Thanks Vivi. I have a few things in mind and those are two of them. I will start a little investigating to determine what has already been done. Eddie sent me a map showing the proposed lake. I need to hear from some others though that know the situation close up so I know what is being done and what needs to be done. I will send you a copy of whatever I get though. I had a good run to Clarksville today. I went to the Times, Becky Hale (Main Street project), the DeMorse house, the vanished cemetery at Robbinsville, and Dean Cemetery. I a good time talking with John Somerville. More details later when time allows. Also in the old Coca Cola building, you can look through the glass and see the large replicas built by Aden Petty of the courthouse and the DeMorse house. Today fresh Clarksville Times is full of Mrs Anita Perry (gov's wife) to Clarksville/ God Bless America God Bless our troops Jim Giddens Paris, Tx
Jim, I have a document that stated where he was from and it said Avery. It was on the document where he joined the CSA. Now, the document could have been completed later, when the town actually became Avery. That is a very interesting point. I will have to do research on that, when I get time. Thanks for replying. Betty, I don't have any Beene's in my lines that I am aware of, but I have a Jesse L. Greer b. ca. 1918 to Benjamin "Ben" Franklin and Lottie Mae (Patton) Greer in Red River County. I cannot be sure on Jesse's middle name, but he was the grandson of Jesse Levi and Elizabeth (Rycraft) Greer. Hello Jim & others I just wanted to put my input on what I saw in Clarksville yesterday, as I was driving down main street I saw big yellow bows and ribbons tied on doors, tree's, etc. Also lining Main Street was United States Flags,on each side of the road. I live here so I dont notice those Golden Arch's (unless kids are begging ) but it was with pride that I noticed the yellow ribbons & flags. My personal opinion, I hope they remain where they are untill this war is over. As a reminder of the men & women who are fighting for our country. I hope you dont take me wrong, as Im not complaining at all about what you said, I just wanted to say what I noticed & I belive alot of times, when one lives somewhere, it gets to where you dont notice things because it's a everyday occurance, but put something new up & I notice. Have a great day Darla Campbell Clarksville, Texas Also I wanted to point out to anyone in RR Co that may know what to do about this, there are countless streets inside the city limits that have no stop signs, I have thought about doing a project myself & getting a map to pin point each place that there are crossroads & no stop signs on either side. But as with the creeks not having names, I figured that there was no money for signs. Just a concern of mine, especially for drivers that are not aware of this problem, (the ones whom like me when I moved here last summer), that may drive, see no stop sign in front of them & drive on. And at same time another driver thinking the same thing, it's a accident waiting to happen all over town. Again just my opinion.
Drew, this one is not a Corps of engineers lake -- theirs are flood control projects, and the Marvin Nichols lake is a water resources project, under the control of the Sulphur River Basin Authority (SRBA)a body of (unpaid) local representatives appointed by the governor. I was a member of the board a few years ago, so have some acquaintance with the project. It is not expected to be built for a couple of decades, more or less. All water in Texas belongs to the State, not the landowners, and has been developed when required to meet the water needs of Texas' growing industry and growing population. The Marvin Nichols site, not yet defined in detail, will indeed flood some gravesites and other "heritage"sites, including ones in Red River County. The Authority will have to pay for the graves' relocation, the amount varying according to the expense of the move. Just as in the case of highway construction, the land of private owners whose land will be covered or "mitigated" for the project will be bought from them by time-honored procedures, on the "eminent domain" principle. Your dictionary can define this phrase better than I can. As has always been the experience throughout Texas, the water impounded will be a tremendous economic and fiscal boon to the area. Professors at North Texas State University estimate that even at today's prices the economic benefit to the area, conservatively estimated, will be well up in the $Nine-figure range. Red River County's 80-year economic decline will be reversed. Naturally some affected landowners (particularly heirs of the folks listed in Lawrence and Sue Dale's Red River County cemetery book) are up in arms . For some reason, lake projects always arouse a lot more vocal opposition of this kind than do highway projects, which often involve much more private land. Fortunately, the law creating the SRBA gives control over the arrangements for financing the project (which will cost up in ten figures) to the Region. After water is reserved for the needs of the area, the DFW metroplex, which will buy or market most of the SRBA bonds, will be the principal user of the impounded water. If anyone is interested, I could post SRBA's address so that questions can be more authoritatively answered. ----- Original Message ----- From: "DREW SLATE" <drew-slate@charter.net> To: <TXREDRIV-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, March 