The George Washington program at the last Genealogy Society was really great I thought. If I am not mistaken, it was Jun 14th the last time I got a message from the RR list. That must be a record. Not any RR Co news at this time, too busy with getting grandchildren married. It was not near this complicated when Sue and I got married almost 47 years ago. I have got my digital camera pictures loaded into my computer. I have not figured out yet how to select only certain pictures (say 20) out of 190 to email. The string of pictures to select from are too small for me to make out clearly due to maybe 5 or 6 of them in a row maybe be almost the same pose and the number assigned to them does not show. I guess I have to read my instructions some more. I will have to learn how to avoid some many of my picture being too blurred, either me moving or the subject. When I lean against a post it did help. I do have two tripods that may come into use. Showing the pictures on our TV is real cool. Look forward to taking a lot of cemetery and back road pictures again, but it may be Sept before things are back close to normal for that. Maybe I can sneak some in during the month of July. Jim Giddens Paris, Tx p.s. Did I tell you guys about the 440 lb wild hog my brother-in-law killed in Red River County. I have a picture of the head.
I agree with you Jim..the program was very good. My grandaughter went with me and she loved it. In my family research I found that my 9 great grandfather William Offutt's (the Immigrant) great grandson was Nathaniel Offutt Crawford...he married Sarah Blackburn sister to Ann Blackburn that married Bushrod Washington. Bushrod was George's favorite nephew and he succeeded at Mt. Vernon after George. My grandauther (she is 5) told Judge Morriss that she knew why George Washington died.......it was those nurses they did it......he just laughed and explained the bleeding process to her. He gave her a card and told her to look at his web site for photos and information on the program this is the link... http://www.joshmorriss.org/bio_&_photo.htm I hope we could have more programs like this....... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim Giddens" <jimgidd@suddenlink.net> To: "Red River Co Tx Rootsweb" <TXREDRIV-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 20, 2007 10:31 PM Subject: [TXREDRIV] rambling, not genealogy. > The George Washington program at the last Genealogy Society was really > great I thought. > If I am not mistaken, it was Jun 14th the last time I got a message > from the RR list. We visited Mt.Vernon back in 1999. It was maybe my favorite stop on the trip. Information of the guides was interesting. One statement was that George was bleed only 4 times, and that was at his own request. Their family grave yard was very interesting but that would be too long of rambling (must be long). I remember the nephew being talked about. The guide say when George died, it was because of something he had done many times. He went for a ride on his horse, got snowed on (got clothes wet), came home and did not immediately change into dry clothes, which is again something not uncommon. However this time the got a throat infection that kept getting worse and he died of it. One shot of penicillin today would have saved him. It is too said he died only 2 years after coming home from Washington as President. The guides told us that serious efforts from time to time had been made to moves his grave to Washington DC, but his will stipulated he be buried at Mt Vernon, and he is still there. Him and Martha's coffins are visible through the iron fence and were never placed through the opening into the burial room (what do you call it) where several members of the family are buried. The proclaimed builder of the coffins (not sure what they are made of, maybe marble) were about 1 or 2 inches too large to pass through the opening. Some think the builder did that on purpose to promote his business. Much more but better stop.
