I think I could pretty well find and follow the road from Clarksville to Paris or vice versa. I'll bet the difference in the mileage wouldn't be that much, it's just cut a good deal of crooks and turns. I remember when I was about 6 and we made a trip to Paris in a small Chevy coupe. I surmised that I could probably walk all the way to Paris because I stood up all the way while we drove to Paris. Kids? ? ? About 5 years ago, my daddy wanted me to come to see him at the nursing home to take care of some business. He asked me if I had to drive from Detroit [I did, of course, we live here] and he said he was sorry that I had to drive the old bumpy road. I inwardly laughed. He worked on that road as the highway was being built new in the 1956 era, I believe. Our son was just a baby then. It is actually a creek to me, but is named Pecan Bayou. In the Dimple and Hwy 37 area it is spread out about a mile wide, sort of like a "low land" Although there are 3 bridges, the rest of it the road had to be built up about like a dam, but the 3 bridge area are more like water-way for the water to run. One the mileage, I was only considering from Detroit to Clarksville, I am not knowledgeable on the old road from Paris to Detroit. What we call the new 82 (1960) from Detroit to Clarksville is basically the old stagecoach road but still off in places. It was changed to cover Bagwell due to the railroad coming in (not sure what year that was). I wonder if anyone on this list knows any Jemison family who lived in your area in the late 1800 and early 1900. My grandmother was born in Bagwell in 1891. Her name was Lizzie M Jemison. Her mother was Lizzie Sport Jemison and her father was Joseph T Jemison. Lizzie Sport was the daughter of Levi Sport. Any help appreciated. Thanks Sally Eichhorn Icorn@i1.net
Pam, I think Jim answered your question already, but yes, there is this place called Pecan Bayou just north of Clarksville. Not knowing for sure, even though I drove it every day to work, but 30 miles won't miss it far, but the old route I am talking about, there was no straight road from Blossom to Detroit, nor was there a straight road from Detroit to Clarksville. I remember very well because I worked on these roads. Just guessing, but I feel that the new road from Clarksville to Paris made the trip close to 10 miles closer, I will just wait and see, Sam Paris ----- Original Message ----- From: <NANAREB@aol.com> To: <txredriv@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 21, 2007 10:02 PM Subject: Re: [TXREDRIV] Not Gena. This is not a trick question in any way. Just an old guy thinking about how far we used to travel from Clarksville to Paris. Pine Mill road was the road we used as 82 was being built, but I don't think it was ever Hy. 82. Thank you for your answer. I will drive it out some day. Sam, Sounds like a trick question to me. I don't think I will bite and wait for a the answer. Reminds me, a aunt of mine was telling me that in Paris, Pine Mill Road, or Post Oak road, use to be the old US 82. Some one will have to show me that before I believe it, but maybe so. Jim G p.s. My answer to the Bagwell mileage would be about 3 to 4 miles saved by the new road in about 1960. I will bite after all. ----- Original Message ----- From: "sam embrey" <sre795@suddenlink.net> To: <TXREDRIV@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 21, 2007 9:07 PM Subject: [TXREDRIV] Not Gena. > Since the site has been so quite, I thought it might be a good time to > ask a silly question. My compute has been in the hospital since last Thursday p.m. I have only checked the last two e-mail. It is 30 miles from Paris to Clarksville. It is about 15 miles from Paris down US 82 to Detroit and the county line. The new US 82 (about 45 year sold now), bypasses Bagwell and goes straight to Clarksville. To go to Bagwell, on the east side of Detroit, take hwy FM 2573 to Bagwell (about 4 to 5 more miles). From Bagwell, to go to Clarksville, continue on FM 2573 southward back to US 82 and then on to Clarksville. FM 2573 is basically a loop off 82 to go thru Bagwell. And to Pam, I have not read the previous e-mails but Pecan Bayou basically starts north of Bagwell about 10 miles. It run southeastward and is joined by other creeks before it get to US 37 just north of Dimple. It continues southeastward for a few miles until it turns eastward about 2 miles north of Madras, Shiloh, Concord & White Rock. After is passes on the south side of Antioch, it turns a bit northward and continues to wind to dump into the Red River in Red River County just before the Bowie County line. My GGG Grandfather settle the Concord area starting in 1833 and his 1600 acres was bordered on the north by the Pecan Bayou. I only about 2 weeks ago made a back road run and as I was on Hwy 37 headed south, I was at the top of Dimple Hill, I took a couple of good pictures of the stretch northward of Hwy 37 and the 3 bridges that cross the Pecan Bayou (it takes 3 to get across it). It is pretty spread out in this area about like Scatter creek is. My dad tells me before the new hwy in the 1940, there were 5 different bridges to cross the Pecan Bayou. Note: this is not bridges to cross the Bayou in 3 or 5 different locations, It takes that many bridges to get across the low lying area. I have picture that was made of me an my sisters standing on these new bridges in about 1946 to 49, not sure exactly. I will try to check the last 4 days of e-mail in the morning. We are in the middle two graduations and two wedding (grandchildren) within the next couple of months. My wife has me pretty busy with cards, parties etc. All have a good week. Jess, Thanks for sending the Giddens obit. Yes that is a distant cousin. It is a little strange that I only met him one time, and that was this past March at his aunt's funeral in Bogata. I had read her obit in the Paris News, did not know her but read that her maiden name was Giddens. I went and learned of and met the 3 brothers, Jesse, Bill and John Wayne Giddens of Farmersville, La. I knew there were several (many) Giddens in Louisiana but I did not know any of my Giddens line were there. Bill's father, Charlie Porter Giddens Jr, had moved for Annona, Tx when the boys were very small. The Sr. C.P. Giddens was post master of Annona in 1914 and is buried south of Annona in the Russell Cemetery. I hand never learned of Charles P. Giddens Jr. or anything about him or his family. This was a very big plug into a gap I had in my Giddens line. When I got your e-mail from you "Jess", you can see why I was a little confused. I thought it was Jesse Giddens at first thought, I was wondering why he was on the Rootsweb list. I have exchange several e-mails with the brothers and a nephew since