This is a good article about digital tombstone photography with several good tips: http://www.genealogyandhow.com/lib/cemeteries/digital-photography.htm Here is another one: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~historic/photographing_tombstones.h tm I have to say a little brush is a very good idea - just a soft plastic one, nothing harsh enough to damage a stone. I have also gotten a lot of use out of my pocket knife! Not the correct tool at all, but helpful for cutting grass away from sinking flat stones. A mirror really does help you read some stones. Pam
My mother told me that the roadside park on Hwy 82 was in just about the exact location of the old Robbinsville School. All the old timers called that general area Robbinsville, but there is nothing left. I remember when there were lots of houses there. There are none now. Doris, I have always had good luck with just my 35 ml camera. I understand Digital comers are better, I do not know (yet). I lot depends o the quality of the inscriptions and how it matches up with the rest of the stone. The lighting and the angle can make a difference here. If I can read it with my eyes, so can the camera for the most part. Maybe some one will have some more professional tips. Robbinsville is basically at the intersection of US 82 and CR 2106 (county road) that runs north to Bagwell This put it about 1/4 mile east of where Ward Creek run into Scatter. It is not certain to me the pin point location. I feel certain that Scatter Creek (or Ward) was their water supply. Just east of the intersection at 82 about 1/4 mile is a road side park, maybe this was the actually location. However, I have found what remains of a couple of grave marker, up CR 2106 about 1/4 to 1/2 mile, on your left (west side) about 100 feet before you reach a corral and about 50 to 80 feet from the fence in the pasture. This land is owned by ______Somerville and his wife Connie. The remains are only a base ( with a slot in it) that held the slab type marker. All the markers were carried about some years back (maybe 80). These remains is all of Robbinsville that is left that I know anything of. William Becknell is buried in a pasture about 200 feet south of US 82, about a mile or so east of the mentioned road side park. Some have referred to this cemetery as the Robbinsville Cemetery, but that is not where Robbinsville was. When the railroad came in about 2 miles north of Robbinsville, it was only a short time until the community moved to the railroad and became Bagwell. FYI: up north on the Ward Creek, Cool Creek from Bagwell runs into it. Also, Robbinsville will be about 7 miles west of Clarksville on 82. Can someone give me some tips for getting good headstone photographs? Usually, I get a picture of the headstone but not the inscriptions. Thanks Doris ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
I too recommend all the places that Cynthia named. TaMalloy's seems to be the most popular, but that are all busy. We visit TaMalloys often and also Applebee. Applebee's seems to be slow service to me but the food is good. We have started going to the Sirloin Stockade recently, it has a great variety and all you can eat Buffet. It is basically across the loop from the Fish Fry. For Chinese food, we have Golden China near Walmart and China Star on Lamar Ave about half way between the loop and downtown. We use to go to Magels on the loop behind the new Walgreen's for family type food, but have not been there lately nor to the Chinese places. Again, we are at the Fish Fry almost every Wednesday night. Frances Hamm Bachman owns the Clarksville Florist. We were talking about her dad (Hamm) running the store at Little Chicago. I talked with her about 2 weeks ago in her shop. Mrs George Skidmore use to have part ownership in the florist shop. (I am drawing a blank on her first name), but here grown children are Ronnie & Donna. I'm familar with the story but I don't have any details. I think that if there were any surviving newspapers with the story in it the Dales would have found it. As for court records I have never explored them, but I understand that they are all still there. There is probably a wealth of information on all sorts of people there. Somebody needs to do that. As I have mentioned before I have sideways connections to a lot of these families. Many of them came from the same area in Louisiana about the same time. Cynthia, I have a great grandmother in Old Shamrock. Do you have any information on Easter Alabama McGuire? I have her birth date/marriage date/death date. She was married to Joseph Davison (Davidson) in Red River Co. in 1876. He was murdered in 1886 by a man named Wiley Norman. I would like any information on any of these people. I can't find Joseph's father/mother. Any findings of recorded court preceedings/court dates/etc....?? Easter later married Abasalom Lawson Newsom. She married him about 1888. I can not find any information on either of her husbands. I have no proof, but I think Joseph Davidson was buried in the Tuggle Springs Cemetery. I cannot find a grave. I do not know where Abasalom Newsom was buried. He died in 1930 at a very old age for those times. So perhaps in your research you have come across something on one of these individuals........I sure can't find anything on them. I am coming to Clarksville in the fall. I have no idea where to look for the Joseph Davidson murder. Or where to look for the Newsom burial place. We have spoken a time or two before..........I have Malone family that lived in Bagwell back in the 1950's, we conversed on this line of my family once before. My roots are there in Red River Co. and Lamar Co. I always love to visit. I have a 1/2 sister there in Clarksville, owns Clarksville Florist.
