Darla & All, If you are setting at the red light in Clarksville facing west at night, the huge, high, golden arches will be the major attention grabber in you view. This is not a complaint, but a statement of contrast in relation to the history represented on the square and immediate area. I think it is great that Clarksville warranted McDonald's coming to Clarksville. I am in Clarksville several times each month, and I was just a little startled myself at my perception of my view at the moment for the red light. To me it reminded me more of the importants of history. You are of course correct about the Flags & the yellow ribbons in Clarksville. I have recently said the there are people in Clarksville doing a great job in Clarksville to give a face lift to the historic city. I see may historic houses in Clarksville, when I was a boy growing up in Clarksville, I just saw some old houses. Many I just did not see at all due to lack of interest. The Bell house for example was just a big old house that my cousins lived in. I stayed in the house in bed one day after I had my tonsils take out at the age of 6 (1948) in the old hospital. We did enjoy sliding on the banisters, but they were not easy. All, To reply to the confusion of the board being messed up. Much has already been answered by others and explained very well so I will not repeat all of that. Sam, did you realize that for about 3 days the Rootsweb computer had a problem and did not send out any messages that was sent to it. I sent a e-mail to the board this a.m. (Tues Apr 1) at 7:52 a.m. then I went to work all day. Tonight I see several of my lost message over the last few days have been posted during the day. This is my first one since this a.m.'s 7:52 a.m. message. I have ready the many message listed today. This is my second week to be working long hours (for me) and am not sure if I will be reply much tonight. Sue and I will leave for Mesquite early in the a.m. Any yes, seems some of the message have been duplicated, scrambled or delayed by Rootsweb. It may still be slow. I will print my posting time at the bottom and see when it appears. Later maybe, Jim Giddens Paris, Tx Apr 1, 2003 10:12 p.m.
Thank you, I just didn't want to be having all this by myself. Sam, I am having some trouble with the list messages also. At one point today, I received all the messages I have received over the last two days again. I think the mail servers for the lists are still clearing out their built up messages. When a system has trouble like they had, it can cause losts of duplicate messages and heavy delays on new ones. Unfortunately, I have had to experience this first hand as a network/email administrator over the last 6 years. It is hard enough keeping up with email servers and their demands, but when one goes down or an ISP backs up watch out. That usually spells a 24+ hr shift, and those are not fun. Drew, Thanks for the great idea, I will ask the nest time I am in there. I have a digital cam & if memory serves me right, the front wall of the Times has large windows which would provide plenty of light. These books I mentioned are at The Clarksville Times office. I understand why you cant get a photostat copy made of actual newspapers, as many as very fragile now. But with the photo idea, no flash, it would cause no mare damage to original than just looking at it. Thanks again, Darla Campbell Clarksville, Tx
Darla, Ask a question if you think about it next time you are in the library. Can a photo without a flash be taken of the paper? I use a digital camera and I was able to use this techique in the Red River Co. Courthouse on marriage cert. and vital records (if I showed my relation). It doesn't hurt the document and allows for not only a printable image but also an electronice image. By the way, this is a great way to get a surname listing in index books also. It could run into copyright issues though if content is photographed. Lawrence Dale and I were discussing one time if this method could be used for microfilm also instead of the poor printouts. Haven't tried it yet on though. Clarksville Times (Red River County) has newspapers dated back to 1948, they are actual newspapers cataloged in big books. You can not get copy's made of anything in these books, ONLY allowed to look at & copy with pen & paper what it contains. No photo copys allowed. Thats the only newspapers that I know for R.R. Co. Great stuff Tom! Sometimes I just ask dad what it was like during the depression or WWII to see what he can remember. For a young guy like me (31), it is a real treat to hear others talk about the "good ole days" (my grandfather always said the good ole days weren't really that great, hehe). I enjoy hearing about days gone by when life was a little simplier, but just as complicated, if you know what I mean. The main reason for my reply is something that you mentioned in your notes, The Star Banners. I always wondered why this tradition ended after WWII and wasn't used during the Korean or Vietnam conflicts, I guess because they were so unpopular. Last week though on the local news here in DFW, there was a segment talking about this tradition being revived. In fact, they are selling them faster than they can make them in some cases. There was even a custom ordered 