OK guys, I finally made the big leap of faith and bought me a digital camera. Now for reading the instruction. Still a little feverous about leaving my comfortable 35 mm but once I got it in my hands, I started getting excited. It is a Nikon CoolPix L5 digital/movie, 7.2 megipex, 5 optical zoom with 4 digital zoom vibration reduction and uses regular AA alkaline batteries which is something I wanted. Also makes movies but I guess digitals do that. I will probably try it out next week, too much going on right now. It was a close out so I hope I got a good deal. Those cemeteries better watch out. Jim - You will LOVE it ... for a lot of reasons. You'll learn about them as you use it and you'll, no doubt, get pointers from the list. How about a cell phone whereby you can send us an e-mail from the cemetery? Outstanding. Only complaint I have with my cheaper digital camera is close shots. Anything closer than two feet and it starts getting blury. Buy you a digital memory card for it and you can take a thousand pics before it gets full. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim Giddens" <jimgidd@suddenlink.net> To: "Red River Co Tx Rootsweb" <TXREDRIV-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, May 10, 2007 9:57 PM Subject: [TXREDRIV] Finally went digital (not genealogy > OK guys, I finally made the big leap of faith and bought me a digital > camera. > Now for reading the instruction. (delete if not interested, this will ware off soon) The memory card the salesman sold me is a SD Card 1GB. He said it would hold about 150 pictures, where as my camera by itself would hold only about ten. He did say I could by a larger memory card if I wanted. Close out price on this camera was $215.00. I can take it back within 30 days if I change my mind. I do have a cell phone but I have never thought about using it to send pictures via e-mail to anyone. That will be something else this old dog with have to learn. Some one did put a picture of my wife in my cell phone for me so I see her when I open my phone. Yes, that is a good thing. Maybe my cell phone package is to cheap to e-mail, I will have to check that out. Jim, When thinking about the quality of picture you want to take, think about the final print that you want. You have a camera that takes up to 7.2 mega pixels, but you will probably never need to use that "best" setting. Look at your instructions and see how many pixels are used on each of the good, better, and best settings. You may also want to consider the final size of your picture. Generally, a 3.0 megapixel shot will put enough pixels (dots of color within a square inch) that will give you 35mm quality on a 3x5 picture. 4.5 megapixels for a 6x8, 6.0 megapixels for an 8x10. I would bet that when considering the final size and megapixels needed, that you would be able to put over a 1000 pictures on your 1GB memory card. I think you got a really good deal, considering the megapixels and the optical zoom. An optical zoom of 3 is pretty common, and the optical zoom is soooo much better than the digital. The optical zoom actually brings the shot in closer using the focusing lens, where as the digital simply takes the picture and digitally enlarges it. Digitally, the picture will fade but not always where you can visibly notice it. But it may show up when you try to enlarge it. If your having trouble with close up shots, wait a second to give it a chance to focus. Secondly, your camera will probably have a feature to lock in the intended picture before taken. Try to push the button about half-way first. There will be a light that comes on in one of the corners of your view finder, then press the button all the way. This should make close ups much clearer. I have really enjoyed my digital cameras over the years.
