    3. Ginger, I recall as you do about no child should have to walk no more than 3 miles to a school. The man told me the first school was where the Cherry (Stones Chapel) Cemetery is now. I under stood him to be saying a one room school was started in the old Cherry Church (one room) on the central east side of the land next to the fence and a newer church building had been built on the other side of the land. He said later a man bought some land across the road and about 1/2 mile to the east and gave about 10 acres of it for a school and here they built a new two room Cherry school that had a ballfield etc. The land was just past (east) of the old Grant house across a off road going to Macedonia-Siloam (sp) Cemetery. My dad also told me that they live across the road (north side) from the cemetery and up the hill to the east a little ways. He father was teaching at the school and must have lived in the area. My dad never talked to me about the location of the school, I always assumed in was on the same lot as the church. I do not know what year the new school was built. May my grandfather had moved and teaching at Hopewell by that time. I know he was teaching at Cherry there in 1912 but was at Hopewell by 1917. I hope this helps you. Got to got to work now in Sulphur Springs at Eckerds all day. Opps, I just noticed this is headed for the complete list, but I will let it go. My brother-in-laws' cabin (which we use like it was our own) is located in the woods in the Cherry area. A neighboring landowner once told him there used to be a school next to his land. I have often wondered if the neighbor was referring to the Cherry School. Haven't we discussed before that schools were traditionally about 6 miles apart so all children could be within walking distance (3 miles) from a school???? Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong. > > Ginger > Annona, TX > > > > ==== TXREDRIV Mailing List ==== > > > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 >

    3. Jim I remember Mom saying she loved the one room school's. She could finish her assignment and participate in the other classes. She found it made her higher grades so much easier and she felt more grown-up. When she got in a school that had separate rooms for the grades her school work was much harder and the classes were much longer. She didn't think she learned more in the seperate classes, but she must have. 3. It makes since to me. If a child was not smart enough, the could just let it pass over their head (ears), but if they were smart as your mother was, the would be open to learn much more from the older classes. I often wondered how several classes could be taught in one room. I still don't understand, but your input helps.