4 star banner being shown for a family here in Ft Worth. The parents were interviewed and they showed their 3 daughters and 1 son, which are ALL in and around Iraq right now. I think it is great that this has come back and I hope it really catches on again. This not also shows us the sacrifices that certain families make, it makes us remember what others are going through when we think everything is ok. Our country has a long way to go to get back to the times of pride and diginity of the WWII era and maybe this is just a small step there. May the Lord protect our troops and comfort those left behind, which often get overlooked... BTW, I had two uncles in WWII and both came home, one was a Jap. POW for 3 years. He was part of the Lost Battalion. He was born in Bagwell. My dad's brother was in WWII and came home to Blanton Creek in a box after the war had ended. I was very young but I well remember the military funeral and the 21 gun salute that was fired over his grave. My dad was just a little too old to go in the military himself. Someone asked the prices of cars back when_____. In 1926 the price of cars were as low as $360.00, Dodge Brothers advertised "Supremacy in fine steel" Their Sedan was $895.00 and their Special Sedan was $995.00 fob Detroit. Willys-Overland offered their 4-cylinder Standard Sedan at $595.00 fob, and their 6-cylinder Sedan at $895.00. They also state that it's Universally rated as a $1500 car. It's only been out 10 months there are 40,000 enthusiastic owners. Miller Rubber Co has come out with a 29X4.40 Ballon tire that makes your car run smoothly. They are trying to get Distributors for their new product. My father bought a show room new 1926 Essic, 2 door sedan with a large Agate gear shift knob for $721.00. They started to take the knob off the gear shift and Dad hit the ceiling. He told them he bought it with the knob on it. They finally offered Dad $15.00 for the knob. We still have the agate gear shift knob even tho the Essic's is long gone. In 1926 the average income was $2310/yr. New house average was $7,748.00. Loaf of Bread was $0.09, gallon of gas was $0.12, gallon of Milk was $0.56, Ounce of Gold was $20.67, Dow Jones Average was 152. Life expectancy was 54.1 years. I was born in 1926. It was a GOOD year. Keep the Faith Eddie Robinson Oak Ridge, Tn. "The Atomic City"
I was waiting for Tom to reply, but Tom has already e-mailed Bonnie and apologized for the error below and all is well. I will say that I know is hard for anyone that is not into genealogy and/or history, to understand the passion that others may have for it. I know this first hand from my Mom & Dad. My mother just could not understand the letter writing (not e-mail) between my Dad and Louise Preece of Dallas. Dad finally quit communication with Louise and I think just about stopped his genealogy research altogether. I still have several of the genealogy letters that Mrs Preece mailed to my Dad. The Preece were in Ky with my Giddens in 1810-1820 and there was a Giddens / Preece marriage. Louise was a descendent of that marriage. My wife is aware of my mothers thinking and I know that is one reason my wife is very tolerant of me spending much time on this computer. She know it is important to me and she realizes how important Mrs Preece letters are to my research. However, try not to abuse her understanding and I try not to spend all my free time on this computer. My wife Sue has the greatest respect for my Dad and she was like a daughter to him. This helps her to understand my passion for family & early Texas information. Later, Jim Giddens Paris, Tx p.s. Sue sees Dr Tom in the morning and we both see Dr Cheatum (rheumatologist in Dallas) at noon. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tom Watson DDS" <tom_watson_dds@hotmail.com> To: <TXREDRIV-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, March 29, 2003 11:55 AM Subject: [TXREDRIV] Just Ramblin > JimmyG, > Why don't we get Sue in this Wed. to take a look and do some x-rays, make > some models and photos to get her ready for her treatment. Jim: James Wright was my mother's brother, with 2 sons...Jim Bob and Billy Dale (Frog). It's his and my mother's grandparents I'm trying to get information about. I have corresponded with Tom Watson....our grandfathers were brothers. Helen and Johnny Cornett (another sister Merle Jean) are my first cousins....our Dad's were brothers. Our grandmother was Sarah Emma Green and I can't find any information about her. All I have are names for the great grandparents. Thanks for your help. Also my brother-in-law is a Kilmer that was raise on Peters Prairie southeast of Clarksville. My brother-in-laws father was called Blackie Kilmer. He is buried at Lane Chapel on the prairie. I forget his real name. This are just tidbits than may not connect. I may can get more information if you want me to. Also Tom Watson will be talking to you about his Cornett grandparents. Hey Bob, Good news. The website below has a picture of the person you are looking for. I went to the cemetery listing and there it was in the Moore Memorial Cemetery. Looks like a wife if buried right next to him. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~t42cemeteries/MooreA.htm Let me know if there are any others you need...
