    3. Jim, The only Texas Almanac I have is the 2000-2001 edition. I looked through the index of cities and towns. They list towns that don't exist anymore also. There is only one Pecan Point listed and it is listed in Red River, but shows to not exist anymore. There is only one Pecan Gap listed. It shows being in Delta/Fannin Counties and a population of 260 up from 245 in 1990. It also shows to have a Post Office. Interesting that there is only one reference to a Pecan Bayou in the Water Resources section. It is part of the Colorado River and that would be more in north central Texas. Although, looking at the Red River County map, it clearly shows the Pecan Bayou that is in the county. There are two other bodies of water that it shows connecting up with Pecan Bayou, Denwiddie Bayou and Blanton Creek. The source shows a little southeast of Woodland and it empties into the Red River at the TX/LA border. Reading through the Red River section of the Water Resources though turns up more of what you read on your sheet. The section is quite large, but I will copy the section that pertains to what you have written. It reads as follows: "A number of important gateways into Texas from the North were established along the stream such as Pecan Point and Jonesborough in Red River County, Colbert's Ferry and Preston in Grayson County and later, Doan's Store Crossing in Wilbarger County." This might very well be the same sentence that your dad had written down. Hope this helps... Drew BTW - A great place to find the old copies of the Texas Almanac is at Half-Price Bookstores. I find alot of interesting books there actually. 1. Re: [TXREDRIV] Pecan Gap vs Pecan Point
    2. Jim Giddens
    3. Thanks Drew, My main points was to ad credibility to the age of the present day Pecan Gap which I have visited a couple of time. I even found some Giddens (distant cousins) buried in the Pecan Gap Cemetery. A very months ago when Carrie mentioned the date on a sign at Pecan Gap (where she lives) states a date of 1892, I guess I was puzzled by Pecan Gap being that old. This note I found may give credit to that statement. However I am wondering in this case if my dad typed in Pecan Gap instead of Pecan Point by mistake. I am well aware of Pecan Point that was a community/town on the Red River at a point in the northeast corner of the county on the Red River. Pecan Point is on a couple of maps I have copies of back in the early 1800s drawn by Stephen F Austin. It is also mentioned prominently in the Red River Dust book as a early ferry crossing and at main port for the steamboats. Pecan Gap is close to the Sulphur River and I am sure the fine people of Pecan Gap would not put up such a sign without documentation. I was just surprised at the age of Pecan Gap. I did take a very pictures of some old houses in Pecan Gap but they were not that old. Also, Pecan Gap is the home town of a Avery friend of my Gene Weaver that recently saw his name put on the new gym in Avery. He and his brother Floyd Weaver both went to Paris Junior College about the time I did in 1960. Floyd pitched a little pro baseball. I saw him on TV once with the Houston Astros. Well, I go to rambling again. I am up late preparing my Giddens information (in a rush) for the Red River County Hall of Fame meeting in Clarksville in the morning. 2. Jim Giddens
    3. Drew & all, I have talked to the State Hwy Dept in Clarksville about putting up signs with the names of the creeks in RR Co, but was told the county was to tight on money. They said it was pretty expensive to maintain the signs. I have a map that specify shows and names all the creeks in the county. It adds to the interest when driving the back roads. Many have little if any water in them during the dry times. Also, the location of the long gone Pecan Point is on private land of the large Chapman Ranch and accessible by public road, probably no road at all. The Pecan Bayou crosses Hwy 37 north of Clarksville, just below Dimple Hill. Pecan Bayou is also the north border of the original Giddens land grant back in the 1830s. This is about 6 miles east of Hwy 37. I am on my way the Chamber in Clarksville this a.m. Jim Giddens Paris, Tx ----- Original Message ----- From: "Drew Slate" <drew-slate@charter.net> To: <TXREDRIV-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, May 02, 2003 11:17 PM Subject: RE: [TXREDRIV] Pecan Gap & Jones > Jim, > > The only Texas Almanac I have is the 2000-2001 edition.
