Kay, Thanks so much for this info. I had originally thought that this was the same church as the First Baptist Church of Hemphill founded ca 1868, but it appears I am wrong. There are some similar members, notably my 2nd great grandparents H.S. White and Mary E. White. Sophie Wallace is a daughter (I think without first looking at my files) or Mary E. White by her first marriage. The other's listed are not the same as the 11 founding members of the First Baptist Church of Hemphill as listed in the minutes. I guess they broke off from the First Baptist Church to become members of this one instead. Interesting. Do you know if the minute books of this particular church have been preserved, or even transcribed, as were the minutes of the First Baptist Church? Do you know if the First Baptist Church, or a successor is still around? Dear All, I sent the following to the list via my Hotmail account on Sept. 2, but apparently it never arrrived! I've had so many computer problems lately, I'm behind, so if you've asked me to do something for you, please be patient. So, I'm sending it via another account to try again. Thanks, Kay ***************************************************** Walter, Francis Marcus Weatherred, Jr. and his wife are buried in my back yard! Actually, in the Milam Cemetery behind my house. They have a large monument between their individual markers. This is what it says: Francis Marcus Weatherred Came to Texas in 1835 Born in Albermarle County, Virginia July 15, 1781 Soldier in the Creek Indian War and the Texas War for Independence, 1836 Died December 4, 1854 His Wife Nancy Dowell Weatherred Born in Virginia 1791 Died in Sabine County, Texas 1864 Erected by the State of Texas 1962 *************** Both have footmarkers shaped like the state of TX with the Citizen of Republic of Texas Seal. Their headmarkers are: Nancy Ann Dowell Weatherred 1791 - 1864 Francis Marcus Weatherred 1781 - 1854 ******************* I don't know a Weatherred researcher right now, but I'll be on the lookout for one. Our county historian told me a while back that there was a big service for the dedication of the marker in 1962 and a bunch of descendents from around Dallas came to the ceremony. If I can be of any assistance, let me know. Kay Kay Parker McCary, Milam, Sabine Co., TX http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/m/c/c/Kay-P-McCary/index.html
In the index of the book MINUTES 1858-1890 FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH HEMPHILL, TEXAS, there are three Weatherred's listed: Ida, James P, and William W. Hey All, Just got this message from another list and it's really a neat idea. Pull up my father's name, Elliott Pepper and see the note I posted; then my mother's name Vidala Pepper and check her out. Looks like I am going to be really busy, another project! :-) You all take care, Yolanda Check out the SSDI data available from Rootsweb. It's updated info and includes the Post-Em feature described in the following message: POST-EMS. Now you can attach a message to any of the more than 61 million records in the Social Security Death Index (SSDI) at Rootsweb by using a "post-em," developed by RootsWeb's own Randy Winch. Some suggested uses: attach notes to the records of your relatives, providing researchers with a direct link to you; add background information on an individual in the database, such as pointers to other records relating to that individual; or add a correction to an incorrect record. Check the records of individuals of interest to you often. Someone recently might have left a note there for you. To add a note to a record, do a search and click on "Post-em" at the end of a record at: http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi.
It was the first day of census, and all through the land; The pollster was ready ... a black book in hand. He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride; His book and some quills were tucked close by his side. A long winding ride down a road barely there; Toward the smell of fresh bread wafting, up through the air. The woman was tired, with lines on her face; And wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place. She gave him some water ... as they sat at the table; And she answered his questions ... the best she was able. He asked of her children... Yes, she had quite a few; The oldest was twenty, the youngest not two. She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red; his sister, she whispered, was napping in bed. She noted each person who lived there with pride; And she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. He noted the sex, the color, the age... The marks from the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children, she nodded her head; And saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead. The places of birth she "never forgot"; Was it Kansas? or Utah? or Oregon ... or not? They came from Scotland, of that she was clear; But she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here. They spoke of employment, of schooling and such; They could read some .and write some .. though really not much. When the questions were answered, his job there was done; So he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun. We can almost imagine his voice loud and clear; "May God bless you all for another ten years." Now picture a time warp ... its' now you and me; As we search for the people on our family tree. We squint at the census and scroll down so slow; As we search for that entry from long, long ago. Could they only imagine on that long ago day; That the entries they made would effect us this way? If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel; And the searching that makes them so increasingly real. We can hear if we listen the words they impart; Through their blood in our veins and their voice in our heart. Thanks, Melinda, for posting the records from your book on the Baptist Church in Hemphill. Although my family probably did not attend that church, I am exceedingly interested in these historical records -- they give us a glimpse of the society that produced them. Does anyone know anything about the Little Flock Church? A couple of months ago, I visited the graves of my grandparents (and other family members) who are buried at the Little Flock Cemetery. It is possible that my family attended that church since they are buried there and I would like to know more about the history of the church. I might mention that this was my first trip to Sabine County. My mother died when I was a baby and I learned very little about my maternal family while I was growing up. Now, in my old age :-), being afflicted with the genealogical bug, I would really like to know more about my family and the other people in their lives. Wow, that was a long-winded "thank you"! Best regards, Pat Landwehr Researching CLEGG, WILLIAMS in Sabine, San Augustine, and Tyler Counties.
