Darla & All, If you are setting at the red light in Clarksville facing west at night, the huge, high, golden arches will be the major attention grabber in you view. This is not a complaint, but a statement of contrast in relation to the history represented on the square and immediate area. I think it is great that Clarksville warranted McDonald's coming to Clarksville. I am in Clarksville several times each month, and I was just a little startled myself at my perception of my view at the moment for the red light. To me it reminded me more of the importants of history. You are of course correct about the Flags & the yellow ribbons in Clarksville. I have recently said the there are people in Clarksville doing a great job in Clarksville to give a face lift to the historic city. I see may historic houses in Clarksville, when I was a boy growing up in Clarksville, I just saw some old houses. Many I just did not see at all due to lack of interest. The Bell house for example was just a big old house that my cousins lived in. I stayed in the house in bed one day after I had my tonsils take out at the age of 6 (1948) in the old hospital. We did enjoy sliding on the banisters, but they were not easy. Interesting isn't it...on one side it is great that Clarksville is gaining some more business, but on the other side it over shadows the true draw to the town. My wife and I have discussed this same situation in her hometown of Lovington, NM. It was a small sleepy town when I first visited there in 1994, but today they have quite a few of the major fast food chains, 3 grocery stores, and a few new businesses, not to mention a few new hotels on the edge of town. I think that it is a necessary evil to have these type of situations happen, BUT I think it is our duty as protectors of our history to curb it some. What I mean is this...I have seen towns say Yes we want "fill in the name", but your sign will not be above x amount of ft tall. Or certain types of buildings have to be a certain distance from the town square. I have even seen towns REQUIRE that a new business build there new office to match that of the other buildings around it (this is generally done around town squares not around the outskirts). Another thing to do is push the taxes up on these businesses a little to improve the older buildings and streets around the town. There are many things to do to build up a town, yet keep the old historic part preserved. I have not observed this as much in Texas as I have in TN, NC, GA, and AL. Especially in TN, where they embrace the history and create a major "tourist trap" to keep their fine city growing without hurting their history. There is a fine line, but I think RR has the history to do it, as long as the proper people run the show and truly have th interest of the city in mind and not just money.
