    1. [TXSABINE-L] Settler's Day in Milam, Texas
    2. Walter McLendon
    3. My wife and I plan to attend Settler's Day on Saturday, the 20th. Are any of you coming? I would like to meet and exchange notes on any descendants of the WEATHERRED's. This includes LAIRD, NORFORD, BROWN, OLIPHANT, DYE, LAWHON and WILLIAMS. These are surnames local to Milam, who married a WEATHERRED. I have found at least 5 Weatherred's who died in Sabine County that I have not found their burial places. My Frances Marcus WEATHERRED and Nancy Ann DOWELL are buried in Milam Cemetery, close to the festivities. Please respond so that we can find an easy way to meet. Thanks! 3. THERE IS STILL TIME TO REGISTER AND ATTEND THIS SEMINAR! Walk-ins welcome before 9:00 am. There are plenty of seats left. I want to remind everybody on the lists for Angelina County, Texas, and its neighboring counties about the upcoming VIRGINIA RESEARCH SEMINAR at Angelina College, in Lufkin, Texas, on Saturday, October 16, 1999. Unless all your ancestors came late enough for Ellis Island (1892), if you get back far enough in your research just about everybody has somebody who came through Virginia. Vendors are welcome. Call ahead for space. Speaker will be the well known Mary McCampbell Bell of Arlington, Virginia. Price is $45.00 which includes continental breakfast, and break snacks, and a salad and sandwich buffett lunch in the college cafeteria. She is an excellent nationally known speaker and it cost to get her to East Texas from Virginia. She will present four one hour and 15 minutes sessions on Migrations out of early Virginia to other regions and the use of Virginia records including deeds and patents, probate records and court order books and tax records with very informative and detailed handouts. Program begins at 9:00 a.m. In my other genealogy life, I teach genealogy and organize these special genealogy events at Angelina College in Lufkin, Texas, a two year community college 100 miles or a two hour drive north up Hwy 59 from Houston, Texas. While a lot of colleges are teaching continuing education/hobby courses in genealogy now, Angelina College is the only college in Texas that we know about and probably the only one between Alabama and Utah that is bringing in special speakers for fall and spring seminars and holding a three day summer conference. The dates for next summer's conference are Thurs-Sat, July 27-29. Theme is expected to be Researching the mid-1800's, the Civil War Era, if I can get enough speakers on that topic and maybe some re-enactors together. If you would like to be on the mailing list please let us know. If we do not have a good turnouts for these programs, college could decide not to sponsor them anymore. I have some areas well covered and almost nobody in some of the adjoining counties where there are apparently no local genealogy societies. Dates for the spring seminar are Friday, March 31, and Saturday, April 1, 2000. Speaker will be Rhonda R. McClure of Florida with a variety of topics. Some speakers will speak on Friday night and some will only speak on Saturday. Mrs. McClure will speak on Friday night; Mrs Bell does not. Mrs. McClure's Friday night topics will be Organization and migrations. Saturday topics will be one session on New England research and three sessions on using computers and the internet. For more information Contact: Community Services, Angelina College, P. O Box 1768, Lufkin, Texas, 75902-1768 1-409-633-5206. The name of the lady who does registration is Susan. e-mail fkanke@angelina.cc.tx.us fax is 1-409-639-3863 Seats are still available. Walk-ins are welcome on a space available basis the morning of the seminar. You can register the morning of the conference, but it is best to call ahead so that you will have a lunch reservation. Late Registration is from 8-8:45 am with the program beginning at 9 am. with a one hour break for lunch, 12-1. If you are interested in speaking at a future conference, send a resume and a list of topics with summaries on which you speak. Speakers are by inviation. Let us hear from you if you have suggestions for future speakers or topics. We need a good turnout for these events or college could decide not to sponsor them in the future. 