Family tradition says that Nancy was Cherokee. They had nine known children and in 1880 John, Nancy and eight of their children were living in the Boone Prairie Community in Robertson County, Texas. John is buried at West Boone Prairie Cemetery and I believe that the other Carters buried there are his descendants. John died in 1884 and Nancy died after 1899. She is thought to be buried by John in an unmarked grave. I have more information about the Carter family of Boone Prairie so feel free to e-mail me. Keith White

Carter, wife Nancy and two children and an adoptive son living in Robertson Co. Tx. I found a John H. Carter in the West Boone Cemtery that was born in 1827 and died in 1884 and assume that this is the same person as the one on the census. My interest is the adoptive son who I believe is William Thomas Hereford/Hafford. William was the son of Lorenzo Dow Hereford and Sarah Copeland. Both of them died when William was very young and was supposedly raised by a Mrs. Carter. If anyone knows anything about this Carter family would you please get in touch with me.     3. Dear Friends of Robertson County TX, I have faithfully watched postings for a year. So far no has mentioned marriage, death, burial or other info re a person named RANKIN. Robert Bruce RANKIN b 1833, AL, wife Almira Cotton. Census 1880 shows family in Robertson Co. TX. Robert died (I am told) 25 Apr 1886, was buried in Robertson Co TX. Children James B & Mary. Does anyone know anything of these folks? Hints? I wrote to library & court house, no reply from either. Roberts brother Duncan and family lived in Falls & Hill Counties. Margaret was the daughter of Unknown Williams and Sarah Caroline Wood. Sarah Caroline was the daughter of Thomas J. and Maria Rutherford Wood who were settled in Scottsboro, Jackson County. I know some Rutherford and Starkey families went to Robertson County, Texas and it seems likely that Margaret and John Tipton went with them, but I have no proof of that, other than the mention of a probate record.

My great great grandfather, Peter E. McCain and his brother Jacob came to Ellis Co. in 1870's from Marshal Co. AL by way of Red River Co, TX. Peter E. McCain's son Rufus A. McCain married Sophronia Eudora (Dora) GARRARD IN 1876, probably in Ellis Co. She was about 15 years old. They settled in Milford. Sophronia (Dora) Garrard was an orphan whose parents Tom GARRARD and Jane (WILDS) COOKE? had died in a fever epidemic in Calvert, Robertson Co. in 1873. Thomas GARRARD was residing in Springfield, Limestone County at the 1850 census and in Coryell County with wife Jane and the beginnings of their family at the 1860 and 1870 censuses. Jane Wilds was possibly a daughter of Jane HARLAN'S first marriage to Augustus W. COOKE, early settler and first surveyor of Robertson County. When her parents died in 1873, the 11-year-old Sophronia (Dora) was sent to live with relatives in Ellis Co., perhaps a member of the COOKE family?
