Jim, thank you so much for all your efforts and time on this matter. A bell went off in my head when you mentioned the dedication in 1982. My mother attended the 100 year celebration of the church. She gave me a copy of the history of the church they received at the celebration as well as copies of the deeds where Rebecca Wilson and P. W. Igo and S. C. Igo each gave land to build the new church. I had it filed in my McCarley papers because L.W. McCarley (Nora Alice McCarley Bledsoe was Walter Wm. Bledsoe's wife) was a trustee of the church and signed the papers. I had forgotten about it. It history is 3 typed pages and reads in part: " The Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Clarksville, Texas 1883 - 1984" Parts of it read.." The first Cumberland Presbyterian Church organized in Texas was the Shiloh Church....The first presbytery was organized November 27, 1837. ...Rev. A. R. Roark was ordered by presbytery to form a circuit between the Red River and the Sulfur Fork to form a Circuit between Clarksville Circuit. The original Shiloh Church was organized about six miles and a little northwest from where the town of Clarksville stands. It was believed to have been named Shiloh in honor of the Shiloh Church in Carroll county, Tennessee, near McKenzie, from which some of the members in Texas had come. .... Other early-day members connected with the Church were the Dinwiddlies, who came from the old Shiloh church in Tennessee, the Fultons and the Bledsoes. The present Shiloh Church, of course, has been moved from the original site, but according to tradition, the original Shiloh congregation has always conducted services and had services thought the years. ....Present members of the Church are descendants of the original settlers and founders of the Church. In closing, I want to share with you in this brief history a poem written by J. H. Darnel of TexarkanaTexas. This was first shared with the folks here June 04, 1983 at the 100th anniversary of the founding of Shiloh Church, This poem is entitled " At Shiloh".Parks McCullah, Pastor. If anyone has an interest, I will be happy to type the whole thing out as it does give the names of , Rev. Milton Estill, Rev. Sumner Bacon, Rev. Mitchell Smith, rev. Amos Roark, Bro. Fulton. P. W. Igo, S. C. Igo, Please excuse my typing but if I make a correction I have retype everything from the correction. I promise if anyone wants a copy in its entirety, it will be typed a little better at least. I think I have finally figuredthis out with everyone's help. Thank all or you for your help, especially Jim. Tom could the family referred to as "the Watsons" be your family? I will check it out. It may be Cumberland Presbyterian Church. I feel Shiloh is reserved to the area of the Old Cemetery about 2 miles west of Madras, but I could be wrong. I just tried to call Gillie Quick that lives across the road from the Madras Cemetery/Church but no answer. I will try later. I am sure she can clear it up for us. It does seem clear the church you went to was at Madras. The one at Shiloh moved to Clarksville in the mid 1850s. > According to Bessie W Strickland in the RR Recollections book, the Madras Cemetery land was purchased in 1892 from the P.H. & S.C. Igo.. In 1924 ladies formed the Madras Cemetery Society. Cemetery was enclosed with a cyclone fence in 1959. In 1970, a perpetual care fund was set up my membe rs for the care of the cemetery in the future. A large arch was installed over the cemetery gate fwhich reads "Madras Cemetery". This was made possible by a donation from a member. A plaque donated anonymously was installed on the arch post. The dedication was held in 1982. (I do not know if the arch gate was build in 1970 or 1982). > Jim Giddens > Paris,Tx > p.s. I original was replying only to Diane, but due to the length of information I decided to send it to the group as a point of interest. > > > > ==== TXREDRIV Mailing List ==== > > > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 > >