3. Dear All, I just wanted to add a few tidbits and haven't had time. The Directions to the Bickley cemetery just need one more thing, you go west about 9 miles from Milam before you reach the FM 3448, or that would be about 11 miles east of San Augustine. Now just a little about the courthouse. The restoration of the courthouse was begun in 1998. A special seal with a historical design is located on the second floor. This emblem covers 6 ft. in diameter and starts with one 2 inch red ring, followed by the wording, "State of Texas, 1837, Sabine County". The complete seal includes 254 pieces of tile which represent the 254 counties in the state; Texas was the 28th State admitted and is defined by 28 tiles within the white star; 23 small blue stars hightlight Sabine County as one of the 23 Original Counties. The restoration was complete a few months ago and now the courthouse looks beautiful. On the corners of the courthouse lawn and beside the four entrances to the lawn have been placed old fashoned lights posts with white Globes. I am glad to report the Sabine Co. Jail Museum and Virgie Speights Memorial Library is open Wednesday through Saturday from 9 am til 2 pm. They also have a phone (409) 787-4757. Gracie Smith is there each day. Mrs. Blance Toole continues to come several days a week. Although she had surgery a few weeks ago and hasn't been going since then. She is a remarkable lady and I love visiting with her. Also they have a new computer and have purchased Family Tree Maker. We are hoping later to collect more family info from researchers to put on the computer or to put into files in the library. I will probably be the one to undertake this task, so I'll let you know how this progresses and when we will need your input. Also, the computer will be going online. 2. Charles & Nancy Royall
    3. Hello list members. I am new to this list (10/5/99) and have not posted anything to it. My name is Charles C. Royall, San Angelo TX. I am descended from Angus Nicholson McLeod b Dec 6, 1849, Hemphill, Sabine Co. TX m Sarah Ella Little in Cooper TX. Angus is my ggrandfather and he raised my mother. His father was John Alexander McLeod m Susanna Youngblood Dec 15, 1841 Caddo Parish LA. They moved to Hemphill, according to Poll Tax Records in 1846. Some of the lines connected to this family are: Peace, Toole, Little, Sonscrant, Brown, Stephens, McCook, Schnell, Smart, Hendrick, Gracey, Collins, Harvey, and dozens more. Some are yet undiscovered. A local resident that is kin was/is Blanche Toole, a local historian in Sabine County. I do not know if she is still living. I have not heard from her in over 15 years. I know that there are probably many persons descended from my lines still residing in the local area. If you are one or, if you are doing research on these families, I would be delighted to hear from you. I have been working on it for 30 years and it has been a difficult search. Would like to bring it up to modern times. That can be done only with information from living persons, as you are aware information has to be 75 years old before making it available to the public. I have hundreds of pages of information and thousands of names to share even with it being incomplete. Sarah Youngblood deeded her land in Hemphill to her grandson James T. Peace on the day of her death, 4 June 1889. I am very intrested in marriage and death records of Sabine Co. Church records, anything and everything pertaining to Sabine County, on all of the related lines. Oral histories are also very valuable to me. Anyone is welcome to my information and may use it in any way they see fit, after all, I recived it from public records, even though it consumed thousands of hours on my part. I would like for all of these families to be remembered after I am gone. There is no one in my family to continue my work, or at least, no one that cares enough to continue it. I have become "the older generation." Thank You Charlie Royall 2063 Putter Dr San Angelo, TX 76904 Ph 915-944-0469

    3. I had a request from someone wanting to know the location of Bickley Cemetery and also wanted me to list the Williams' buried there. These are the directions that Kay Parker McCary was kind enough to give me and they worked perfectly! From Hwy 21, you turn on FM 3448 and go 1.9 mi. (It only goes north.) The road makes a hard right there and there is a small dirt road that goes left there. Follow it a little ways to the cemetery. It has a cyclone fence, but no sign. I don't think there were any burials since about 1957 or so. There were less than 100 graves. It's not very big. There are 2 bricked up graves that my brother in law was told are David Renfroe and his wife. Kay Parker McCary Williams and Bragg are the name I am researching in Sabine Co. Here is the list of my Williams family buried at Bickley: Cynthia Williams b. 1815 d. 1910 (wife of David Williams) David Williams b. 1807 d. 1889 John Thomas Williams b. July 7 1866 d.
