    1. [TX ROBERTSON] Morris/Shumate - Morris/Barton Line - Hardeman County, TX and Pontotoc County, OK
    2. Boo da Pest
    3. This is a second post on this line, with new information added. I want to thank those that responded to my earlier post. I am trying to find my elusive Morris relatives. My great-grandmother Bertie Bane Morris Barton was born, whereabouts unknown, on 5 Sep 1872. She died, 3 July 1934 and is buried in Pontotoc County, OK. Her son, Lon Barton, my grandfather was born in Hardeman County, Texas, Quanah to be exact, on 8 Mar 1907. His parents are listed in the county records as R.C. Barton (who was Richard Conway, probably born on the Barton Plantation near Calvert, Milam/Robertson County, Texas) and Helen Barton. R.C. Barton and B.B. Barton are buried near to my grandfather and most of his brothers in East Hill Cemetery, Roff, Oklahoma. My grandfather, Lon Barton, died in Pontotoc County, Oklahoma, 23 Jun 1938, and his mother is listed as Bertie Bane Barton in the funeral book. Also listed on the funeral on the inside cover of the funeral book's box are: Cora Morris and Tommie Morris (Some other notations on the box make it appear that Cora was Mrs. Tommie Morris), Carl Morris, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Morris, Willard Morris, Garner Morris, Fred Morris and Lillian Morris ?Cozad? and daughter. Also listed were Mr. and Mrs. Carl Shumate and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Shumate (my great-grandmother was the daughter of Tom Morris and Willet Shumate). Carl, Guy, Willard and Garner (with correction to Garvin in a different hand) Morris are listed as bearers on the appropriate page in the book. The Barton-Morris plot in Roff, OK's East Hill Cemetery also contains H.C. Morris and Ben Morris who by virtue of birth dates would have been from my great-grandmother's generation. If anyone recognizes these families I would welcome any help. Rich Reed

    3. Posted on: Robertson County Texas Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/Robertson/286 Surname: GILLESPIE ------------------------- Thomas Gillespie, carpenter/builder, born St Johns QC Canada on 22 Oct 1844 was working in Calvert area at sometime between 1885-1895. Died of pneumonia but his family (living in Erath Co) could not afford to ship his body home for burial. Possibly a pauper's burial. Where might he have been buried? Do any records exist for that time period? This relies on family tradition & I do not have any more specifics. Thank you for ANY suggestions.

    1. [TX ROBERTSON] Elizabeth Pauline King Sheffield
    2. Vinton Sheffield
    3. Posted on: Robertson County Texas Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/RobertsonObits/29 Surname: King, Cobb, Craig, Palmer, Boone, McGee, Herron ------------------------- San Antonio Express and News May 12, 2000 Weighing in at 2 1/2 lbs., Elizabeth Pauline King Sheffield started her life's sojourn on March 27, 1913 in Hearne, (Robertson Co.), TX., the last child of twelve children. She was so small, her mother and father, Peter Richard and Elizabeth Jane Craig King, had to place her on a pillow to keep her safe while lying in bed. At the age of 14, she met and married her life's partner, James Isam Sheffield II, seven years her senior. This union produced two girls and two boys, just as she had wanted. Myra E. Bruinekool is the eldest, Martha Juanelle Bruinekool (yes, they married brothers), Number One Son as he likes to refer to himself is Vinton C. Sheffield, then the baby, James I. Sheffield III married to Pam Rosales Sheffield. Her husband remained in her heart and soul for the next 72 years though he passed away in Aug. 1963. During WWII, she was our little "Rosie the Riveter", helping build the P-51 Mustang in the North American Plant in Grand Prairie, TX. She was a lifetime member of the Order of Eastern Star in Ferris, TX. When her younger son, became a ham radio operator, she too studied morse code and passed her test to become K5DLI in Dallas. At the age of 50 and left a widow, she decided to return to school and become a nurse to fulfill a lifelong dream. After graduating from Odessa College, she returned to Dallas and worked as a charge nurse in facilties throughout the city. Often times, we would tease her that her middle name was "go". If someone mentioned going, she would be in the car waiting for us. So, whenever she had a chance to travel, she did. After a hot air balloon ride at the age of 80, she announced that her next wish was a helicopter ride. That was fulfilled on her 87th and final birthday. Our cherished Mother was blessed with 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. She loved having her family around her, sending and receiving mail, and keeping in contact with everyone possible. Nanny was proud of her ability to remember everyone's birthday. She was a lover of life and life loved her back. After moving to San Antonio, she became a member of Northeast Baptist Church where she has many loving friends. Her life began anew when she entered the loving arms of Our Lord on May 10, 2000 and joined her heavenly family. Funeral service will be at Dellcrest Funeral Home, 2023 S. W.W. White at 2 pm Friday, May 12. Interment will be in Dallas the following day at Crownhill Memorial Cemetery beside her beloved husband. Written by her youngest child, James Isam Sheffield III.
