Hello, Anyone out there who might have information on the Sport family from Red River. I am interested in the girls Ada/Florence and Lizzie Sport. I know that they both married the same man. Joseph Thomas Jemison, Lizzie married him first and when she died he married Florence/ada. Any information is good. Ami, I have one typed page of information on L.D. Mowrey. The page says L.D. Mowery is the son of Moses Mowrey a native of Bradley County, Tenn and Margaret E *(Witt) Mowery his wife. My dad had this typed paper and handed it down to me. I have not connected Moses to my relative Mathias Mowery of the 1850s. (note the difference in the spelling. I was at a Mathias Mowery family reunion recently, Dub (W.O.) Mowery feels Mathias is related to Moses but has not been able to come up with documentation. This paper says L.D. Mowrey was born in Alabama, November 19, 1851 while his parents were on their way to Texas. It says Moses and family arrived in Red River County in 1853 and in 1870 Moses moved to Lamar County. He was a farmer, miller and ginner. Moses and wife had ten children. L.D. stands for Louis Daily Mowrey, he married Jan 20, 1870 to Mary A. Cato of Lamar County, Tx. Paper says L.D Mowrey was reared in Red River and Lamar Counties, Tx. and began the merchantile business in Milton, Tx (Lamar Co) in 1884 and established a Post Office there. This paper appears to be a copy of a statement that was written when L.D. Mowrey was in this latter years. It list L.D.'s children and they spouses. If you need those names, let me know. Bridget, 4 of the 5 cemeteries line up great, but Lone Star will be on a run by itself, or it could be part of a big circle. (This get a little long to include the details, a map would be much simpler. The Chamber of Commerce has a Red River County Map (they sponsor it) with the county road and it shows a cross here a cemetery is, but it does not list the name of the cemetery. It will be a big help) Clarksville Cemetery (Old Baptist Cemetery) is on Washington Street one block south of Main (82). If you turn south off 82 at the Dairy Queen, you will run into it. For "Old" Shamrock from Clarksville take 82 west to FM 2573 (Bagwell cutoff) and go about 1+ mile and Old Shamrock will be off on the right about 1/4 or more of a mile. I think there is a sign on the highway. It is clear pasture land (view) to the cemetery. For Bluff Cemetery continue on through to Bagwell and continue to follow FM 2573 to the west (make the 90 degree turn in Bagwell). About 3 miles (guessing) west of Bagwell look for the cemetery sign, you will turn right (north) on CR 2127. There is a sign on (FM 2573) (This is the simplest way to get to Bluff, but CR 2127 does continue to make a complexed horseshoe and comes back to FM 2753, so you may see the CR2127 sign closer to Bagwell, but wait till you come to the 2127 with the Bluff Cemetery sign, at this intersect, there is a different cemetery on the south side of FM 2127, ignore it.) You will be at the top of the horseshoe when you get to Bluff Cemetery (2 or 3 miles). Go back to FM 2127 the same way. Then continue westward to Detroit. Below is a copy and paste from Lawrence & Sue Dale's information on how to find the Detroit Cemetery which is south of Detroit. Detroit Cemetery, 3 Nov 1873,"This cemetery is located in the southwest quadrant of Red River County, Texas. GPS COORDINATES: Datum WGS84: 33 Deg 38.993N, 95 Deg 15.948W. This cemetery is located about a mile south of Detroit and a city block to the east of FM 410. Now for the big circle to Lone Star, drive south out of Detroit on FM 410 (watch out for the split in the road about 2 miles out of Detroit, be sure to stay on FM 410. Continue about 6 to 8 miles south on FM 410 until you take a left (east) to Fulbright (should be a Fulbright sign). Continue through Fulbright and staying on FM 411 about another 3 miles until you hit State Hwy 37. Turn left of northeastward on 37 toward Clarksville. Within about 4 or 5 miles you pass the Lone Star Community Methodist Church on your left and about 1/4 mile more on 37 you will see a sign for the Lone Star Cemetery, you will turn right (south) on CR 1330. The cemetery is about 2 miles south, you will not be able to miss it (on the right) (a lot of my wife's Townes family is buried here) Then back to Hwy 37 and continue northeastward on Hwy 37 to Clarksville. If you have any questions, let me know. Are you familiar with a "Junior Mullins" who lived a few miles north of Avery, Red River County back in the 1980's ? He was probably about 55 years old around in 1985. Haven't heard his name mentioned in many years. Tim N. Drew, Thank you for the info. Jim wrote me directly and has offered to give me directions, which is very kind of him.We are planning to drop into the library to look up as many plot locations as possible before heading off. I know my cemeteries are correct due to information I have obtained earlier via death certificates and queries that have been answered so kindly and quickly from this list.Since you asked, these are the names of the individuals whom I'm interested in getting pictures of their headstones (if possible). Edward West (who is reportedly the first and longest sheriff to hold office in Red River County) is one of my great-great grandfathers. I have a lot of information on that particular line of the family. The Smith line is one that has given me problems (go figure) as well as that of Milton Jasper Mullins. Hello Bridget, Jim or Tom would know for sure on the best route, but I will give my two cents... If you are coming from Paris on US 82 then - Detroit, Bluff, Old Shamrock, Lone Star and Clarksville. If you are coming from any other direction, I would do them inthe opposition order. The Detroit cemetery is just off 82, Bluff is a little outside of Bagwell, Old Shamrock is on 2573 heading south from Bagwell back to US 82, Lone Star is SW of Clarksville (I haven't been to this one) and Clarksville is just south of the square. I have walked all of these besides Lone Star, some multiple times. They are all fairly good size cemeteries. Exact directions to all the cemeteries in Red River County are on the Red River County GenWeb page. Click on the link that says, "Cemetery Index" and then click on the name of the cemetery that you want to find. A county road map might also be helpful. You could call the Chamber of Commerce at Clarksville and see if they have one that they will send you.
