    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Wadford, Watford, Hubbard, Haven, Havin Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/AlB.2ACE/521 Message Board Post: I am desperately looking for information regarding my great grandfather, William Henry W(h)adford. My g-grandfather was supposedly born in Alabama on September 15th during the Civil War years and the tale told is that his family may have originally come from the Carolinas to perhaps Newton, Dale County, Alabama, where he may have been born. He was orphaned at a young age when his family may have died in a "plague" possibly on a river(house)boat and the story has it he was discovered alone after a couple of days. He possibly was sent to live with an uncle in Florida, but ran away with cousins when he was a young boy and they ended in Texas with another supposed uncle. I am able to trace him from 1885, Rains County, Texas to Delta County, Colorado where he is buried. The cousins may have been his mothers' family. The first record I can find of him is his marriage to Mary E. Havens on October 25, 1885 in Rains County, Texas where he had worked building Sulpher Springs Road. They had a son, William Henry Whadford Jr. born Oct. 15, 1886 in Sulpher Springs, Hopkins County, Texas and Mary soon died afterwards. My g-grandfather then married Sminthie Ellen Matlock (b. Sept. 4, 1874 Marlin, Falls County, Texas) on Jan. 14, 1889 at Cureo, Dewitt County, Texas. They had six children: Leona Josephine (f) b. Mar. 20, 1890 at Cuero, Dewitt County Bonnie Monroe (m) b. Jan. 15, 1892 at Edna, Jackson County Jessie Winnie (f) b. Sept. 26, 1893 at Edna, Jackson County Maude Belle (f) b. Jun. 26, 1895 at Edna, Jackson County Lillie Mae (f) b. Mar. 5, 1898 at Edna, Jackson County Charles Henry Claude (m) b. Jan. 9, 1902 at Paonia, Delta County, Colorado The found censuses of him are: The 1900 census of Montgomery County, Texas lists: William Henry Whadford, w, m, born-Sept, year-1865 age last birthday is 30 or 39 and he is a logger (possibly in the San Jacinto Range) and his unknown parents were born in Alabama. The census date is June 4th, 1900. The 1910 Delta County, Colorado census lists: William H. Whadford, m, w, age 47 (birthyear? 1863?) and as a survivor (dependent?) of the Civil War and that his father was born in Alabama and his mother was born in Florida. The census date is April 18th, 1910. The 1920 Delta County, Colorado census lists: William H. Whadford, m, w, age 56 (birthyear? 1864) and both his parents were born in North Carolina. The census date is Jan. 24th, 1920. The 1930 Delta County, Colorado census lists: William H. Wadford, m, w, age 66 (birthyear? 1864) and his father was born in South Carolina and his mother was born in Alabama. The census date is April 10th, 1930. Recently, I finally found a census listing a Willie Wadford approximately the same age as my g-grandfather would have been and I'm hoping someone may be able to provide the crack in my brick wall. It is the 1870 census of Shelby County, Hillsboro, P.O., Alabama, page 423. I cannot clearly make out Ms. Wadford's first name and I'm hoping it is recognized. The listings is: Hubbard, James D. age 24, M, W, Farmer b. Alabama. Mollie, age 20, F, W, Keeping house, b. Alabama. Walter R. or B., age 1 , M, W, At Home, b. Alabama. Wadford, ? (possibly Annie or (N)Annie), age 25, F, W, At Home, b. Alabama. Wadford, Willie, age 4, M, W, At Home, b. Alabama. I'm assuming Ms. Wadford is a sister to either James D. or Mollie, but I have found no proof. If you have any information regarding the Wad-Watfords, Havens-ins, Hubbards or recognize this story, please let me know. I would also appreciate any ideas or other contacts. Thank you! Nancy L. Compton

    1. [TX ROBERTSON] GRANT, DAVIS, SHANNON, REASONOVER, LOONEY, FOWLER, GLOVER, WEAVER, WHITEHEAD, BAKER
    2. Allen Grant
    3. Here is a bit of information that I found this morning in some notes given to me by Sid Baker, a distant relative through marriage of his mother to a Grant, whose name appeared in almost every book in the Clayton Genealogy Library in Houston that I was searching for Grant history. I am searching for information about Thomas GRANT and Sarah DAVIS nee GLOVER GRANT. "After the death of Thomas Grant, in the latter part of 1838 in Marshall County, TN, the remaining members of the family decided to remove to areas where their brother and sisters were living. The widow Sarah Grant (who was married to Thomas Grant); James Davis Grant and family; Early Reasonover (who married Lavinia, daughter of Thomas and Sarah Grant) and family; Richard G. Grant and Adaline with Malinda Elizabeth who had been born in Maury County, TN. They arrived in Pontotoc County Mississippi, before the U. S. 1840 Census was taken, as they were in it. It was in Pontotoc County that Martha P. Grant was born in 1842, and John Thomas Grant was born in February 2, 1844. A son Davis died as a small boy. R. G. Grant operated a store there, and I have in my possession a copy of the "Mobile Journal of Commerce Letter -- Sheet Price -- Current" dated Wednesday, October 29, 1845. Brother John and his family and sister Mary and David R. Looney were already living in Ponto! toc County, Mississippi. Staying in Mississippi until 1847, they moved on to Clarksville, Red River County, Texas where sister Elizabeth and Posey P. Weaver were living, after several months they journeyed on to Rusk County where sister Nancy and William Whitehead had settled. The Reasonovers stayed here for several years, then moving to Grayson County, near Sherman, Texas. James Davis Grant bought land in Robertson County, Texas, near Franklin, his land was known as "Grant Prairie". He remained there the rest of his life, and those of his family who died there are buried in the Owensville Cemetery. The widow Sarah Grant who died January 7. 