Posted on: Sabine Co. Tx Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/Sabine?read=228 Surname: Knighton, Grace ------------------------- I'm looking for information on the family of Neptune (Nep) and Gustunn Grace of Robertson Bend and Hemphill, Sabine County/Newton County, Texas. Nep was from Conecuh County, Alabama, where he married his first wife, Sally Stallsworth. Their children were William Robert (Rob, who lived to be at least 94 years old; born 25 Dec 1870); Alice; and Emmett (had a son named Timmy Grace). Neptune left Alabama and went to Robertson Bend, by the Sabine River. He was associated with Henry and Allen Robertson/Roberson from Georgia. The Robertsons, who were from Georgia, had a native American cook (Cherokee or probably Seminole) named Gustavia/Gustavier. Her daughter, Gustunn, became Neptune's second wife. Neptune was a dentist, a ferry operator, and worked in the McDaniel gin. He also worked on the steamboat, the Maude Howell. Their children were Minte, Zed, Pascal, Henry, Jesse, and Mirty. Neptune's son, Rob(ert) Grace left Alabama as well and settled at the Bend. He married Martha Simmons; they had four children. After Martha's death, he married Annie Gordon. Minte Grace married Don "John" Knighton of Cedar Grove and Hemphill, Texas (born 1 Jan 1887; son of Jerry Knighton and Samantha Simmons). They had 13 children. I would love to share information and research about this family, Robertsons Bend, or a teacher named Barfield.

Please, Would anyone have information on: JOHN FLOWERS LOWE B. 8 June 1875 Natchez, Adams Co, Miss. D. 26 Jan 1918 Needmore, Tx or his son: JOHN THOMAS LOWE B. 29 May 1913 Sabine or San Augustine Co., Tx D. 13 Feb 1936 Vidor, Orange Co., Tx There seems to be a dead end on J.F. Lowe. He was my grandmother's first husband and left no trail at all. They lived in the Brookeland community. He and his son are buried at the Brookeland Cemetery (it is said) but in unmarked graves. It is also said that he was a doctor. Thanks so much, Debbie
Hello all, I've been researching the Low-Conner feud and have spoken with many family members and was given some help by Mr. McDaniel. I have also read the book by Mr. Coombs about the feud. If anyone has heard any family legends or stories of those days that they are willing to share I would love to correspond with you. I am descended from Ike Low and Melissa Travis. I find the feud fascinating because of how all the families of Sabine County were mixed into it. Cannon Travis had daughters married to the Low's, Conner's and Smith's. I would like to gather as much information as possible on the subject and I am willing to share it with any interested parties. Thanks, Ed Wetterman ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

I just found out that the 1920 Sabine County, Texas Federal Census has been published!! It is 8 1/2 X 11, softbound, 295 pages, with Name Index. It costs $20.00 with $1.35 tax and $2.25 for shipping if desired. You can order from: Robert Cecil McDaniel HC 53, Box 160 Hemphill, TX 75948 Cecil told me tonight that the 1900 census and his last pictorial history book of Sabine County should be out by May. I'll let you know when I find out they are in. Just wanted to let you all know that this is available. If anyone would like to call Cecil, e-mail me for his number. The Sabine County Historical Commission has the 1910 Sabine County Census. If you would like info on that, let me know and I'll find out about that one for you. They have then at the Old Jail and Virgie Speights Library & Museum and are only open Wed thru Sat 9-2. This is great, I'm so excited - Cecil's bringing me mine tomorrow!!! I probably should add that the Palo Gaucho Bayou rises in San Augustine County to the north of us and flows southeast through Sabine County to the Sabine River. Bettye Wagstaff
Many early immigrants entered Texas by way of Gaines Ferry qv on the Old San Antonio Roadqv crossing of the Sabine River. Ferries that played a sufficient part in the life of the republic and the state to be marked by the Texas Centennialqv Commission in 1936 were Burnam's Ferry, Colbert's Ferry, Epperson's Ferry, Groce's Ferry, Lynch's Ferry, Robbins's Ferry, Stephenson's Ferry, and Thompson's Ferry.qqv Ferries had various styles of construction, but perhaps the most common type was a flat raftlike barge onto which a wagon or cart could be driven from the inclined stream banks. These banks were required by the ferry charters to be kept graded by the ferrymen. Many ferrymen stretched a bank-tobank cable for a guide. Fares, which were supposed to be posted, averaged one to two dollars for light and heavy wagons, twentyfive cents for one man and horse, 6¼ to 12½ cents for a man on foot, four to six cents a head for cattle, and lesser amounts for smaller animals. Ferrymen were allowed to raise their fares for crossings at night or in bad weather. In 1850 and 1854 the state legislature passed laws relating to ferries and their responsibility to the community as public conveyors. Hopes this Helps Someone , Evelyn in Texas
Dear list, The Gaines Ferry was the best known, but there were many others in the area as well. The Isaac Low family also ran a ferry across the Sabine river and were noted for doing so constantly during the Runaway Scrape (when Texans were running from Santa Anna's Army). I would also like to know what the going rates where back then for a ferry ride. I doubt it was too expensive.
