    1. [TXREDRIV] News from Red River Co.
    2. Jim Giddens
    3. (more news from Red River Co. this is a pasted e-mail from a friend of mine in Clarksville to our high school group. Some of us have already contacted the Paris News and the State Rep here in Paris, Mark Homer) Helen's daughter is a office worker at the Clarksville Wal-Mart. Jim G ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Wal Mart officials came into the Clarksville store this morning and informed them that they were closing the store on Dec. 3l. Needless to say the whole town is in shock. The reasons that they gave were that they weren't making any money here, the man that owns the store does not want to renew their lease, and that they drove around town and looked at the town and decided because of the town going down and losing population that they did not want to invest any more time and money in this area. Sunni Beth is not sure what she will do. They are offering a severance package, but if she takes it her cancer will be considered as preexisting, and she will not have any coverage after going back to work for a year. Eddie said, "Well, they closed down our little town and square and now they are going to go off and leave us with nothing!" With gas so expensive it is going to be a hardship for people to go to Paris or Idabel for every little thing, and of course, the elderly used that pharmacy at Wal Mart a lot too. It's a sad day here for our little town. Helen

    1. [TXREDRIV] More Bears ( in Red River Co) not genealogy
    2. Jim Giddens
    3. (things are quiet, so) Though you guys might like to hear this current story in Red River Co. E.P. is Eddie Pryor M.L. is Marion Lowe The 3 of us played football together in the 50s. Dimple Mall is a convenient store on Hwy 37 north of Clarksville a few miles were some of the guys have breakfast at 6 a.m. (not me). Jack Atkins was a classmate of mine and is a doctor in Huntsville, Tx (no, he is not connected to the prison in any way) Jim G ----- Original Message ----- Sent: Tuesday, October 30, 2007 7:17 PM Subject: More Bears Well, the bears just keep popping up. Me and The Trapper were down at the Dimple Mall a day or two ago and Craig Frazier showed us some pictures of bear tracks he had made on Jack Atkins ranch at Ackworth, (Craig works for the Texas Forrest Service). He is supposed to email me some of the pictures and I will forward them. Then, Saturday night Justin Stringer and his wife brought their kids by trick or treating. Justin said that he was up on 1159 about where you turn to go to ML's deer cabin. A black guy he knew was stopped there on his 4 wheeler. Justin asked him what he was doing and he said he had been watching a bear. Justin said he started teasing the guy about thinking he had seen a bear when the the guy said "There he is again." Justin said he looked up and sure enough there was a big black bear just ambling across the highway. He said this bear on all fours was waist high on him. Justin is probably 6'2" so this was a big bear. ML also has at least 3 bear stories if we can get him to unlimber his typing fingers. We have to remember that ML is a shy boy. But maybe he will do it. EP -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- No virus found in this incoming message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. 3. Jim, I guess I'm only a few miles north of Sheila here in Lakewood. And she's sure right about the smoke. It seems to be coming from just about every direction except the Pacific Ocean. It's been so heavy today, it looks like a fog....and dropping ash all over us. I can't complain though, there are an awful lot of folks out here in much worse shape but it's been a scary couple of days out here. We certainly appreciate your concern and prayers. They tell us that the winds will die down in the next 24 hours and the temps will drop into the 70's.....it sure cant be soon enough for any of us. I've been here in SoCal for well over 40 years and I've never seen anything on this scale or with this many people having to evacuate their homes. It's sad. 3. Thought is would be interesting to people connected to Red River Co It is about the 3rd e-mail update I have received through our Clarksville high school e-mail group. Shelia is Shelia Gamble graduate of CHS in 1960. Patsy was Patsy Petty and Lloyd is her brother Lloyd Petty. They all live in the area of the fires. Sheila calls now after being off e-mail due to serious health problems. Say a prayer for them please. Jim G Subject: Sheila Just got through talking to Sheila by phone. She is still at home and thinks right now that her home is out of any apparent danger. She said that the fires were about 3-4 miles from her house but thought that the fire fighters had the Irvine fire contained as of now. Her biggest problem has been the smoke. She is staying in the house with all windows and doors closed running the air conditioner. With her health problems she doesn't need to be breathing any of this junk in. She said that she went outside yesterday with some of her neighbors, and that they couldn't even see the sun for all the smoke and ash in the air. Brenda and Lloyd are in big trouble in their area though. They are packed and ready to leave but the highways in San Diego are jammed with traffic. Something like a half a million people have the freeways congested. If they are forced to leave they will go to friends at Riverside then will probably go on from there to Patsy and Roger's. Sheila said that she would call if things got worse, and she would keep us posted on Brenda and Lloyd also. Helen --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    3. I have been to Rosalie, a community east of Bogata a few short miles. Not aware of Ione. The mention of "could that be Annona" is interesting. I have read that Annona was named for the daughter of a Indian Chief. I wonder it her name was actually Ione. UMMMM. Maybe not. The first name that popped into my name was Irion County, on the west side of Tom Green County (San Angelo), but that would be a stretch. 3. Steve may be right ... see the reference to Clarksville in Gene's query. An excellent place to alway begin is with The Handbook of Texas online ..... http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/ Found no listing for Ione. Also check out the early post offices for Red River Co - same results. http://www.rootsweb.com/~txredriv/postoffices.html Trevia Wooster Beverly Houston, Texas ANNONA, TEXAS. Annona is on the Missouri Pacific Railroad and U.S. Highway 82 eight miles southeast of Clarksville in eastern Red River County. It was established in the early 1870s on the proposed route of the railroad. When the post office was moved from nearby Savannah in 1874 the new town was called Walker Station, in honor of G. W. Walker, founder of the town and first postmaster. In 1884, at Walker's suggestion, the name was changed to Annona, the name of an Indian girl. After the completion of the railroad in 1876 the town grew rapidly. In 1881 a correspondent of the Clarksville Standard called Annona "the most important trading point in the county outside of Clarksville." In 1890 the community had three churches, a school, two gins, two mills, a machine shop, and a population of 250. By 1914 the population had grown to 600, and the town had added two small banks and a newspaper, the Annona News, published by C. R. Floyd. The population of Annona had fallen to around 500 by 1926, but in the late 1920s the town began to grow again. By 1929 the population was estimated at 800. Annona was incorporated around this time. In 1931 the population was 426, and it remained fairly stable after that. The number of businesses in Annona fell from twenty in 1931 to six in 1986. In 1984 Annona's businesses included two feed stores, a packaging and processing plant, and a cattle company. The population in 1990 was 329. By 2000 the population was 282. ----- Original Message ----- From: "steve harris" <steveharris1@hotmail.com> To: <txredriv@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 22, 2007 8:00 PM Subject: Re: [TXREDRIV] Ione > I'm late to the discussion, but could Iona mean Annona? > Steve > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Gene Phillips" <okienms@telepath.com> > To: <txredriv@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Monday, October 22, 2007 7:30 PM > Subject: Re: [TXREDRIV] Ione > > > > It'a apparent if Ione was in Red River county, it no longer exists. 2. There is a Ioni, Texas: IONI, TEXAS (Palo Pinto County). Ioni (Ione), on Ioni Creek, is a rural community in a valley of the Palo Pinto Mountains on State Highway 16 and U.S. Highway 180 in western Palo Pinto County. The community was probably named for the nearby Ioni Falls or for the Ioni Indians who inhabited the area in the mid-nineteenth century. Pioneer rancher and surveyor J. J. Metcalf and his son William were probably the first settlers of the community. The 1936 county highway map indicated a number of scattered residences, one business, and a cemetery at the site. In 1950 Ioni residents lived in scattered ranches and small farms. ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