26, 2003 8:35 AM Subject: Re: [TXREDRIV] just talk > Is this new lake the one that will be over on the > Bowie/Red River county line? I did find another Bean birth and marriage information. Ova Bean married Jessie Earl Greer and had a child Ellie Fay Greer born in RR co. in 1935. Does anyone know this family? Betty B. I don't have time now, but this will get into politics which may should be discussed privately. I know we have different views on this board and both need to be respected. But yes, that is the lake. It has been put on hold. I do not know what the future holds for it. I still wish they would go back to the drawing board for the lake on the north Red River Co north of the Dimple area. But these are two separate issues (lakes). Yes, It is good to see the Paris News reporting positive events/news in Clarksville. Go to www.theparisnews.com As I drove through Clarksville yesterday about 7:30 a.m. on my way to Texarkana, the only access to drive on the square was only Main Street. Road blocks prevented any turning up Locust or Walnut onto the square. As I was driving back through Clarksville about 7 p.m. (dark) I had to stop for the red light at the southeast corner of the square. I had forgotten at that point that Mrs Perry had been there that day, but I was thinking about the Clarksville square having such a great early Texas history. However I was a little set back (stressed) that the thing that was most "attention grabbing" in my vision was the Golden Arches of the new MacDonalds about 3 or 4 block up Main Street from me. The huge, bright yellow golden arches seem to be dominating my vision and seemed to appear as tall as a water tower. Maybe this is why the events of the day on the square did not enter into my mind. Yes, I was wondering if that was all some people may see is McDonalds and not the history of Red River County. I think and hope this new Main Street Project will do a great part in reviving the city and the county. I could go on and on about the economics of past and present and future of Red River County but I will rest for now. I will say that RR Co must have a better tax base, jobs, investments and people spending money in RR Co. This will not be a easy task to achieve. Recently I asked the Highway Dept in Clarksville about putting up signs naming the creeks, but he told me the county was too poor to spend money on such non essentials projects. Is this new lake the one that will be over on the Bowie/Red River county line? I have spoken with Lawrence about a new lake that is going to cause some serious cemetery problems. It appears in present plans that there will be a few cememteries that will be UNDER water. Anyone have any information on this? I will dig up the last email I got my Lawrence on it and maybe that will help. If I remember correctly it will in the SE area of the county. Bonnie S. and Mary G. and Jim G., Thanks for the Bean names and the Poteet obit from Lamar Co. (probably my Poteet line). I have been researching for the last week, as yet I have found no connection but there might be a connection, I just don't have enough information yet. I did find another Bean birth and marriage information. Ova Bean married Jessie Earl Greer and had a child Ellie Fay Greer born in RR co. in 1935. Does anyone know this family? Betty B. Jim, the documents that I have states that he was living in the Avery area. I don't know how far Avery extended back in those days of 1862. John C and great grandmother Sarah A Williams (from the English area) were married on Christmas Day 1866. The problem I find researching Phillips is that the name has origins in many different countries. Most of my other surnames I can trace to a specific country of origin. Besides the Poolville connection the only other Phillips connection without a blood relation is my wife. When I first met her I knew she was divorced, but didn't know she was using her maiden name. I was surprised to find out that her grandfather was a Jewish Phillips from Latvia. Her brother has documents that show the original name is similar to Phillips, but it is written in Cyrillic characters. He was the first to come to the US in the late 1800s. When his siblings came over they used the same translation. Gene At 07:37 PM 3/25/03, you wrote: >No Gene, I don't know of any books on Poolville. I will check around >though. Thanks, Sam, for the reminder. The "Main Street" project is really an upper. Becky Hale is the Honcho, and doing a super job. Any alums visiting Clarksville will be glad they stopped by her "shop" on the north side of the square. Unfortunately, Clarksville's economy won't turn around until they build Marvin Nichols lake, but that is some years in the future -- some folks oppose the lake anyway. But we can hope that the county's economy has already "bottomed out." ----- Original Message ----- From: "sam embrey" <sembrey@cox-internet.com> To: <TXREDRIV-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, March 26, 2003 3:03 AM Subject: [TXREDRIV] just talk > I feel sure that many of you know already, but in case you don't, pull up the Paris News on your computer, and you will find it full of Clarksville happenings. No Gene, I don't know of any books on Poolville. I will check around though. I am sure there are some in the Weatherford library. I will keep my eyes open. I need to look a little further into the Phillips though. I will let you know if I find a connection or anything of interest.
