    3. Yes, perhaps my experience will help. My ggfather and children were on a census but ten years later had disappeared, I found him by reading the entire census record and discovered a GW Bates had the same children's name as my ggfather, GWButts, so can assume the census taker wrote down the wrong name. Apparently my ggfather could not read nor write because some of the land records was signed with an "X", so he wouldn't have been aware of the mistake; and may not have been very eager to help.
