Ina, You should be able to get the death record from the Red River Courthouse or from the State Capital. You can get it from either by mail. You could probably just call to the courthouse and tell them what you want. It will cost you a little, but it will be certified and alot nicer than a copy. The death was over 25 years ago so you shouldn't have any problems. If under 25 years, then you have to show prove of relation. The deadline is 50 years for births. I am not sure about the police reports though. You might try to library for a copy of the newspaper for that week or day. Also, someone might find something about it in the Dales' cemetery book. They include obits and death records in their burial descriptions. My grandfather and some of his siblings were born and lived part of their lives in Vessey. I didn't know about that little community until last Dec. when I found his sister's birth record and then his SS application. Betty, first let me say, belatedly, welcome to the list. I do not really know any of the Bean's that I mentioned well enough to even say anything. My brother-in law and sister-in-law are Bean's and their Grandparents were from Clarksville,Tx. The man's name was Hardy Bean and that is the extent of my knowledge. The brother-in-law has done some searching for relatives and my sister did lots of the research, but I am not really involved in their searching. My sister passed away in 2001,so I really don't know anything more. The name just caught my eye,but I hope you find much info. These folks on this Red River list will help a lot. They are great folks! Luck to you. Bonnie, My name is Beene. But, Bean is a variable spelling. The spellings that I have found of the line that I am researching in Red River Co., TX is Bean but I found marriage record where the name was spelled Been. They are all the same, Bean/Beene/Been/Beane, etc. Which Bean are you related by marriage? Betty, Jack's (Dr Atkins) mother Virginia works in the office at the Clarksville Funeral Home. I saw Jack a few months ago when his father died. I am not surprised Jack is a doctor. He was one of the nice guys and was always making the A honor roll. I have several pictures of him in my year book of Jack that I could scan and send you if you are interested. My dad's uncle Ted Giddens married Mary E Atkins (aunt Mollie to me) that was daughter of Bennett & Sarah Brunson Atkins. Aunt Mollie died June 16 1975 and is buried at Concord next to her husband. She and my grandmother Giddens lived in a house on Donoho Street about 2 blocks south of the high school. I would often stop and visit with the two of them went I walked home from school. Mary E (Aunt Mollie) was born Jan 3, 1884. I went to Aunt Mollie funeral. It may be the last time any one was buried at Concord. My Giddens established Concord Community in 1833. There are only a few of us that try to keep the old cemetery clean and clear. It is like going back in history for me. The huge oak trees are beautiful. One of them is probably 300+ years old. It takes 13 paces for me to walk around it. As you may can tell I am off work today and have spent the day so far at this computer, but I must run some errands now (honey dews) then I will be working for 3 days in a row. It has been nice and maybe I have said about all I have to say (yeah sure). Jim Giddens Paris/Reno, Tx p.s. Betty, You may notice that I added "rambling" in my subject. I do this for those that may just want to hit the delete button when it is not direct genealogy. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Betty Beene" <pur_bsb@shsu.edu> To: <TXREDRIV-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, March 17, 2003 1:30 PM Subject: Re: [TXREDRIV] Bean-Need help & rambling. > Jim, > > I have a Jim Poteet born in 1905 which could be Donald Poteet's father or grandfather. > I am new to this list. Looking for information on William Bean family, William married to Ellinorah in 1870 census of Red River Co., TX, children Phoebe Elizabeth married William Lowrance, Mary Jane married to William P. Billingsley, Nancy W. married to John G. Payne. Does anyone have any information on this Bean family? Betty, Welcome to the list. Buckle your seat belt and get ready for a lot of e-mails. I checked my book "Looking Back To See" by Jerry Bray. Apparently "Bill" Lowrance worked at Black Bros. Wholesale in Clarksville. The only mention is in a story about a farmer/rancher that fell on hard times and could not pay his bill. Mr. Black thought so highly of this gentleman that he not only did not demand payment, but also told Bill Lowrance (presumably an employee) to give the gentleman and additional $1000! I found nothing in "Red River Recollections". Ginger Annona, TX
Jim, I have a Jim Poteet born in 1905 which could be Donald Poteet's father or grandfather. Phoebe May Billingsley married Joseph Richard Humphrey in Lamar Co., TX in 1897, they are both buried at Evergreen Cemetery, Lamar Co., TX. I haven't found any of their children yet. My goodness, yes, I know Dr. Adkins. My husband hung most of the wallpaper in his house and he used to be my doctor. I did not know that he was from that area of Northeast Texas. Yes, we enjoy having the statue here of Sam. I am a graduate of Sam Houston State University along with my husband and quite a few family members. Look for the Bearkats on TV Friday playing for the first time "ever" in the NCAA Basketball tournament from Tampa, FL. They are playing the Florida Gators, our odds are only 2,500 to 1 of winning but quite an experience for our university. Looking forward to hearing more news about descendants of my husband's family. I only found them in Red River and Lamar Co., TX a week ago. I have been researching this family for 6 years. Betty, There are many Humphrey people still in Red River County. I know the Lone Star Cemetery has many of them. I also had a classmate Donald Poteet living in the Dimple area north of Clarksville about 6 miles that has a son working at Allen Lumber Company in Clarksville. Here is one of the reasons I like to know where people live. You live in Huntsville as does a class mate of mine of the class of 59 of Clarksville High School. He is Dr Jack