the funeral in March. The passing of Bill is sad, after I just discovered him, but on the other hand, it is a blessing that I met him and his brothers at all. One of my cousins that is deep (and smart) in Giddens genealogy had hit a stump in searching for this Giddens branch, because she was looking in Farmersville, Tx instead of Louisiana. C.P. G. Sr. was a son of John Giddens. John died and buried in Aberdeen, Miss as a Confederate soldier. in 1862. John's wife was a daughter of John Stiles, she is buried at English. I have now heard from one of Bill's nephews about the death of Bill. Thanks again. What a great list this is. Jim, You will absolutely LOVE having digital. I got my first digital about 8 yrs ago now I guess. It will change the way you do cemetery/genealogy work. I use my cameras (yes, I have 4 digitals right now) for everything from tombstones to documents in courthouses/libraries. My best camera is a Canon Digital Rebel EOS. It was my upgrade from the film Canon Rebel EOS. WOW! What a different it has made. I don't worry about what I take a picture of now...I photograph any and all allied names in a cemetery that I visit for future reference/research. In fact, I have gotten to where I photograph entire cemeteries when I have the time and the size isn't overwhelming. Using my compact digital in courthouse/library situations is great also. I don't make photo copies, I just photograph the page. If they want the copy charge that is fine, but in the end I can print them as much as I want, plus they are on my computer for emailing. My advise is to really study the camera's options on size. You DO NOT need the highest settings to get high quality photos. The size of your print is what you need to consider. A standard 3x5 photo will print out GREAT with anything over 2MB. If you want to do something like an 8x10 or bigger use the top settings. My Digital EOS only has a top rating of 6.5 MB and I know one professional photographer that uses the same camera model and at times doesn't even use the highest quality setting! You should easily get 300+ photos on a 1GB card. Actually, the type of memory card/stick can make an even bigger improvement to your performance. There are different speed memory cards. I use a high speed card like the pros use. They are little more expensive, but they last longer and the time between shots is reduced about 25%. Just have fun with it. You will find as you go that there are things you like and want in the next one. These devices are so cheap and are declining in price monthly. My first digital 8 yrs ago was about $800. It was a point and shot style with almost no zoom and maxed at 4MB. It was top of the line! Today, you can get a 10MB EOS style camera for the same price, this is a MAJOR MAJOR upgrade! Find out what you like and enjoy about the devices and upgrade in a year or two... Cameras are the genealogist's tool, they are worth every cent you pay for them... Still a little feverous about leaving my comfortable 35 mm but once I got it in my hands, I started getting excited. It is a Nikon CoolPix L5 digital/movie, 7.2 megipex, 5 optical zoom with 4 digital zoom vibration reduction and uses regular AA alkaline batteries which is something I wanted. Also makes movies but I guess digitals do that. I will probably try it out next week, too much going on right now. Jim... The only tip I would give...and I haven't read all of the others...is simple...always....always take the pictures at the highest image on your camera. Yes, you have fewer pictures, but you can enhance or crop and get great results. Also, in Saturday's Lubbock Paper is an obituary for a Giddens...here is the contents...may be one of your cuz... Sounds like Mike has some sound advice for you, but I read in a photography magazine that it takes an 8 Pixel Camera to take a photo as good as a 35 MM Camera. I have personally taken photo's with my first digi camera that had less than 3 Pixels and worked at them on my computer and made very successful enlargements of 8 X 10 portraits. That was using the Best for the setting. Actually, I think mine had stars, the more stars the best picture and less number of pictures it would take. If you take a photo and try to enlarge it too much, it will start breaking up into little squares, weird looking and not printable. Again, remember you can load them onto a disk and print them later or not at all, just store them. You can even label each photo at the bottom, this does not have to be printed on the photo, just for later reference. This is very time consuming. Your camera will have software with it to load onto your computer that will be very helpful. Melba ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

Jim, When thinking about the quality of picture you want to take, think about the final print that you want. You have a camera that takes up to 7.2 mega pixels, but you will probably never need to use that "best" setting. Look at your instructions and see how many pixels are used on each of the good, better, and best settings. You may also want to consider the final size of your picture. Generally, a 3.0 megapixel shot will put enough pixels (dots of color within a square inch) that will give you 35mm quality on a 3x5 picture. 4.5 megapixels for a 6x8, 6.0 megapixels for an 8x10. I would bet that when considering the final size and megapixels needed, that you would be able to put over a 1000 pictures on your 1GB memory card. I think you got a really good deal, considering the megapixels and the optical zoom. An optical zoom of 3 is pretty common, and the optical zoom is soooo much better than the digital. The optical zoom actually brings the shot in closer using the focusing lens, where as the digital simply takes the picture and digitally enlarges it. Digitally, the picture will fade but not always where you can visibly notice it. But it may show up when you try to enlarge it. If your having trouble with close up shots, wait a second to give it a chance to focus. Secondly, your camera will probably have a feature to lock in the intended picture before taken. Try to push the button about half-way first. There will be a light that comes on in one of the corners of your view finder, then press the button all the way. This should make close ups much clearer. I have really enjoyed my digital cameras over the years. I was told when I got my first digital camera that you should always fill your memory card because if you just keep taking 10/12 pictures and deleting them you will wear out the first part of the card and have to get a new one sooner. I don't know if this is true because I always fill mine before deleting and my cards are over 3 years old and still working and I take a lot of pictures.
