Posted on: Robertson County Texas Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/Robertson/379 Surname: Hereford, Copeland, Carter, McDaniel ------------------------- Lorenzo Dow Hereford married a Sarah Copeland around 1873. Sarah was related to the McDaniel family that lived in Robertson Co. Sarah died in child birth leaving a son, named William Thomas Hereford. Around 1878, Lorenzo D. Hereford died and is buried in the Beck Praire/Nesbitt Cemetery. A Mrs. Carter had taken care of William from the time his mother died and after his father died she was given custody of him. I am trying to find out what happened to William T. Hereford. I have no idea what Mrs. Carter name was or who she was married to. I have tried to search the 1880 Robertson Co census to see if I can locate her. It is taking forever for my computer to down load each page so I have given up going through the census. If anyone has an index to the 1880 census and can tell me what pages there are Carters listed I would appreciate the help. If anyone has any information on Hereford, Copeland, Carter or Mc Daniel families that lived in Robertson County from 1870 I would like to hear from you.

Posted on: Robertson County Texas Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/RobertsonObits/48 Surname: Moss, McKnight ------------------------- Laid to Rest in Glenwood Aug. 23 Funeral services for Miss Mollie Moss, 83, were held Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock in First Presbyterian church, with her pastor, Rev. P. P. Dawson, delivering the eulogy, and her former pastor, Rev. E. H. Hudson, reading the scripture. A special choir sang one of her favorite hymns and Mrs. Paul Moore rendered a solo. Interment was in Glenwood cemetery under the direction of Walker Funeral Home. R. J. Beasley, F.C. Weber, Beorge Vurlew, Sam C. Mitchell, Lee Adams, and S.R. Davis served as active pallbearers, and the family named honorary pallbearers as follows: Rockey Reagan, Henry Miller, Lonnie Borroun, Sid Hatcher, E. M. Quinn, Alex Cowle, J.C. Burrows, I.J. Miller, and George H. Atkins. Miss Moss, a resident of Beeville for more than 50 years, had the misfortune to fall and break her hip some five months ago. Her condition was satisfactory, however, and she had looked forward to walking again soon. Last Friday, however, a sudden turn for the worse was recorded and she was taken to a local hospital, where death occurred Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. A. F. Lutts of San Antonio, Mrs. E. M. Offutt of Kingsville, and Miss Georgie Moss of Beeville, and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives. Out-of-town relatives and friends attending the rites were Dr. and Mrs. W. A. Francis, Kingsville; Sgt. H.O. Francis, Harlingen; Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Brown and Miss Frankie Lutts, San Antonio, Burton Lutts, Three Rivers; Mr. and Mrs. Claude Moss and son, James Roland, Igleside, and Miss Lila Brown. One who knew Miss Moss intimately for many years has contributed the following beautiful tribute: "At about 3 o'clock on Tuesday, August 22, the sweet spirit of Miss Mollie Moss, known and loved by old and young alike, left its earthly tabernacle to be with Christ in the Heavenly Home. All that medical care and loving hands could do was done for her during the five months of her patient suffering; the gently the Master called her to that land where there is no pain. She had "fought a good fight she had finished the course; she had kept the faith." Thenceforth there is laid up for her a crown of righteousness which Christ, the Righteous Judge, shall give her. Coming from a large and well respected family of early Texas pioneers, Miss Mollie inherited those sterling and womanly qualities which make our nation great. Her ideals of Christian character and conduct reflected in her daily walk and conversation, are worthy of emulation. Her father was Samuel Revis Moss from North Carolina; her mother, Mrs. Lydia (McKnight) Moss from Tennessee. They were married in Texas and established their home in Robertson county, near Hearne--a home which became noted for its genuine hospitality and service to the community. Into this home were born five sons and five daughters, Miss Mollie being the eighth child. (Two orphans also were reared by the parents.) The parents each lived to be 87. Miss Mollie had been a loyal member of the Beeville Presbyterian church for about 50 years and her pew was never vacant at any of the services as long as her strength permitted. In her younger days her sweet voice added to the choir. She taught a class of boys for many years, and was a faithful worker in other church activities. She will be most remembered for the daily little acrs of kindness to children of all races and color. Posted on: Robertson County