    1. [TXREDRIV] DeKalb vs Clarksville (not genealogy)
    2. Jim Giddens
    3. (more rambling, not genealogy, delete if not interested) Mary of DeKalb, After seeing the name "DeKalb" 3 or 4 times, I can not resist rambling a little. I relived regular in my mind, back in the fall of 1958 when Clarksville Tigers played DeKalb in football in Clarksville. I was a senior starter for the Tigers. Final score DeKalb 22 Clarksville 18. This was a tough lose with DeKalb scoring the winning points on 4th down and goal from our two yard line. Con Ashley(spell?) scored the two yard touchdown with a quick pitch out around their left end. DeKalb was suppose to run over us and we were behind 16 to 0 after the first quarter of the game. We had scored the go ahead touchdown with about 2 minutes left in the game to 18-16. We where so excited. It had been predicted that we would be beat bad. Then disaster struck by DeKalb getting a 80 yard pass play down to our 8 yard line with Jerry Ward making the tackle. Then after 4th down, it was over. It is a fact that the game should have been over about one minutes before DeKalb scored. James E, of Clarksville was running the game clock, but got so excited he forgot to run the clock toward the end of the game. I did not realize from the field as a player that the clock was not running (we were all excited) but I clearly remember looking over to the side line during this time and seeing one of our coaches, R.G. Burris looking up at the press box and passionately giving the "Run the Clock" sign (winding your arm like a clock) to the time keeper. Guess the time keeper was not looking at him. James E was so distraught that he never ran the clock again for a game. I felt sorry for him. Back in my school days, Clarksville Tigers and the DeKalb Bears were great rivals. Maybe that has changed today due to change in districts etc. I did get pleasure attending a game with the Tigers beating DeKalb at home about 3 or 4 years ago. It was a most exciting game also. I still have my ticket and even wrote a letter to the Editor of the Times about what I have just rambled about. It was printed in the Times. I felt a little awkward in the 1970s when we lived in Avery and my son played pee-wee football for a team in DeKalb (Avery does not play football). I even wound up being asked to be a assistant coach for the team and I did. I was also interesting when we played a Clarksville team and a old team mate of mine, Bill Petty, was coaching the Clarksville team. I did enjoy making friends with the guys from DeKalb and learned they did not have horns from they head. 3. My apologies for my answer to Cathy going to the list. I thought reply would just go to the writer, and that reply all would go to the list. I certainly don't want to start a fire storm. 3. I agree with my cousin, Doris, who wrote the message below. One of our FLOYD gr.gr. Uncles, went to Red River Co. after the Civil War. Mr. Giddens has been very helpful and is very knowledgeable of the history in that area. Doris and I both live in East TN, and without the help of Jim Giddens and others such as Tom Trissell, we would not have found our gr.gr.grandfather's brother and his family. Through the efforts of kind persons such as Jim and Tom, we have met a descendant, who is our cousin, and lives in Denton, who has filled in a lot of our blanks in that side of the family. So, thank you Jim and Tom for all your help. 1. [TXREDRIV] Subject Line
    2. Just a suggestion, I have deleted each and everyone of the emails with the subject line Trapp from Red River Co as I thought that was the subject. Tonight I wondered why so many people were writing about Trapp family and did clk on one of them just to see apparantly someone said something disrespectful to or about Jim. Well, since I haven't opened them, I don't know what it was. I will say over the years of reading and exchanging post with Jim, not knowing what the differences is, I will defend Jim. Whatever it was I know Jim has always tried to be helpful to all and welcome all to the list. He manages to keep the Red River List active better than any of us. But, PLEASE folks, change the subject line on your emails. You can still use Reply button, just change the subject line before you hit send as I just did to send this. 3. I think it is great that 80 year young Neva is on the computer with us. I hope when I am 80, I can even find my computer. Thankful Neva has family that cares for her. I am sure Neva could teach us all a lot. This is a experience that we should all learn from. All works for the Good. Jim G I respectfully agree, that is the last word for me and the list on this subject. ----- Original Message ----- From: <fma.root@tds.net> To: <txredriv@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 17, 2007 7:15 PM Subject: Re: [TXREDRIV] Trapp from Red River Co ?? > OK, time for me to step in & hold up my hands. 