1860 is also buried there." It does not show that she lived in Robertson County at time of death, however. We do know that James Davis and family moved to Robertson County Texas in 1852. Other information from Sid Baker indicated, "Sarah Grant had a sister named Christina who married a man named James Davis. The 1850 Federal Census records for Marshall County, Tennessee, reflects that Christina was born in North Carolina. However, I have been unable to locate any NC data such as maiden name. Grandma always said that her grandma Grant was born in Northern Ireland. In the 1850 Federal Census for Rusk County Texas and 1880 Federal Census for Robertson County Texas for James David Grant said both parents were born in Tennessee." Further, from Sid's notes, "John Grant, first son of Thomas and Sarah Grant, married Martha Shannon and they were living in Pontotoc County, Mississippi in 1850 with their tow children David and Jackson. Richard G. Grant married Adeline Fowler ca 1829 in Bedford County, Tennessee and died in Coryell County, Texas in 1858 with wife and three children surviving. Thomas Grant's oldest daughter Mary, married David Looney and died in Pontotoc County Mississippi in 1857...." One final relevant note from Sid: "Thomas and Sarah Grant and James and Christina Grant were in Maury County, Tennessee many years prior to 1816. Thomas, James and Christina died in Marshall County Tennessee in 1837 (other information indicates 1838, not 1837), 1840 and 1854 respectively. Sarah and Christina were sisters." Any help would be appreciated. Allen <'\\\><

    1. [TX ROBERTSON] Fw: Texas vital records
    2. Lisa Rhodes
    3. This article was in the Houston Chronicle this morning. I thought everyone would be interested. Online vital records have a bumpy history By MIC BARNETTE The year 2000 was great for Texas genealogists. In June 2000 the Texas Bureau of Vital Statistics placed several statewide vital records indexes on its Web site. Researchers were able to go to the TBVS Web site and access the records at their leisure. The data, however, was awkwardly arranged in separate files that corresponded to the year of the event. Each year had to be searched individually. Rootsweb.com, a genealogical research Web site, purchased a set of the Texas vital records data and prepared it for use on its Web site. An enterprising programmer at Rootsweb combined the single-year files and created a search engine that allows users to search all the data files in a fraction of a second. Unfortunately, the gains of 2000 were lost when questions of privacy were raised in November 2001 in a California newspaper article. The California governor threatened to sue Rootsweb for having the state's vital records indexes online. Within a week Texas Bureau of Vital Records officials followed California's lead and demanded that Rootsweb unplug the online Texas databases. Rootsweb complied. The Texas databases that were online included statewide indexes to marriages 1966-1995, divorces 1968-1997, deaths 1963-1998, general indexes to births 1926-1949 and the summary indexes to births 1950-1995. General indexes, incidentally, list names of parents, while summary indexes do not. In Texas, records of marriages and divorces have been maintained on a county level since the days of the Republic of Texas in the 1830s. Counties began reporting this information to the state in 1966 and 1968, respectively. Births and deaths were kept on a statewide basis in 1903. Births and deaths 1903-1997 are available on microfilm and microfiche at Clayton Library, 5300 Caroline, and at courthouses across the state. Earlier this month, Texas Gov. Rick Perry signed SB 861, which closes birth records for 75 years. This law goes into effect Sept. 1. Currently, birth records are open after 50 years. Death records were not a part of SB 861 and remain available to researchers. Indexes for both births and deaths remain open to researchers. There is some good news for those who would like to research Texas vital records indexes without going to a courthouse. Houston genealogist Hugh Adams has taken the vital records indexes formerly online at the Texas Bureau of Vital Statistics Web site and formatted them on 11 CD-ROMs. Each letter of the alphabet on each CD includes data from births 1926-1995, marriages 1996-2000, divorces 1968-2000 and deaths 1964-1998. A demonstration Web site may be viewed at www.tvrview.com/. The 11 CDs contain surname data arranged alphabetically. Disk 1 covers surnames beginning with A, D and E; disk 2, B; disk 3, C; disk 4, F and G; disk 5, H and I; disk 6, J-L; disk 7, M; disk 8, N-Q; disk 9, R and T; disk 10, S and X; and disk 11, U-Z. The CDs are available from TVRView-H.C. Adams, 12180 Greenspoint Drive, PMB No. 196, Houston, TX 77060-2002. The 11-CD set is $129; individual disks are $15.50.
