Jim, You mentioned briefly that you attended the meeting last week for the new committee (I don't have my notes here so I can't recall the exact name) and you would give us a report later. I was out of town last week and could not be there, but I was at the first meeting. There were not many in attendance that week, but they were certainly on track with their plans. Would appreciate any info you care to share. Ginger Annona, TX
Well there were about 15 people at the Friends of Red River County Cemeteries" meeting. It was discussed way of getting groups to adopt a cemetery and clean it up twice a year. Groups such as civic clubs, V.F.D, churches, businesses, school clubs, scouts etc. This may work better that trying to collect money which can be a hold can of worms (paper work and accountability). There was mention of presenting it to the public via KCAR. Becky Hale is the one heading this up. Becky & Mary Hausler will work on how to present it to the groups and Mary agreed to speak to them or to arrange for one of their own that is interested to speak to them. I told Mary I would help her if she needed any help from me. I did take a copy of a list of cemeteries in the county that has a person listed at the contact person. Almost all of the people at the meeting were members of the RR Co Genealogy Society, but not all. The next meeting was set for Aug 18, due to people being out of town etc. It was pointed that this groups is in no way to interfere or override or replace the wonderful work that the many cemeteries association are now doing. This is one reason the word "Friend" was used. This is far the cemeteries that are abandoned and uncared for cemeteries. The help of the county/sheriff dept was also discussed. They do help, but this is mostly a one time thing for the "big" stuff that has grown up over many years, so that others can come in an clean it up with. They can not be expected to maintain cemeteries. I guess that is about it. Hope to see you and others at the next meeting.
