    3. Jim, I don't know exactly when all the doctors in Clarksville stopped delivering babies but they had already stopped before I went to work at the Clarksville Hospital about 25 years ago. I only worked there for about a year and I did deliver one baby for a girl who didn't have time to make it to Paris. She didn't even have time for one of our local docs to get there. He got there after it was pretty well over. That was quite an experience because I didn't really have the equipment that I needed. Plus, the baby was premature and had to be rushed to Texarkana by ambulance as soon as possible. He made it, though and did just fine. It will be confusing for future genealogists who are looking for births in Red River county . Most will be in Lamar County but a few will be in Idabel, OK. My thinking was, Well the trains for sure will never run through Red River County again now, due to No tracks to run on if they wanted to. Another thought: The hospital in Clarksville (Red River Co) stopped delivering baby several years ago. I assume the records will show "No" births in Red River County from that point on. That just does not see right. 3. And I believe some are even going to Mt Pleasant. I was told a few years ago a OB/Gyn doctor was going to come to Clarksville, but he was told no other doctor would take emergency calls for him if he was out of town etc, so he did not come. 3. You would think some kind of records of births to citizens of Red River County could be recorded in Red River Co, but I guess not. I even feel guilty that my 3 children were not born in Texas because I was in the service and in school out of state. Well, not really guilty, but just the point of genealogy records for them will be hard to find. I would guess about 1975. The numbers dropped drastically that year from the previous year, but had been steadily declining through the 60s. It dropped to single digits in 1984 and stayed there. What is interesting is that probably 90% of the surnames of the people born in the 80s and 90s were Hispanic. Below are the birth numbers from 1926 to 1995. Gene 1926 - 314 1927 - 353 1928 - 644 1929 - 493 1930 - 521 1931 - 535 1932 - 561 1933 - 683 1934 - 752 1935 - 725 1936 - 561 1937 - 616 1938 - 553 1939 - 521 1940 - 537 1941 - 526 1942 - 560 1943 - 620 1944 - 558 1945 - 462 1946 - 539 1947 - 508 1948 - 452 1949 - 440 1950 - 398 1951 - 414 1952 - 348 1953 - 392 1954 - 379 1955 - 339 1956 - 357 1957 - 337 1958 - 315 1959 - 329 1960 - 283 1961 - 279 1962 - 267 1963 - 249 1964 - 232 1965 - 198 1966 - 172 1967 - 162 1968 - 145 1969 - 144 1970 - 202 1971 - 145 1972 - 88 1973 - 90 1974 - 95 1975 - 41 1976 - 16 1977 - 13 1978 - 13 1979 - 14 1980 - 16 1981 - 9 1982 - 12 1983 - 11 1984 - 3 1985 - 3 1986 - 5 1987 - 3 1988 - 4 1989 - 3 1990 - 4 1991 - 4 1992 - 5 1993 - 6 1994 - 3 1995 - 1

    3. The Latino births may have been delivered by a midwife, possibly a qualified one. Back in the eighties, there was a Coyote who brought scores of peons he sort of rented out to landowners. He took care of his lendable "slaves," allegedly even importing prostitutes from Mexico to console them in their exile. Maybe midwivery was part of his care system. I think he is no longer in Red River County. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gene Phillips" <gnphllps@comcast.net> To: <TXREDRIV-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, March 05, 2003 8:09 AM Subject: Re: [TXREDRIV] Babies not born in Red River Co. > At 03:02 PM 3/3/03, you wrote: > >Jim, > >I don't know exactly when all the doctors in Clarksville stopped > >delivering babies but they had already stopped before I went to work at > >the Clarksville Hospital about 25 years ago. > > > I would guess about 1975.
