I am reading about the recovery of bridge timbers from a pre-civil war bridge between Delta and Hopkins County. The team is lead by Eddie Trapp. I know we have discussed Dewey Trapp (and his brother) that operated the Red River Ferry north of Clarksville. I believe Dewey's daughter is on this list if my memory is correct. I am curious as to if this Eddie Trapp is related to Dewey? Any help? My great grandmother in Florida was named Felistis Comella Garner Curry, aka Mellie Garner. I am looking for the connection between her and John Nance Garner III who lived, I have recently discovered, in Red River County, TX. I can remember Tully Garner helping us find housing in Uvalde during WWII, but I was young and didn't pay attention to family ties. So I don't know the connection between Grandmother Curry and John Nance IV. Any suggestions? Patti F. Here is a e-mail I received as a high school group from one of my Clarksville classmates in the 50s. There will be a dedication for the "new" square this Saturday morning at 9 a.m., kicking off the Fall Bazaar, Oct 6th. I will be there and hope to see some of you guys. (Zack is Helen's grandson). As you will read, they are both very excited about the new square appearance. Jim Giddens Paris, Tx ----- Original Message ----- Sent: Thursday, October 04, 2007 6:23 AM Subject: The Square Project Good Morning, All, Well, Zach has delivered the ultimate and final word on the newly redone square. It is in his 7 year old words, "COOL." Would you believe that I stayed on the square most of the day watching the final touches being applied? I went to town 5 times and would sit and talk and watch the progress. There were so many people in town and so much activity going on that it looked like the square use to when we were all growing up. No parking places and cars circling the square constantly! One of the ladies that owns a business on the square said that she couldn't stand to stay in her store and run the business so she kept it closed most of the day because she wanted to be outside where all the action was going on. Her husband had been calling her all day, and when he finally got hold of her he wasn't too happy with her. The square is really going to be lovely and beautiful. Big maple trees have been planted all around the area, antique looking street lamps have been installed, Louisiana iris have been planted around the base of the Confederate soldier, huge round containers that are filled with bright yellow fall mums are sitting throughout, and Knock-out roses, decorative grass, and shrubs have also been planted. An underground sprinkler system was laid over a two day period, and most of the sod was laid yesterday. The sod came from a sod farm at Lydia near Avery. We had to go back last night for one last look to see the lights come on. It is such a transformation that it is almost a magical place to be at night. I think it will be even prettier at Christmas with Christmas lights in all the trees. We have Zach staying with us as Sunni and Donny have gone to M.D. Anderson for her checkup. He wanted to go down there after we picked him up from school then we could hardly get him away. We had to come home and do homework, or we probably would have stayed. Then when we got the homework done and supper over, we had to go back for one last visit. He is just as excited about it as we all are. I told our mayor, Ann Kelty Rushing, last night that we needed to have a "Saturday Night on the Square" celebration soon with a band and dancing. She agreed! Wish all of you transplanted Clarksvillians could see it. Can you tell how proud I am of it? The October meeting of the Red River County Genealogical Society will be held on Monday evening, October 8 at 7 p.m. This month, the group will meet at the Old Church Theater, on West Main in Clarksville. The speaker will be Liz Covington, who will come in the person of Mary Donoho, of the well known Donoho family of Clarksville. Mary's life was chronicled in the book, "Mary Donoho -- New First Lady of the Santa Fe Trail", by Marian Meyer, written in 1991. Mary and her husband, William Donoho crossed the Santa Fe Trail in 1833 with their young nine-month old child. The couple became innkeepers at Santa Fe. Mary was the first Anglo woman to cross the trail, predating the next known woman who crossed the trail by 14 years. She was 25 years of age at the time, and the Donohos had two more children while there, thus giving them the added distinction of having the first two Anglo children born in Santa Fe. The family remained in Santa Fe until 1837, the year of the infamous Perez Rebellion. Soon the family moved eastward and settled in Clarksville,Texas, where they continued their profession as innkeepers. The well known Donoho Hotel was a fixture on Clarksville's square for many years. Mary died in 1880, the same year that the Santa Fe Trail closed. She and her husband are buried in the Clarksville Cemetery. Ms. Covington has done much research and study on Mary Donoho and will be portraying her in the October 8 program. Clarksville is fortunate to have such a notable woman as part of the town's history, and her portrayal will be an event that everyone who has an interest in the area's history will not want to miss. Although no admission fee will be charged, the society will accept donations to go toward Ms Covington's expenses.
I learned today that a graduate of Clarksville High (Red River Co) has a florist shop in Dallas and will be doing the Jenna Bush wedding. His mother's maiden name is Duren from Hopewell. Having learned this, I don't know where or when the wedding is but the mother said she was going. The mother was embarrassed when she drew a blank when asked what the name of her son's shop in Dallas was. When I find out, I will let you know. I did not talk with the mother, this is from a mutual friend of ours, but you can take it to the bank. Jim Giddens Paris, Tx
This is indeed the same folks! How exciting! Al is there in Clarksville right now and took a picture of the sign that says "Little Chicago." "Everything has changed and yet nothing has changed" is how he described it. He found his old home place (135 acres) where someone has built a brick house on top of the old frame house. He's staying there if you want to contact him, looking for a place to rent. --MaryK> From: samples@1starnet.com> To: jimgidd@suddenlink.net; txredriv@rootsweb.com> Date: Sat, 22 Sep 2007 15:56:10 -0500> Subject: Re: [TXREDRIV] [TXREDRIV Returning to roots// rambling> > I vaguely remember a Gray family that lived in the Mabry community (aka > little Chicago) for a while in the 50s. This reminds me of a picture I took about 2 years ago. Driving west from Fulbright toward FM 410. I came to the T in the road. There is a sign there on FM 411 as you approach FM 410. Rugby to the left and Detroit to the right. Thing is, on this single post sign, one of the two bolts had broken out and the sign had swung down. It hangs there horizontal, but it is upside down so the arrows are pointing in the wrong direction. There are weeds around it and a deserted house in the background. Seemed a sign of the times for our small rural communities. I drove that route again recently and the sign has been repaired, I am glad to say. Glad I got a picture of it for my collection of "back road" pictures. Yes, there are a lot of fine brick homes up and down the FM roads and on the County Roads. Drive down those black top roads that are in need of repair, you will be surprised at the fine homes you will find. It is a mixture of the old and the new. Good luck to Al in his search for a place to rent. If there is anyway I could help him, I am in the phone book. Royce D. Hammett I have pasted the Hammett obit of the Paris news for more than one reason. I know the Hammett name has been discussed by this board. At first I thought he may be Doyle Hammett that I remember in Clarksville as a teen that was about 3 years older than me. (I am 66) As it turns out, Doyle preceded this brother in death. No body I knew (except maybe a teacher and parents) called him Doyle, we all called him "Supee Duck (for Super ducktails). I have often described him as looking a lot like Fonzie on Happy Days. Supee however did always have a pack of cigarettes rolled up in his T-shirt. I did not remember Supee had died until reading this. Supee did live as a teen on our hill (Rose Hill), actually W. College Ave. Many people back then referred to W College as Rose Hill. If anyone knows of Supee, I would like to know where he was living, when he died etc. Jim G +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ CLARKSVILLE - Royce D.
