    3. I would guess your frozen pond was around Christmas of 1983. I was stationed in Key West FL in the Navy at the time. I left Key West and 70 deg weather a few days before Christmas. I got to Dallas just after midnight in the middle of an ice storm. I-35W was a solid sheet of ice. Fortunately there was no one on the road but me. That is until the bars closed at 2am. Then cars started coming from everywhere and running off the roads. I found a Denny's and waited until they all either got home or towed off. It was snowing when I got to Oklahoma City. It snowed nearly every day and the temp stayed below freezing my whole 10 day visit there. 3. If anyone is in need of a scanner, I see in today's Paris News that "Big Lots" has a Mustek 48 bit Scanner on sale for $39.99 (reg $59.99). It says 600 x 1200 dpi, USB interface. The picture shows it with one big button and 4 smaller ones. It also says Microsoft Windows 98/2000/XP. I don't know how good a scanner this is, but it sure looks cheap to me and thought I would just pass it alone to anyone than may be interested. Jim Giddens Paris, Tx

    3. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!! Yes, it's very cold and slippery! I haven't left the house in two days! Well, except to feed the animals. The thing is, the boys have been out of school since Monday. Seems Fannindel Elementary had a gas leak! Right, that's what they told the radio station, but I know it was a skunk! Well, 6 skunks to be exact! I guess you could call it skunk gas! I've smelled the odor a couple of times when I dropped the boys off at school. But last week, they carried all the kids to the high school on Wednesday, then closed the school on Thursday. Grades 3 through 6 went on a field trip all day Friday, and they carried the little guys to the high school again. The boys came home with a note that there was no school on Monday, due to "construction", and classes would commence at 10:00 am Tuesday. Yea, I guess they had to reconstruct the underpinning where they tore it out to get rid of the skunk family! Big surprise! Now with the weather, the boys are going plum crazy with cabin fever. I let them out a couple of times yesterday to play, but only for about 15 to 20 minutes, and no argument from them when I called them in to hot chocolate. But today it's just solid ice, and it's hard and sharp, so boys are confined. I'm writing this so you guys can witness my last moments of sanity...my boys are going crazy, and they're taking me with them!!! 3. Yes we got about 4 inches of sleet Monday night. I did not drive into Paris (I am in Reno on the east edge of Paris) but I did leave about 8 a.m. and drove to Pittsburg. There were very few drivers on US 82 in Reno. It was solid packed sleet on the roads. I decided to drive my son's van because it is "All-Wheel" drive. I had no real trouble but I drove about 20 to 40 mph until I got past Bogata and almost to Talco. At that point the road began to be clear. By the time I got to Mt Pleasant, all was well. There was in that area ice on the trees etc, but the roads must have been warm enough to melt the lesser amount to ice. They did have a little snow and rain mixed. +++ I just got up to look outside, I saw yesterdays Paris News in the yard, I went out to get it and thought I was going to break my neck (actually my back was my main concern). The sleet is not extremely frozen hard and slick as ICE. My yard and sidewalk slopes to the front. I was sliding as I approached my paper. I could not get back up the side walk for my feet almost sliding out from under me. I bent over and took off my rubber sole house shoes and in my sock feet was able to walk back up the walk to my front porch. I hope now one had a video camera on me.+++ I am glad I don't need to get out his morning. Maybe it will melt down my tomorrow. Jim Giddens Paris/Reno, Tx p.s. I have had my son's fan for 2 years because he was not allowed to take it to Okinawa. 1. [TXREDRIV] Fire at Cherry
    2. Jim Giddens
    3. The Paris News has on today's front page a picture of a house burning Saturday with only the chimney still standing. It is a 98 year old house belong to Ted Grant in the Cherry Community (Stones Chapel Cemetery area). The house was built by the grandfather of Te, Walter Grant on a $400 loan. Ted was out of town at the time of the fire. Great grand daughter Debbie Grant found Walter Grant's double-barrel shot gun in the smoldering ash later Saturday. I guess the gun was all that was recovered. It is intact, but the wood stock is burned away. I only about 2 weeks ago bought a fire proof box to put my most historical genealogy pictures and papers in. It is sad how much history may have burned in the fire. Ted is owner of Ted & Beth's restaurant in Clarksville. I checked the Paris News web-site, but it is not there at this time at least. He house is on FM 2283. Jim Giddens