2. OK, time for me to step in & hold up my hands. First, MGShelby is my cousin & was raised in RR county too. She knows a lot, and like most of you, is sensitive when her family is involved. And second, Neva is My MOM. She's 80 years old, with the memory of, well, I don't know what... She remembers everything. She was raised in RR county too. And I know she's embarrassed to death about this. Let's drop it....thank you.... I think everybody who's feathers are ruffled, needs to step back & take a breath. This was a personal email, sent by mistake, and not intended for the list on a whole. Can you tell me that NOBODY'S ever said "who is that person, and why do they think they know so much?" about anyone? No one's ever said anything that they might have found embarrassing, if the person they were talking about, knew it? I appreciate Jim, yes, thank you, because he went to McKenzie Cemetery to try to find some info for me several weeks ago. He also gave me the email of the Dales to contact for further info. I don't believe he ever said he was the Know-All, Be-All of Red River county, but he does know a lot & knows who to contact to find out more. And Jim, thank you for responding as graciously as you did. I'd appreciate it greatly if this subject were ended. It threatens to turn into something ugly & I don't think that's what this list is about. You all are nicer people than that, I know. 3. Jim, I have always appreciated your "ramblings"; they make Red River County TX come alive. I wish there were more like you, Sam, Sharon, & 2 or 3 others that have the love & knowledge of that area. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim Giddens" <jimgidd@suddenlink.net> To: <txredriv@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 17, 2007 3:09 PM Subject: [TXREDRIV] Trapp from Red River Co ?? rambling > (I got to rambling some, so delete if not interested) > > Wow, I am surprised as the reaction to the e-mail. > At first, I thought it would not be proper for me to defend myself and > just > not respond. 1. [TXREDRIV] Trapp from Red River Co ?? rambling
    2. Jim Giddens
    3. (I got to rambling some, so delete if not interested) Wow, I am surprised as the reaction to the e-mail. At first, I thought it would not be proper for me to defend myself and just not respond. (I actually got a laugh out of it) I did think it would mean more & accepted better from a couple of you. Now today I come back and see all the response that is favorable to me and it does make me think I am helpful, this is my reward. I have never charged one cent to anyone for helping them even when I go to a cemetery, take picture, print them, and mail by snail-mail to them. I have a time or two told someone that if the expense got too large, I would accept what they would offer, I have never asked for or accepted any payment of any kind. I have had people to tell me I should write a book. This is something I would love to do, but will probably never get around to it. If I ever write a book, it will be about my Giddens family history from 1797 in N.C. to Ky, to ILL, then to Texas in 1833 and through the 1900s in Red River County, Tx. I can not to say I always have everything exactly right on this list, but it is close enough to get the ball rolling correctly with the help of all of you.. Often I am posting something of interest to Red River County that I think may be interesting to others and maybe others can and will share their knowledge, or correct me if needed. (Sort of like talking over the fence to your neighbor) This keeps the board a little active and not dead. I am feeling sympathy for Neva because I have been in her shoes once or twice in the early years of e-mail. I am sure she is a kind woman and maybe only getting her feet wet in e-mailing etc. We all learn from our experiences. I know she did not mean to send it to the list and I am sure Marilyn would have (and did) discuss it with her and Neva would have a different thinking of me within a few hours or days (I hope). As has been said, I have learned that I had best not say anything in a e-mail that I would not want to be made public. Sometimes such a e-mail will be forwarded to a public list or group even when you sent it only to one individual. "I believe Dewey's daughter is on this list if my memory is correct." We see my memory was not correct even about Dewey having a daughter, but a niece. I think Neva was concerned that I did not have the Trapp genealogy exactly correct. It is important for it to be correct, that is why I said, "believe" and "if my memory is correct". I did not think it was necessary for me to spend two or three hours of searching my files when I knew the relative could correct me if I was not correct, as I would hope for and expect. "Who knows what he does with the information." This one got a laugh out of me. It implies I am compiling information for some sort of self gain. I just say only that one must be a new comer to the list to think this, but yes, we are a unusual board that enjoys sharing with and helping each other. I am retired and this is my hobby. My wife has chronic rheumatoid arthritis that limits us (or her) traveling. Red River County is about as far as I desire to travel anyway, so that is a blessing. I spend a large amount of time in Red River County researching, taking pictures, visiting with family, friends and strangers, always asking questions and learning something that is interesting to me and may be helpful to someone else in the future. Again, I have been in Neva's shoes myself, and understand that I need to learn from my mistakes and continue on. The person that never makes a mistake is the person that does nothing. I hope Neva and William continue to be active on the list. I greatly appreciate the support of everyone, this has been a blessing in disguise to me. Thank you Neva. Jim Giddens Paris (Reno), Tx 13 miles from Red River County. Raised in Red River County, family came to RR Co in 1833. Member Red River County Genealogy Society, Red River County Historical Society, Friends of Red River County Library, American Legion post 45 in Clarksville, Stone Chapel Cemetery Association etc etc.
