecca Baldwin, in Sabine County TX circa 1843. They had three sons, John, William and Samuel?. J. Fullen died prior to 1850 (per the census). Rebecca later remarried Solomon Causey. The 1850 census shows John and Rebecca were both born in PA. However, it was the understanding of their sons they were from TN and NC respectively. Maybe they were born in PA, and their families migrated early to TN and NC. Thanks Melinda McLemore Strong

1. [TXSABINE-L] H.S. White/Sabine Co Judge 1869-1875
2. Melinda M. Strong
3. My great-great grandfather was Henry Strickland White Sr. (born ca 1812 Al or Ga or Miss, died 1886 in Sabine County, TX, buried Gravel Hill Cemetery). The book SABINE COUNTY HISTORICAL SKETCHES AND GENEALOGICAL RECORDS by White and Toole says that "Edward White and Elizabeth Strickland White were the parents of Henry Strickland White who was JUDGE OF SABINE COUNTY from 1869-1875, serving with Solomon Arthur. (They were called Chief Magistrates until the new State Constitution went into effect at the end of their term). Henry S. White was also a member of the Littleton Fowler Masonic Lodge in Sabine County, and since the White plantation lay just west of Hemphill, he was the last of the "paderos" for the return of run-a-way slaves in the county." I have some questions that I hope someone with a better background can help me with. 1) In his book SABINE COUNTY TEXAS THE FIRST ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY YEARS (1836-1986), Robert Cecil McDaniel states that "the office (of County Judge) was abolished by the Constituion of 1869, but was reestablished by the Constituion of 1876" and he goes on to list all the county judges, and no one is listed for the period of 1869-1875. He does not mention the office of Chief Magistrate. Does anyone know anything about that office, and how I could confirm or deny that HS White served in that capacity. If he served, would this have been an office appointed by the provisional governor after the end of the Civil War? 2) I don't find any CSA service records for him, and I assume that as he was about 50 at the time of the outbreak of the war this would not be unusual, or would it? Did even older men enlist in some sort of home guard? 3) What does "paderos" mean? (I have a feeling that I am not going to like the defination, based on the context in which it was used. Thanks for any suggestion or advice. Melinda McLemore Strong P.S. I am a descendant of HS White by his third wife, Mary Etta "Polly" Vardeman.

There is also a complete index for my book, Sabine Parish 1850 Census With Added Family Information and an example of an entry of the book. Just type in butteinalaska.com as the web address That should get you to the site. The rest should be easy to follow. Alot of work yet to be done but at least the census records are up. Kathy
