Poke - you do not eat the berries because they are poison. You pick and eat the very tender leaves in the spring--not now. Don't want anyone getting sick! Poke comes up in all my flower beds but I just cut it down. Grandma said "waste not and want not" but I do not want Poke! PAT SHIVELY ELMORE
I have never eaten it, but my Dad always talked fondly of eating it as a kid He always said pick the very tender leaves in the spring, but do not pick after the plant started producing berries as the whole plant was poisonous then. I don't know if he was right or not. I do know the berries make a great dye..........I use them in my basketweaving at times and have the plants all over my property. One big healthy one by my mailbox!