    2. Jim Giddens
    3. This is Jim G, I am forwarding a e-mail (from a first cousin of mine, George Giddens) I received (a group e-mail to the high school class). I cut out the first paragraph because it was about the snow storm. He lives in Fredericksburg, Va. He is a retired Air Force (full) Colonel. Was base commander of at least 4 bases, was at the pentageon the last 2 or 3 years of his military carrear after being picked by Gen Swartzhcof (spell) to be part of his team in and during the Persian Gulf War. Before that the was base commander of the Air Force base near Tampa Bay. During Viet-Nam he was a navigator in a two seater fighter bomber flying many combant missions. I thought you may be interested in his comment on the military sistutation today. One of our classmates had asked for his thoughts. Jim Giddens Paris, Tx _______________________________________________________________________________________ War with Iraq: I don't look forward to it, even though I think it the best decision. However, if it goes badly (for example, a Scud w/ chemical agents is launched at Israel and they retaliate w/ a glowing sunrise in Baghdad), we (the U.S) will suffer a big setback internationally. I think that the war could be relatively quick and clean (if one can use that description about blowing up things and people). There is a lot of rhetoric in the Arab world about unity and solidarity against the war, but in the end, there will be a lot of governments and people glad to see Saddam gone. A lot of people don't see why Iraq and point to North Korea as a greater threat. There is not much we can do about North Korea (ed. note: all Koreans avoid use of north and south--PDRK and ROK are their official names--because they all long for reunification of their country). Why? Because a million man army and tons of weaponry are too close to Seoul to do much about a NK incursion w/o lighting up the place pre emptively with nukes. That seems a very unlikely scenario, and it is hopeful that China can convince NK that we (the U.S.) are not about to do something foolish, but that the nuclear card may be our only option if they (NK) invade the south. But we can keep keep Iraq from becoming as formidable as NK. We have a good start on the conventional forces by the Gulf war earlier. What about the Al Queda link to Iraq? Intelligence probably has credible evidence, but it almost seems irrelavant. Two questions: (1) Does Saddam have acces to NBC weapons? Is it feasible to believe that he would sell/give them to terrorist organizations? Given that the answers to both are a reasonable "Yes", it seems prudent to remove him as a source. Certainly if there were a Democratic Republic of Al Queda, we would long since have hammered it with the might of our military, political, and economic hardware. We just can't pinpoint where to place the cross hairs on the operation a lot of the time. Well, I thought I could make this short. Forgive the soapbox. I trust that whatever course we take, the American people will rally behind the fighting forces and the decision makers enough to get the job done. If a diplomatic solution can be worked out, 98% of those deployed troops will be glad to return home without firing a shot or dropping a bomb. george

    3. In 1875, William H. Addison a native of KY, and his second wife, Abigail Vickery Addison moved from Carroll County, MO to Red River county, TX. It appears that his oldest son, James A. Addison was already living in the County. Researching descendants of the following: James A. Addison, son of William H. and his first wife, Malinda (deceased) , married Matilda Blackwell in Lamar County in 1880. Josephine Addison, known to be a sister of above James, married J. C. Miller in 1877 in Lamar County. I have death certificate for her dated 1927. Marcella Addison, known to be sister of above, married C.H. Davis in Lamar County in 1878. Nancy A. Addison, also known to be a sister of above, married William Corn in Lamar County in 1876. Other Addison's are listed as marrying in Lamar County ca. 1880-1886, indicating possible relatives. William H., his wife and only child, Robert P., moved back to MO in about 1885. Although most marriages occurred in Lamar County, some of these were known to live in Red River County. Any information on desendants would be appreciated. Verl W. Addison

    1. [TXREDRIV] Florida State Library Petition
    2. This is straight out of the Ancesty.com Newsletter... ========================================================================================= Online Petition to Save Florida State Library and Archives The Florida Historical Society has created a website to collect electronic signatures for a petition about the State Library of Florida closing. The petition will be sent to the governor and members of the State Legislature on 28 February 2003. Click here to view the petition and add your name. The petition can also be accessed through the Florida Historical Society home page. ================================================================================ Link: http://www.floridahistory.info/petition/ This is very very disturbing to me. I have read the Resolution from the Florida Historical Society, and it says that the Governor's new budget doesn't allow funding for the State Library. It also restricts the funding for historical preservation. This also eliminates jobs in a bad economy. What kind of message is this sending to the people of Florida, the other Governors and the American people. I have signed the petition and will be sending some letters if I can find some email addresses. This is truly a very sad situation. Please go and sign this, because it could be us fighting for our State Library and Archives next. Thanks, Drew Slate Fort Worth, Tx
