I do not remember who requested a picture of the Indian Paint Brush. I have found one taken by a friend. Notify me mnglenn@the-i.net and I will forward it to you. These are wild flowers in Texas and are seen in the spring along the road sides and medians, as well as the meadows. Mary/Aransas Pass/TX
Thanks so much for the kind words. Without taking the space to explain, they have had a problem or two besides the stones themselves, and it has really been a trip, but it seems I do everything the hard way. Again Jim, I thank you for your concern. They thought they had them all before, but another showed up. They put a stint in today in Paris to give me, but I am going to Dallas to have it removed. The reason is the size of the thing, and they have been doing the work so far. I'll keep every informed, but this one slipped up on me at night, and I didn't have time to even turn my comp. off. Thanks again, Sam ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim Giddens" <jimg@cox-internet.com> To: <TXREDRIV-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, February 14, 2003 7:10 PM Subject: Re: [TXREDRIV] Sam in hsopital > > Sam, > What a poor excuse to not talking on the phone. The book Red River Dust has several accounts of steamboats in the Red River County of the Red River. It has a list of how many bales of cotton each boat had on board. He also said the Great Raft (Red River log jam has existed for hundreds of years but was only in the Shreveport area for about 50 miles. That was not my understanding, but I am sure he is much more knowledgeable in this than I am. Peggy, mostly be sure to not speed through Reno if you go east of Paris. Thanks John for the update, Maybe Peggy and husband can see him in Dallas. Jim G ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mary N. Have just visited Sam at St. Joseph's and found him in good spirits. His new round of stones will not be dealt with in Paris. He is seeking an appointment for surgery at Presbyterian in Dallas.
Jim, Thank you. I already sent an email to Mr. Tolman. Appreciate you looking up the address. I am very interested in the steamboats of that era, and what was happening during that time frame. I was aware the steamboats were operating, but had no idea there were that many. I had also read of the flood. You all were fortunate to have him as your speaker. I found Keith Tolman of Fort Towson, Ok on the Yahoo search. phone 580-873-9243 e-mail: k_tolman@yahoo.com Keith said steamboats finally were able to go as far as Preston Bend which is where Lake Texoma is now. They do not yet know the name of the steamboat in the river. It is not the Caddo as thought earlier. The Upper Red River as anywhere from Shreveport, La northward. There were as many as 250 steamboats to travel the upper Red. The last one was 1926 if I read my notes correctly. "The" steamboat in the river was/is 140 ft long and 27 feet wide but the with was expanded to 43 ft wide with support beams (I forgot what he called that process to make the boat wider that it really was). All the artifact were taken off the ship when it first sank. The water it is in now is about 12 deep. The bow is in the sand under the water. The stern is above water. I just called the hospital and they said he was in room 419 (St Joseph in Paris) They rang his room and I talked to his wife. He is having kidney stones trouble again. Has been in hospital since Wednesday. Now waiting for doctor to arrive today and do surgery or some kind of procedure to rid him of the stones. She said Sam was not doing very good and did not offer to put him on the phone. I assume this means he was in too much pain or maybe he is knocked out. Maybe I will get a chance to visit him in the hospital. Jim Giddens Paris, Tx
Jim, thanks for the report on the speech by Keith Tolman. I only wished I could be there to hear what he had to say. I am very interested in knowing about the boat. Gloria and all, You are right. I just now called Sam's house and got a answering machine. I left a message for him to call me or reply to the board. I hope he is just out for breakfast. John, I did stop at the bakery shop in Bogata Tuesday morning you told me about. I was too early for you, but I thought maybe I would be lucky that day. The coffee and donut was very good. The genealogy meeting i Clarksville Monday night was very good. A Mr Keith Tolman from Ft Towson talked to us about the steamboat that was rediscovered in the Red River a couple of years ago. He is one of the divers and is a citizen of Ft Towson. He gave a good talk on the history of steamboats in general plus details of their research on the specific boat in the Red River.. The boat probably sank in 1838 and then the flood of 1843 caused the river to move and the boat was lost and just forgot about. Hi Joe; I sure can relate to your Salt Lake City weather. I lived in Tooella in 1964 and worked for a short period of time at the Army Depot there before I transferred to the depot in Granite City, ILL. We had a 18" snow before Armed Forces day. At least it was dry powder and was easy shoveling the driveway out. Yeah, I know, they closed the 'depot' back in the 70s when I was in Germany and tried to transfer my state side reemployment back to Utah. I sure am glad that I won that fight.
