I drove by the Becknell area on my way to Clarksville and back to Paris Sunday afternoon. I was not looking for the actually marker but I did look to see if the step latter I placed over the fence was still there at the closest place to the marker. It is still there and to my surprise, a trail has been worn around the latter. Seems several must have walked the path. I feel certain the marker is still there but the weeds are up and I was not looking for it. It is on the south side of US 82 about 100 yards It is difficult to see from the highway because it is facing the west so from the closest point on the hwy (US 82) you are looking at the side edge of the monument. Approaching from the west, some time you can see it if from about 1/4 miles distant, you look across the creek (low area) about 100 yards to the small grove of trees, just to the west of the small grove are about 4 or 5 small trees, and if it is in the afternoon, you may can locate it easier because the Sun will lighten up the west side surface of the monument. It is about 3 ft wide and maybe 5 ft tall. These are the only trees in the pasture, the rest of the pasture is weeds. I have taken several picture of the monument and the few remaining markers I could find. If anyone want to see them, I can e-mail them to you or maybe Cynthia can add them to the web-site if she thinks there is enough interest. Jim G p.s. I hope he was not look where the historical marker and the old Becknell house is or looking where the old house use to set until around the 1960s when it was moved from a area on the north side of US 82 and about 1/2 mile back west from the monument. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cynthia Samples" <samples@1starnet.com> To: <TXREDRIV-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, November 20, 2007 11:48 AM Subject: [TXREDRIV] Becknell Marker > Hey, Jim or Tom or anybody that can help me. Hey, Jim or Tom or anybody that can help me. I have been corresponding with a man in Georgetown, TX, who is obsessed with seeing the monument for Captain William Becknell. He is not a descendant but he says he is writing a paper. I gave him explicit directions, he drove down there and said he couldn't find it. I have seen it many times so I didn't know what his problem was. You can normally see it from Hwy 82 if you are looking the right way(and not driving) or from CR 1290. Yesterday I drove down there and I couldn't find it either. The place is grown up so badly that it could have weeds that are as high as the marker all around it. I didn't walk out there, because I wasn't prepared to do that and I was by myself. He questioned me about "could it have been removed". I think if anything like that had happened some of us would have heard about it. Has anybody seen it in the last few months? Any clues anybody could give me would be appreciated. We have the gps coordinates, thanks to Lawrence Dale, but I don't have a gps receiver. I don't know who owns the land now. Cynthia
I was in Clarksville last Sun. and, as usual, visited my Gparents, Monroe and Ruth Cornett, grave site in Fairview. There is a grave, just above their marker and beside Lindsey McAllister's that is new. It has the metal ,temporary, marker but no info.. I was hoping someone might know something about this. The burial must have been in the last 6 months. I just drove up there for the morning (my roots were calling me home). The leaves were beginning to turn, some were on the roads-BEAUTIFUL!! Does anyone know who owns The Hart's Bluff Ranch, located near Cuthand, in the Sulfur River bottoms. I believe we may have relatives buried near Annona. Can anyone tell me the close cemeteries to that community? Wonder if it has been recorded and is on the internet? We have 3 Thomas graves that should be in this area in 1880s. Thanks very much for any information on this community. Lavonne in Oklahoma
RRCoGenSoc meeting tonight 7 p.m. in library (genealogy room) in Clarksville. Sorry I will not be able to make it, again. It is 2 blocks north of the square on Walnut Street, just before you get to the Post Office and the Courthouse. Walnut is a one way, the wrong way from the square. Go up Locust about 3 blocks and then over one block to the west to hit Walnut. I have notes I took when Lynn Titus came to speak to the genealogy society on Apr 14, 2003 on the James Titus Family History. It was most interesting (back to 1600s in England) then and I know that Monday will be so much more so. Hope I can make it. My colander says Monday is the 12th and not the 13th, which was in the Times. Anyway, I took a hold page of notes that night. (a little rambling now, so delete if not interested) Every time I hear the name Lynn Titus, my immediate thought is Lynn Holder. Lynn Holder is from Avery and I first met him at Paris Junior College in 1959. I bet there is a connection because there are Holder's buried at Savannah Cemetery as is Titus. Due to Lynn Titus's talk in 2003, I went to Savannah Cemetery (only a few miles from Avery) and made some notes and took pictures. Seems I remember Lynn in 2003 speak of confusion in the name. Now I am confused. I do not see James Titus listed on this Cemetery site and I do not have him in my notes, but he must be there somewhere. I took a picture of Andrew Titus's marker that Cynthia posted on the site. If I read my notes right, Andrew is a son of James. I am certain Lynn came give the correct answer. Now I a think I recall a conversation of James Titus being buried elsewhere, maybe Titus Co?. Sue hope I can be there Monday night to let Lynn set me straight. There was a Myrtle Titus (I think Myrtle is correct but I could be wrong), she worked for the Moore's in their grocery story in Avery when I had the drug store there in the 1970s. She told me she was related to me some how, my guess is it was through my Watson line and not the Titus. Hope to see some of you Monday night but I have been having trouble making the meetings lately.
