I think you are right about the Latino births, John, but some probably were drop-in births at the hospital. (Women sometimes intentionally waited until the last minute so they couldn't be transferred to Paris) I was told of situations where the woman sat in the car in the parking lot until the baby was crowning. I guess they just didn't want to go to Paris, although they'd have gotten better care there from an OB specialist instead of a general practitioner. Neither hospital could turn them away just because they had no money. Many times these women had no prenatal care, no insurance, and no money. I remember the man you speak of bringing Mexican-speaking men, women, and children who were injured to the emergency room. He always paid their bill with cash. I know he had whole families living at his place (in addition to single men) and he seemed to take responsibility for their heath care. He served as interpreter when he brought someone to the emergency room. The Latino births may have been delivered by a midwife, possibly a qualified one. Back in the eighties, there was a Coyote who brought scores of peons he sort of rented out to landowners. He took care of his lendable "slaves," allegedly even importing prostitutes from Mexico to console them in their exile. Maybe midwivery was part of his care system. I think he is no longer in Red River County. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gene Phillips" <gnphllps@comcast.net> To: <TXREDRIV-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, March 05, 2003 8:09 AM Subject: Re: [TXREDRIV] Babies not born in Red River Co. > At 03:02 PM 3/3/03, you wrote: > >Jim, > >I don't know exactly when all the doctors in Clarksville stopped > >delivering babies but they had already stopped before I went to work at > >the Clarksville Hospital about 25 years ago. > > > I would guess about 1975. The numbers dropped drastically that year from the previous year, but had been steadily declining through the 60s. It dropped to single digits in 1984 and stayed there. What is interesting is that probably 90% of the surnames of the people born in the 80s and 90s were Hispanic. > Below are the birth numbers from 1926 to 1995. > > Gene > > > 1926 - 314 > 1927 - 353 > 1928 - 644 > 1929 - 493 > 1930 - 521 > 1931 - 535 > 1932 - 561 > 1933 - 683 > 1934 - 752 > 1935 - 725 > 1936 - 561 > 1937 - 616 > 1938 - 553 > 1939 - 521 > 1940 - 537 > 1941 - 526 > 1942 - 560 > 1943 - 620 > 1944 - 558 > 1945 - 462 > 1946 - 539 > 1947 - 508 > 1948 - 452 > 1949 - 440 > 1950 - 398 > 1951 - 414 > 1952 - 348 > 1953 - 392 > 1954 - 379 > 1955 - 339 > 1956 - 357 > 1957 - 337 > 1958 - 315 > 1959 - 329 > 1960 - 283 > 1961 - 279 > 1962 - 267 > 1963 - 249 > 1964 - 232 > 1965 - 198 > 1966 - 172 > 1967 - 162 > 1968 - 145 > 1969 - 144 > 1970 - 202 > 1971 - 145 > 1972 - 88 > 1973 - 90 > 1974 - 95 > 1975 - 41 > 1976 - 16 > 1977 - 13 > 1978 - 13 > 1979 - 14 > 1980 - 16 > 1981 - 9 > 1982 - 12 > 1983 - 11 > 1984 - 3 > 1985 - 3 > 1986 - 5 > 1987 - 3 > 1988 - 4 > 1989 - 3 > 1990 - 4 > 1991 - 4 > 1992 - 5 > 1993 - 6 > 1994 - 3 > 1995 - 1 > > > > ==== TXREDRIV Mailing List ==== > > > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 > > > ==== TXREDRIV Mailing List ==== Visit Red River County GenWeb site http://www.rootsweb.com/~txredriv ============================== To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237
Thanks, Sharon. This is almost certainly the basic fact. Probably there were no midwives at all -- I was solely conjecturing. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sharon Black" <black@1starnet.com> To: <TXREDRIV-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, March 05, 2003 1:18 PM Subject: Re: [TXREDRIV] Babies not born in Red River Co. > I think you are right about the Latino births, John, but some probably > were drop-in births at the hospital.