Atkins. He is a OB/Gyn doctor. He is married to the daughter of Dr Wright that was a old doctor in Clarksville in the 50s when I was a teen there. This Atkins still have a ranch at Vessey in northeast Red River Co. and one in west RR Co on Hwy US 82 just west of Detroit just before you come to where the railroad overpass was until recent years. You will see the Atkins Ranch sign. Jack's brother Eddie is a multi-business man here in the Paris area. I know I am rambling but often tidbits are a surprising help to someone, if not for you or me. I sure like that Sam Houston stature in Huntsville. I pass it when we go to Lake Conroe to visit one of or children. Have a good day and thanks for joining our little group. Thanks for your response. I'm afraid I don't have enough information to connect with any of the names you gave me except for Wade H. Lowrance but I have not tied him to parents yet. Phoebe Bean married William M. Lowrance in 1868 in Red River Co., TX, children Sam, John, Alice, Annie, Mary, Willie and Catherine that I know of so far. There was a L. R. Bean in Red River Co. in 1880 census born in TN about 1822 who is probably related to my Beans, could be a son of William. Other surnames in Red River Co. are Hamil, Poteet, Humphrey, Thrower and Pulattie. They were in the Clarksville and Manchester area. Mary Jane Bean Billingsley moved to Lamar Co. in 1880. Welcome to the board. Is your name Betty Beene? We are a friendly & helpful board with many people exchanging information. I help all I can as do others. It gets a little confusing at time trying to keep up with all the different messages and request when people do not give their name. At least that goes for me. It also help me to keep my interest if I know where the person lives. My personal request is for all to sign off with their name (first and last) and where they live. This is not a requirement of the board and certainly not a demand (but a request) by me. My reason for this may sound strange or unfriendly to new members, but as time goes on I think you will see and agree of its importance in adding to the interest and input to the board. Now, I have a few tidbits of information that may help in this question at this time, but maybe after some research I will have more. Your listed surnames are very common in Red River county. We have Carl Bean Motors that recently closed, Ester L Lawrence (maybe Lowrance) was the second wife of my GG Gf Wiley W Giddens and is buried at Concord Cemetery in Red River Co. Also the records show at Concord a Wade H Lowrance died Dec 1918 and was a Pvt in the 70 Balloon Btn. My Concord plot map drawn up by my dad show 3 other Lawrence (Lorwarnce ) gave, all in the are of Ester L Giddens. One of the Lawrence graves has dates of b 1-25-1858 died 1-4-1908. Payne: there are some Payne graves at Blanton Creek Cemetery north of Bagwell. I believe Dr Payne (at Clarksville when I was a teen in the 50s) is buried at Blanton Creek. This may not help, but maybe these tidbits can be of some help to you, you just never know. If you want to get an address for the soldiers records call the National Archives in Fort Worth, Texas and they will give you the St. Louis address where the records are kept. The # is 817-334 5525. They will be glad to help. I do volunteer work there. Barbara
NATIONAL PERSONNEL RECORDS CENTER MILITARY PERSONNEL RECORDS 9700 PAGE BLVD SAINT LOUIS MO 63132 All requests have t be in writing. No phone or e-mail requests and they have a back log of requests so usually takes a while but if you have the veterans full name and service number they can usually find needed records. there is a portion of the records available under the freedom of information act but to get the complete records the request has to be made by the veteran or next of kin. We are searching for all former members of the 588th Maintenance Company forr a reunion and have asked for and recieved some unit rosters and the releasable portions of a couple of military records. The people at NPRC have been most helpful though due to their work load and shortage of staff requests take some time William Smith Heavener ok BanC36@aol.com wrote: >If you want to get an address for the soldiers records call the National >Archives in Fort Worth, Texas and they will give you the St. Louis address >where the records are kept. >The # is 817-334 5525. Eddie (and all), I just finished re-reading your letter to the editor of the Clarksville Times about Avery. It is very interesting. I don't remember knowing of the fire in 1915 that destroyed most of Avery. However I did know that the drug store building I was in at Avery was built (brick) in 1917, so that timing fits. It was named Gathing's Pharmacy (or was it Drug Store) when I bought it. I changed the name to Avery Pharmacy. I still have a few of the prescriptions that were written in 1918. I remember one is written for the "wife of Brose Medford". I also to with me to Mesquite the old penny weighting scale that I know dated back to when the pharmacy was built in 1917 because the scale has the same tile on the platform as the tile in the floor of the pharmacy. I had the old scale in my pharmacy in Dallas next to the prescription dept. People loved to weigh on the penny scale. It was a great conversation piece. I finally sold it when I sold out my pharmacy in Dallas. I was not sure about selling it, but I decided maybe I had wagged it around long enough. I asked $1700 for it and got it. You probably stood on the blue & white octagon shape tile many times. I still have a metal dolly that was in the old pharmacy. It has the Wrigley name on it. It looks like it was built for carrying large tow sacks of sugar. It has a hook (on the upper side) and a third wheel (on the bottom side) on a adjustable cross bar (it slides up and down the handles). You can lay it down and roll it on the 3 wheels. I also still have two old beer bottles that Greeley Gilliam gave me at Avery. The were made between 1840-1860 in a wooden mold. You can see the wood grain in the glass. The seems only go about half way up the applied long neck of the bottles. Looking forward to reading your part 2 in next week's Clarksville Times. Jim Giddens Paris, Tx