Texas Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Tx/RobertsonObits/44 Surname: Moss, McKnight ------------------------- Very early on the morning of February 28, 1914, when the darkest shades of night began to tinge the eastern sky, the pure spirit of Mrs. Lydia E. Moss winged its way to that wondrous land above, where no night comes. Though born in Tennessee, May 6, 1827, Mrs. Moss spent the greater part of her life in Texas, moving into the state (Robertson County) when she was a little child. She married June 3, 1847, to Mr. Samuel Revis Moss (of Robertson County), who preceded her to the heavenly home more than twenty years ago. She was the mother of ten children, seven of whom survive her. She also reared two orphans, a boy and a girl. Many of the good deeds done by the noble woman will never be known for she was as modest as a woodland violet, but as long as her strength would permit, in her quiet, unassuming way, she went among the sick and needy, scattering her smiles and giving of her means in a way that never failed to bring cheer and hope. She read her Bible daily and loved to sing the old hymns learned in her childhood. Her life was a benediction to all whose lot it was to associate with her, and "her children rise up and call her blessed." All that living hands could do was done for her during her last illness and her death was like the fading of a beautiful day--filled with peace and quiet. Services were conducted Sunday morning at their home on St. Mary's Street by Rev. E. H. Hudson and the body was laid to rest in Glenwood Cemetery beneath a mound of purple and white flowers. "Blessed in the sight of the Lord is the death of the saints." from: Beeville PICAYUNE, Thursday, March 5, 1914, p. 6.

In 1831 when Alexander was 16, his father wrote to Acting Secretary of War Randolph requesting that Alexander be admitted to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. (The only record found at West Point was a copy of the 1831 letter requesting admission). According to his grandson, Samuel Osmer Moss, Alexander Waugh did attend West Point. Alexander Waugh served as 2LT, 1st U.S. Infantry Regiment, from July 1, 1839 to May 31, 1842. After his military service, Alexander and his family moved to Missouri. When the Civil War began, Alexander served in the Confederate Army as a Captain in Co. A (Scott County Rangers), Scott County Battalion, 1st Division, Missouri State Guard; thence Major, Scott County Battalion. He was appointed Division Inspector General with rank of Lt. Colonel, July 27, 1861; and thence elected Colonel, 4th Infantry Regiment, September 23, 1861. The 4th Infantry Regiment disbanded in December 1861, at New Madrid, Missouri. Alexander Waugh's subsequent service during the war is not entirely known, although he ended the war as an Inspector on the staff of Brig. Gen. M. Jeff Thompson, commander of the Sub-District of Northern Arkanses. Alexander Waugh moved his family to Texas in 1863. After the Civil War, Alexander Waugh taught school at Spring Creek school in Robertson County, Texas. According to Jimmie Rice in her history of Benchley, Col. Waugh was one of the first teachers in Benchley. Alexander Waugh was teaching school at the time of his death. According to S.O. Moss, he probably died of pneumonia. He is buried in the Galloway Cemetery at Spring Creek. The grave originally did not have a tombstone. It was marked by a big tree with an X carved in it (head) and the foot was marked by a slab of wood. Before he died, he told his family to meet him in heaven. The children of Alexander Waugh and his wife, Almeriah, were: Alexander Waugh James G. Waugh Townsend Waugh Susan Virginia Waugh Rachel J. Waugh William B. Waugh Henrietta Maria Louise Waugh Son Alexander was shot in an argument over a hog and he is buried in the Suggs Cemetery in Robertson County. Townsend (Townie) moved to Houston. Waugh Street in Houston is named for him. Three daughters--Nettie, Susan and Rachel--married brothers. Nettie married Samuel Revis Moss Jr., Susan married William Moss and Rachel married Howell P. My ancestor, Priscilla Ann Davis Hughes, migrated to Robertson County, Texas just before the census was taken in 1880. She came with two of her sons and their wives. George M. DALLAS Hughes was b. 12 May 1846 and died 16 November 1890. Wyatt C. Hughes was b. abt. 1859 and died 27 February 1888. I'm not sure what happen to Prissie, but a Mrs. Hughes married an Austin in Robertson Co. Dallas' wife and children remained in TX, while Wyatt's wife and children returned to Jackson Co., FL. Dallas and Wyatt were both relatively young men when they died, Dallas being 44 and Wyatt being only 29, respectively, when they died. Has anyone access to old newspapers, books, or so forth that might have an account of the deaths? I would appreciate any information at all. Linda Dumas lcdumas@aol.com
